Didn't he also previously work at WTTG-5 before going over to WTOP-TV/WDVM-TV/WUSA-TV like so many others such as Susan Truitt (nee' Olney, IIRC), Mike Buchanan, John Goldsmith, et al? Hey... maybe Metromediocre wasn't that bad after all! -Unsigned Corporate Suit (2/28/10) I love Kim Martucci! I'm following her wherever she ends up. (2/28/10) Nick of Miller's Island...thank you so much for the plug. I thought the name of that jock was" Mister Speaking " as on the late & lamented 980 which at one time had Mort Sahl, but unfortunately nobody noticed. I had the occasion of interviewing Glenn Miller protege, Bandleader Charlie Spivak the maestro who used to be billed as man who played the sweetest trumpet in the world. Also on hand was Irene Daye, Mrs Charlie Spivak who made a bunch of swingin recordings with Gene Krupa like "Drum Boogie" and"Drummin' Man." I heard Charlie had a child prodigy son. but I don't think he ever interviewed his old man on the air. ...but I did ..... oh yes, in my Bobby Benson BRB era on WNDR in New York. But that was a long time ago ...imagine playing big band and later having twice the audience of WICE on WPRO in Providence, where all the teens listened in the night-time, where they --some management chided me eapecally with some liner about cinderella's fella for "communicating with teeny boppers," but apparently loved the ratings! ...back then in the 1960's as memorialized even on on the Citadel WPRO Rhode Island Station of Record website . I can still see those unjacketed 45's scratching each other piled up on the desk near the board in the peachy keen pink control room to keep Salty awake on Mason Street. You should have heard what they said about the music on WFBL in Syracuse.... It's unprintable ... But you know when I first met Doc Downey of WPOP ,KELP and WWOR-TV we had a coke together.. we talked about Providence...he was impressed. about that pro gig and we reminisced about Morton Downey,Sr singing "Danny Boy." and even about Color Radio for Southern New England and Color Radio Northern New England said more effectively if you dragged it out and said it with an ever so very weird inflection. But,,,but,...as far as " Mister Speaking" is concerned seems like he worked forMr McLendon at one time.. so he could apparently move and not meander between his first name, middle initial and real/and/or/borrowed last name. Or was that another "Stardream" on RCA Victor by "Chubby Cheery Charlie Spivak as the big time network announcers used to say....with the lovely Irene Daye stepping into the Coke Band Of The Week Spotlite to ask the musical question,"I Heard That Song Before?" a cover of the Harry James hit! Thank you Bob & Ray you taught me well at that little 5,000 watt.station. Tom in DC (2/28/10) Considering he has a 'face for radio,' I doubt Sorce will wind up on TV... Yet, you might be right Dave, Sorce could attempt to pull a Dennis Miller, complete with right wing & religious convergence. The Mike & Mary Poppins Show? Sorce, his new wife & Bolter - a media three-way AHHHHH (2/28/10) Don Geronimo - "DCRTV hears that CBS Radio is planning a "big announcement" about its DC radio cluster for noonish on Monday" Suffice to say, this announcement WILL NOT include any mention of Mike Sorce - unless he is present to hold-up Dan Mason's pants. Put a fork in the career of this industry black-balled dj. AHHHHH (2/28/10) Dave's response: Don's not "black-balled." Come on! Here's what I think will happen to Don once his CBS Radio contract expires in October. He'll do a late morning TV show for DC's Fox5, a mix of entertainment news and righty politics. Those frequent meetings Don has in NYC probably include Fox honcho Roger Ailes. I think Don is being transformed by his new wife, his co-host on the TV show, into a full-fledged conservative. He'll be a cross between Morton Downey Jr and Regis Philbin. If successful, "The Geronimo Show" will be nationally syndicated by "BB Productions," a TV production company formed by Fox5 anchor Brian Bolter. Why else would Bolter be spending so much time in OC lately? Hmmm..... It was wonderful to see the post from Chris King yesterday. He is one of the good guys, a true pro. I had the honor and privilege to work for Chris at WAGE. He and the entire staff understood it was all about the community. In over 40 years in radio, some of my best memories are working at WAGE with Chris, Dene, Paul, Tim, and Jim. It was always about serving Leesburg and Loudoun; and we had FUN... Chuck Koblentz (Charlie Cole) (2/28/10) Contrary to reports that Bob Ryan roamed the halls of 4001 Neb Ave for "31 years" or for "30+ years", let the record show that he debuted at Channel-4 on March 10, 1980... the same day Willard took official possession of the NBC Today Show weather map. (2/28/10) ![]() Hi Dave, Thanks for the great site and freedom of speech!Unlike other sites, on DCRTV there no gate keeping devices to discourage you from posting. This site and all it offers is well worth a donation, which i have done. I had a question about another dc radio person--Joel A.Spivak. Didn't Mr.Spivak work at WPRO color channel 63 ca.1963 around the same time Bill Quinn worked nights there at PRO? Thanks! Nick in Miller's Island (2/28/10) Dave's response: Thanks for the donation! Can anybody answer Nick's question? Well no matter where Bob Ryan of NBC4 lands, it was somewhat nice to see an experienced broadcaster/meteorologist be allowed to leave a position that he held for 30+ years and be able to thank those around him. Whether you like him or not or agreed with his view on the Washington D.C. area's weather issue's from a career standpoint one could tell that he had mixed emotions during his goodbye. Seems like deep down inside he appears to have a great deal of respect for his coworkers/family and employer. Something that has totally eroded in this industry as a whole and is absolutely unheard of in this day and age with the likes of Big companies like Clear Channel and all the others. Good luck Bob. Former CC employee/Bethesda (2/28/10) “Kim ‘Lurch’ Martucci. I never watched am news (from the community room of St. Elizabeths), one morning saw her on 9 and she made me laugh- watched some more, made me laugh more- was a loyal fan after that…” And after she was off air you quickly changed to what, “Hee Haw” or “Green Acres”? Please: she’s a distracting clown who should be doing birthday parties in Rockville. (2/28/10) Premiere ad said afternoon show; my guess would be Randi Rhodes. Laura's in the morning, Randi's in the afternoon. (2/28/10) According to Donnie Simpson's latest Facebook post, they both must have gotten the boot. "I hung out with Mike Brooks and Bootsy Vegas last night. We kicked it at my crib for a couple of hours and then we took our rowdiness to the streets. Look out DC. We had dinner and laughed like you have never heard 3 unemployed people laugh before. LOL. The sun was almost up when we snuck back into the crib. It was damn near midnight. I'm out of control." 8 hours ago www.facebook.com (2/28/10) Laura Ingraham is sydicated by Talk Radio Network, not Premiere. The add is mostly likely for the Randi Rhodes Show originating at Clear Channel in Rockville. (2/28/10) Monkey Dave: I was made painfully aware that you do not have our Logo for my Pirate station, heard worldwide, WBNY - Radio Bunny. Attached is the logo and you will find that if you print it out, paste it to holes in your wall, of your monkey cage, it will stop the nasty cold air from flowing thru............ Also attached is the logo from my Presidential bid in 2008, which, had the Diebold Corporation not fixed the results, would have made me President of the United States. We'll be watching the monkeys (ape-humans) who run Diebold in 2012 to avoid this same mistake again. Since our worldwide transmitters are in the DC area, we are in fact a DC Metro station and as such deserving of a place in the DCRTV photo archives! Ape-humans, you're so funny! As he quoted, " Likewise, don’t expect major change at 94.7. It is also making money. And, isn’t that what being a business is all about?", Yes! Radio is a business. The goal is to make money with this business. In radio, that's done by having a cume audience as big as possible, which in turn allows the sales staff to sell airtime to targeted and prospective advertisers. Pretty simple formula, huh? As for the graying hippies having that pipe dream of the glorious days of WHFS, keep dreaming. Pack that pipe up, pull out some old 45's of the 13th Floor Elevators and other obscure rock records that you and about 12 other people remember, smoke up, and when you sober up, join the rest of us in the 21st century. That era of radio is over! PUT IT IN THE YEARBOOK! -Billy Sparks (2/28/10) Is this another incarnation of the Laura Ingraham ad? www.premiereradio.com... Or is there another DC-based show handled by Premiere? (2/28/10) Sinclair broadcasts of the News At Ten on Baltimore's FOX 45, and Gossip Girl on CW 54, were frozen for at least a half an hour Saturday night. Guess no one on duty knew how to fix this. But as a practical matter, it all became moot with internet streaming. One can get ESPN 980's broadcast of Redskins games worldwide through streaming. (2/28/10) A quick clarification: WFAN aired the Maryland - Virginia Tech game through ISP's national syndication deal with the Atlantic Coast Conference, not through ISP's separate arrangement with Virginia Tech. That said, ISP's national airings are not supposed to compete against the radio networks of the respective schools. While WFAN was free to air that broadcast in New York, WJFK shouldn't have been able to simulcast the same feed over its HD3 in Washington. The only game feed WJFK had any rights to air was from the Terrapins Sports Radio Network. Everett W. (2/28/10) Hilton Kaderli, former TV-9 weather guy, was shipped down to Triple-A ball at co-owned Post-Newsweek station WFSB-TV, Hartford, many years ago, where he was sort of the local cross between Bob Ryan and Andy Griffith. Hilton retired just a few years ago, for parts unknown. ThisTV is always ok (it's always in 480i SD). But any time both FOX 45 or The CW 54 go into HD 720p mode during prime time, ONE OF THEM IS ALWAYS SCREWED UP and it always seems to depend on how popular the show is. Since I have both cable TV and an outdoor antenna, this is something I can prove without a doubt but not a big deal for me since I can switch between SD and HD and QAM channels & cable or antenna, but it may be for many others who DON'T have multiple options. I'm pretty certain this violates FCC rules. The video/audio sync problems make ONE of the 2 stations, 45 or 54 virtually unwatchable over the air via an antenna daily. We're not talking intermittent here, this is DAILY and deliberate for whatever reason, most likely cost savings & technical. An FCC complaint should be filed against Sinclair in my opinion. Tonight's problem pretty much ratted them out, that much is clear. (2/28/10) While watching the 11:00 pm late local news on KNSD-NBC San Diego, there was a promo about a contest to spend New Years Eve at the Warner Theater with Tracy Morgan. It's almost March and DC is 3,000 miles away from San Diego. How the hell did THAT happen?!? (2/28/10) EPIC FAILURE at SINCLAIR BROADCASTING's 3 BALTIMORE TV STATIONS... WBFF FOX 45.1, ThisTV 45.2 and WNUV 54 The CW Baltimore, so reports Baltimore Media Blog. All 3 stations were off the air tonight both OTA & cable for roughly an hour or more depending on your method of reception and even the FOX 45 News at 10 was interrupted and then CANCELED. FOX 45 never went back to finish the weather report as you can clearly see on Baltimore Media Blog. They just cut to Wanda Sykes and pretended like the hour long outage didn't even happen. After the stations came back on air, WNUV 54 continued to skip/out of sync on 54.1 as I've complained about this on DCRTV for like 6 months and the analog FOX 45 signal on COMCAST remained black screen for even longer, no clue why. Btw, the Terps WON and WNUV CW 54 didn't skip/out of sync during that game which ended just before the problem, and that game was hastily rescheduled after water main breaks at Virginia Tech, so it's clear the SINCLAIR people were caught off guard having to carry 2 720p HD signals at the same time and obviously don't have the proper engineering equipment to do so. I have ranted about this for over 6 months and everyone thought I was like some village idiot. I'm now proven correct. Like I said, EPIC FAIL. THANK YOU TERPS & water mains for proving me correct finally about SINCLAIR's stations! :-) (2/28/10) Angie Corley and Mike Brooks both have been removed from WPGC' s web site Bootsy Vegas was never on it. (2/28/10) Question about WFAN and WIP simulcasting on WJFK’s HD channels and broadcasting of live games. Don’t local Baltimore and Washington pro sports team have territorial rights to their broadcast coverage? The Nats and Orioles and their radio station can’t be happy that the Mets are being carried on a local HD station. The same with Redskins and Ravens with Eagles on WIP. And like today, when WFAN carried the Virginia Tech broadcast of the Maryland – VT basketball game, doesn’t that conflict with ESPN 980’s rights to the DC area with the Virginia Tech broadcast? (2/28/10) THE BATTLE OF THE BAT-SHIT CRAZY BAG STORIES HAS BEGUN!..... This week's contestants..... The Washington Post VS. The Baltimore Sun LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!!! (sorry UFC) Which bat shit crazy newspaper editorial board can OUT "CAUSE CELEB" the other? The WINNER? NO ONE! LOL These are like poster child "Feel Good" stories about tax increases that in reality serve no public good. What's not included in either story is that the amount of trash INSIDE your grocery bag is in reality 10X the amount of the bags themselves if not greater, and most grocery bags are biodegradable and/or recyclable, unlike much of the trash that results from what's INSIDE the bags. Not to mention people are just evading the tax and buying their groceries elsewhere outside DC and probably soon outside Baltimore, hurting job growth, but let's not get that "truthiness" thing involved in this please (sorry Stephen Colbert). Oh, but they did both forget to mention sea turtles can get caught in the bags and die (just not here, oops more "truthiness", another apology to Mr. Colbert). We can't have that, WE ARE DOING GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT DAMNIT AND YOU WILL LIKE IT OR ELSE THERE WILL BE FLOGGINGS IF MORAL DOES NOT IMPROVE! THE BIGGEST LOSER? Yep, you guessed it, bag ladies, homeless people, and poor people. Another LIBERAL REGRESSIVE TAX designed to change human behavior that unfairly attacks the poor who don't have a car to shop in Maryland or VA! Go figure. Oh, I almost forgot, as always, PLEASE, NO WAGERING! (although I think The Sun won for not mentioning that the plan is failing in DC!) :-) (2/28/10) Dave, My dad (Mike) owned M&D audio with Don, and he was a great guy - my godfather in fact. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. -Kris Ostergard (2/28/10) Where's Hilton Kaderlee when we need him? (Hartford was last I spotted him.) (2/28/10) First George Michael out of WRC and now Bob Ryan. One has to wonder if Jim Vance is next to go. Perhaps when his contract is up? Channel 4 would be so smart to pick-up Kim Martucci. She is real person, down to earth and can really connect with the viewers. I never watched am news, one morning saw her on 9 and she made me laugh- watched some more, made me laugh more- was a loyal fan after that- soon as she left 9 that was it for me no more am news. I would be thrilled to have Martucci back on the news- way to go channel 4 if you are thinking of this-smart move- P. Quillin (2/28/10) WLOM 99.1 has been gone since 1983, the time WHFS moved to that frequency from 102.3. WNAV AM is still on Admiral, complete with towers. However, WLOM and it's beautiful music format may possibly return when Texas abolishes the death penalty. (2/28/10) After reviewing all the previous Unsigned Corporate Suit postings I finally put together enough clues to figure out who he is. 1) Has referenced a number of west coast stations as "standards" other stations should be measured against, 2) refers to people & events older than 20 years ago, 3) his posts started on DCRTV about three years ago...but the final clue was that he prefers Canadian Club...it's former WTWP/3WT PD Greg Tantum. (2/28/10) While I am sad to see Bob Ryan go, I was really hoping that his departure would mean Kim Martucci's return. I had just switched to Channel 4 after she was let go by 9. Channel 9 was a fool to let her go and I know MANY people who have stopped watching 9News altogether, myself included. Kim M. is one of the few broadcast meteorologists that actually has a METEOROLOGY degree. I am eagerly awaiting her return at another station!!!!!!!!!! The trend of bringing in meteorologists who will work for peanuts is getting old. Stations will continue to lose viewers since we are creatures of habit and we form a "relationship" with the person delivering the news or the weather or the sports. Yes, times change, but if something works, why mess with it??? I know that where Kim goes, many others will follow her to that station. Just keep that in mind. (2/28/10) Me and the missus are considering ditching the dish and just sticking with OTA. Anybody have a favorite HD converter? Thanks in advance! (2/28/10) /\ February 28 Messages /\ ![]() \/ February 27 Messages \/ I saw by reading some old Billboard's, on the Internet, that Ray Moffett worked at WCAO back in 1946 and therefore made the switch to Top Forty when WCAO switched to Top 40 in 1956. Would anyone know if Lee Parker or Alan Drake also made the switch or were they new to WCAO when the switch was made to Top 40. I thought I heard years ago that Alan Drake became a race track announcer after he left WCAO. Does anyone know what happened to Lee Parker and Ray Moffet? Bruce (2/27/10) I miss WLOM on 99.1 and did not realize they had gone away. Are there any demonstrations planned to bring it back ? I would gladly catch the bus to Annapolis if that's where the transmitting tower still lives (2/27/10) (clip) Why doesn't Birach either git serious with [WDMV] or sell it? (end clip) If I understand the situation, Daddy Birach up in Michigan owns the station and wont part with it or any of the other AMs in the company. He hoped to make a killing when AM went full-bore digital and the stations all would be sold in one big ka-flop. I think he's still trying to keep that dream alive. More importantly, it takes a bit of capital and a decent facility to git serious with any station, and the Maryland branch of the Birach Clown College burned too many bridges last decade to make that possible: unpaid bills, skipping out on leases, pissing off employees and freelance engineers --- and the recent lawsuits aren't helping their public image any. Bluegrass would be cool, though. (2/27/10) Just dropping a quick note ,,have been hearing everyone wonder back and forth "Who will be going to Channel 4 "????? So many pros and cons ,,,back and forth .. Well if Channel 4 really was using its head they would be trying to hook Kim Martucci !! WHY????? Because the girl has a following !! I know quite a few people who were so unhappy when 9 when to the format they have,,people stayed only because of Kim. Then when she left ,,so have quite a few people .I have heard many people knock her ,,,I think there could be some jealousy . She is interested in her weather and most of all in her people !! I think a lot of people need to stop ,look and think ,,,,,maybe Kim is the one who could help out that weather group on 4....I really do like channel 4 but have never been much on the weather people ! Well hope I have sent to someone who cares !!! Thanks for letting me vent !!! Ant Linda (2/27/10) Dave, What is it with some of the morons posting comments here that makes them think that demeaning an individual based on their physical attributes is acceptable on any level. The following quote from one of your readers (posted on 02/27/10) is an example of what I'm talking about: Quote: "Unlike Kim “Lurch” Martucci, at least you can see the weather map behind her." I mean, is that kind of gratuitous bullshit really necessary? Does referring to this lady's size and/or implying she's some kind of freak really make the pathetic assholes who write this kind of stuff feel better about themselves? I'm sure that catching and editing out this kinda garbage beforehand is difficult but getting back to the individual after a complaint such as this might help cut down on the problem. Because it is a problem that ought to be addressed. Otherwise - you've got a very interesting web site that I enjoy checking in on from time to time. Thanks, Lew (2/27/20) maybe they (4) could bring Bill Kamal back. is he still locked up? (2/27/10) Dave's response: Yes. Bill never worked at 4. He was at 9..... Obv DC-area viewers don't warm up to new anchors and weather folks that quickly...so I hope they don't go too new. My fav area weather anchor is Topper...I say they should try to lure him in so he gets the high level of viewership he deserves. But, they're probably too cheap. (2/27/10) (4 will) probably bring in some 25 year old fresh from Penn State metrological school. Lot cheaper than Bob would have wanted. (2/27/10) Re: WDMV: Why doesn't Birach either git serious with the station or sell it? I think the best format they (or someone else should they decide to sell) could offer considering the makeup of the primary service area would be classic country with perhaps a little bluegrass thrown in (2/27/10) Anyone else having a hard time getting the Bob Ryan farewell video to play??? (2/27/10) To Unrealistic Corporate Suckass: WHFS does NOT have to make a "comeback" because it did NOT fade away or go down in flames. It had and HAS a fan base no other radio station in the Baltimore/DC area has ever HAD. Untalented Corporate Snake Oil salesmen used every trick in the book to both discourage listeners and give the illusion that 99.1 WHFS had no following. Despite ruined mornings and anemic playlists HFS Freaks continued to tune in. How do you account for the demonstrations, which only a small percentage of fans were able to attend, and the 5 years of outrage and anger that El Zol continues to occupy the signal?? You can pep talk your roomful of clueless Yes Men all you want the reality outside those walls is that WHFS was, and IS, an institution you and all your tie wearing fluffers(ties make good handles don't they?) cannot HOPE to understand let alone reproduce or improve. Your propaganda does not work because the people who listen to HFS don't,and never did, buy into the illusions big business NEEDS to spread to survive. Its an independant way of thinking and living that is beyond your square craniums ability to imagine. WHFS fans span every age group and social class to encompass a common thread: Individuality. If they wanted to would it be technically possible to link-up 106.5 WWMX and 106.7 WJFK and make them one station like in the old days with Bonneville's 103.9 and 104.1? (2/27/10) “You can stop all of the speculating. NBC4 already has a replacement for Bob Ryan.” - Unlike Kim “Lurch” Martucci, at least you can see the weather map behind her: she would be an excellent replacement! Love her & her rocking and rolling! (2/27/10) Regarding "Unsigned Corporate suit's" Post. It was FLAVA 1580....not FLAVA 95.5, and it was a dismal failure. (2/27/10) Just watched Bob Ryan's "good-bye" on NBC4's website..He talks about choosing to leave to spend time with his wife and watch the weather broadcasts vs presenting them..Any word on why he really left?..The Vance/Doreen/Ryan team was great..Can't imagine him wanting to break up that team and possibly go to another station (as is being rumored and somewhat confirmed)..Oh well..I'll surely miss his presence. Too subtle for him, obviously. (2/27/10) Bob Ryan says goodbye on last night's newscast after the olympics www.nbcwashington.com (2/27/10) Has anyone heard what NBC 4 is going to do now they Bob Ryan is gone. I believe that he will be a bigger loss ratings wise the George Michal was in 2007. WJLA will take over the rating when Vance leaves. Are they going to have Veronica Johnson doing the weather or will the move Tom Kierein to evenings since he you would assume be the next in line to replace Bob. Will they promote a new Chief Meteorologist from within or hire out side? now a decision I would want to make. Or do the say to the weather department that they did to the sports department dont have a leader. (2/27/10) You can stop all of the speculating. NBC4 already has a replacement for Bob Ryan. (2/27/10) I have to agree with an other poster about Unsigned Corporate Suit being a former knows nothing about radio GM. He talks about graying hippies wanting HFS back. No try more like 20 somethings who lost their station by surprise on a signal that blanketed Maryland for a Spanish format to serve a very small portion of DC. It's a waste of signal, a loss of money that CBS could bring in with HFS back on 99.1 & HFS probably wouldn't cost much more to run than ElZol because it is extremely music based. That's what the listeners of HFS want. Not an alt rocker that has a morning show with a huge salaries yet extremely under-performing ratings Cough.. Flunkies Cough... CBS is only hurting themselves for leaving ElZol while we listen to the station that belongs on 99.1 HD1 (HFS2 online). I personally don't listen to any of CBS current stations in either Baltimore or DC because they suck so bad. 101.9 is a work office station, Mix1065 is a CHR wannabe that just can't find the guts to make the complete switch to CHR. 105.7 the Fan is a big joke, is 1300 even still on the air in Baltimore? Fresh is stale with office music without DJ's, PGC like M ix doesn't have a defined direction, is it CHR or Urban? It can't be both & still win in the ratings! 106.7 the Fan sounds like a complete mess with no sense of direction, the air personalities talking have no charisma together except the Junks but still they're the Flunk's. The big Talker doesn't offer anything that can't be heard on any of DC's other AM talkers. Simple we want our HFS. (2/27/10) Unsigned Corporate Suit- To get the ball rolling the audience must be attracted to something. That is usually entertainment or information, which can include art and creativity. The business part makes it an ongoing concern that works financially. It is show business, i.e. we make a business out of putting on a show. But, I bought my bong at The Electric Head. Along with the latest issue of Zap comix. (2/27/10) Cheesus, the Unsigned Corporate Suit must have been a GM at some point - it takes him effing forever to get to the point. I would have had fun disrupting his staff meetings. That said, he makes good points about CBS - except for the 'old school' prediction. CBS does not break new ground. Look at their track record. They replicate. WJFK went all sports because of the success of their station in Detroit. They have done the same in several other markets. The same was true for Fresh. Big splash in NYC then replication to DC. That leaves WPGC. THey will do one of two things. Nothing (or in their mind - tweaking) or convert it to a mainstream CHR with the one syllable cool word of the day to describe it. While one could make the argument that going classic hits would be a PPM darling that would cost a lot in terms of marketing dollars. And for those geezin - it would never be a return to 'good guy' radio. (2/27/10) Hey Dave, I’ve been a lurker for years. Love your site and visit it daily. I’ve spent the greater part of my career life, 28 years, in broadcasting, small and medium market, which culminated with the demise of WAGE. When New World Radio fired the staff (except for me) they asked me to do morning drive for a week while they got the permissions to get the rights to go all syndicated. My radio hero growing up in DC was Tom Gauger—I worked with Pete Larkin, WMAL FM at a dinner theatre in Silver Spring, and told him that if I ever got a radio gig, that I would love to do the kind of show that Tom Gauger did. He told me to forget it—corporate suits didn’t like that format. Well, for that final week of my career at WAGE, I tried to do what Tom did so well, be personal, sincere, humorous, and topical. It was wonderful. A small e-zine in Loudoun did an article about my life after WAGE. It’s here www.talkloudoun.com. Chris King (2/27/10) did mike brooks and bootsy vegas get released by wpgc from the morning show????????? (2/27/10) I love it when I read of graying hippies longing for a return of “WHFS”. How about “The Bayou” making a comeback, as well? Perhaps “The Cellar Door”? If you can make a business case for one, you can make one for the other. But, before you take another hit of that stash of “Kona Gold” you’re smoking in that bong you bought at “Penguin Feather” instead of taking a shot of the Dewar’s Bill Drake favored (or the Canadian Club, which I prefer), think of this… Hell, if Radio One could line up the clients, don’t you think they would resurrect “WHFS” on its “real frequency” of 102.3, talking CBS out of the callsign? But, they won’t. And, neither will anyone else. Likewise, Dan Mason isn’t likely to do much with the CBS D.C. properties. All are making money. The talk of dumping “El Zol” is just that. Talk. It’s an inexpensive format and bills enough to make a profit. Sure, it could do better on 106.7 (and with another format on 99.1), but the short-term and long-term political implications of any change isn’t lost on the suits at “Black Rock”. So, it’ll stay where it is. Likewise, don’t expect major change at 94.7. It is also making money. And, isn’t that what being a business is all about? Now, that leaves WPGC. While it is also profitable, CBS has two “heritage” opportunities to consider there. As well as a “future” opportunity. They could build on its recent past (remember “Flava 95.5”?) or look ahead by going with “AMP” (or a derivative thereof) or to its distant “Good Guys” past as a “Personality Oldies” outlet like WCBS-FM, WOGL, KRTH, etc. My money would be on the former, rather than the latter for a very good reason: Demographic history. Basically, how many adults do you know who are “lifetime” residents of the D.C. area, and “grew up” with jocks like “Columbus” and Jim Collins, let along “The Morning Mayor” or the various guises of “Tiger Bob’s” that the Richmond brothers had on 1580? (Another handicap against a “Good Guys” return -the “heritage identity” is that of a daytimer AM...) (My favorite “Tiger Bob” was Rolle Farrar… And, I encountered another one a number of years ago in Paso Robles, California, of all places! ) The trouble with “heritage oldies” is that it is a very locally focused format, which works best where you have several generations staying put. That works best in places with blue collar-dominant local heavy industrial bases. (Think of Billy Joel’s “Allentown”…) And, D.C. isn’t one of those! Hell, isn’t the only reason anyone comes to D.C. in the first place is for money and/or power? And, they get the hell out when they either get it or lose it. As for the “natives”, they are often so sick of the place that they want to get the fuck out the first chance they get. And, when that chance comes, they usually do! So, I’d look for “Old Skool Memories” on 95.5. Think “Cooley High” instead of “American Graffiti”. Just remember, the only difference between XM/Sirius and “AM/FM” in the radio world is who pays the bills. And, it’s usually those who pays the bills that gets what it wants on the air. This isn’t art. This is business. -Unsigned Corporate Suit (2/27/10) RE: [ " When someone claims to speak for “practically everyone in Baltimore” then it’s usually a sign they represent a smaller group of folks " ]..... I've seen the ratings for WTMD 89.7, PLEASE! And The Living Classrooms Foundation, the group that SANK the harbor taxi boat & killed all those people & were on every news network nationwide and had to abandon that service? That's the widespread support for WTMD's Senator Theater proposal? NOW WHEN I SAY I SPEAK FOR ALL OF BALTIMORE, I MEANT TO SAY, EVERYONE WANTS TO SEE 1ST RUN MOVIES & PREMIERES AT THE SENATOR AGAIN! Sorry for being harsh, but the criticism of my statement was way beyond over the top. By the way, I was responding to the link & its description of WTMD's proposal & the notion of some email or letter writing campaign or broad support for an "arts center", several of which Baltimore already has. Since I'm not privy to details of the proposals, I can only comment on what I read in The Baltimore Sun or what's posted on various websites & blogs & it was my impression that WTMD's proposal does not include running 1st run movies hardly anymore & the response to my criticism seems to suggest few if any 1st run movies will ever appear at a WTMD-run Senator Theater versus a Charles Theater run Senator theater, since the Charles theater complex has more flexibility in making deals for movies that a radio station does not have. If I'm wrong about that, then I'm willing to retract some of what I said. But, I criticized Kiefaber without respect to the WTMD proposal because he really shouldn't have any say in the matter or be taking sides. The man has already failed at running the theater multiple times as well as failing at running the Rotunda as well! It's time to not take his advice on anything anymore, he's wasted tons of public & private money in his multiple failures & should not even be consulted in this by the BDC or mayor or anybody. It has been my opinion from reading multiple sources that the only way The Senator will survive as a 1st run movie theater is if it's aligned with another theater chain like The Charles Theater or some other, not a public radio station & nothing I've read except Steve Yasko's response here at DCRTV has ever led me to believe otherwise & even his response seems to suggest that I'm at least partially correct. And the Rotunda Cinema also has a conflict of interest in this since it competes with the Senator & would probably like nothing better than The Senator to no longer show 1st run movies. The Charles Theater is at least further away & a more successful theater financially than either the Rotunda or The Senator theaters, both of which have closed up multiple times over the years or been in financial trouble. So in my opinion, putting The Senator in the hands of The Rotunda & The Living Classrooms Foundation, both organizations with problematic pasts is probably not the preference of the BDC or the mayor. The Million Dollar question at this point is, given this current economy, is it possible the BDC or mayor hasn't made a decision yet because basically no one thinks EITHER PLAN will financially succeed? -- Food for Thought (2/27/10) As a co-worker of Don and a Beatlenut, I remember how he said he was in management when Caroll James (also at that time one of our co-workers) played their first hit IWHYH and that Capitol asked WWDC to arrange their first US concert at the Washington Colliseum. Bob Ryan Explains 1977 Weather Forecasting (2/27/10) So WUSA's been pushing their new 4:30 morning news quite a bit today. Boy, I guess they're trying to run poor Andrea Roane out of Broadcast Hours by having her get up even earlier and anchor a fast-paced newscast solo for 2 1/2 hours! Channel 9 is really moving away from having two anchors on their newscasts, aren't they? Cheapskates. The earlier news starts on March 8 and I bet by the end of March, WJLA and WRC will follow suit with the 4:30 start. When WUSA led the way in the '90s with 5:30 and 5:00 start times, the other stations were right behind them each time. -BG (2/27/10) /\ February 27 Messages /\ ![]() \/ February 26 Messages \/ Don Rice was a class act indeed. I knew him as a fellow member of the Silver Spring Fire Department, long after his retirement from radio. He loved to reminisce about the days at WWDC in their original Brookville Road location (the stone house, and not that modern rectangle in the back). He could diagram the exact location of the studios, etc. It was also great to hear his stories about flying with Captain Dan, and his sometimes daredevil antics. He also spoke of working with the late Murray the K (yes the one from NY) who was at WWDC in the late 60s, early 70s. At the time, Murray recorded his weekend shows on vinyl while he went back to NY to do a live program. The shows had to be aired "as is" and Don spoke of times when Murry would go off, not realizing the mic was open, and a curse word or two could be heard. These were the days when unions had rules and more clout. An agreement was supposedly reached where the engineers/board ops would not be held responsible for Murray's actions. I worked at WWDC/DC101in the early 80s when I got the OK to replay the last game of the Washington Senators from 1971, provided I could get a copy of the tape. I made calls to everyone I could think of, when someone, I don't remember who, suggested I call Don Rice over at VOA. I reached Don and sure enough, he realized the significance of the game the moment it happened and ran tape. He had it somewhere in his basement and in a few days it was in my hands. A few weeks later, after we had sold out the game (old game, new commercials), the Senators lived again. Don was amazed at how good it sounded during our broadcast, for he had recommended we process it a bit. I didn't think it needed a thing after I listened to it, and during the broadcast, Don called me saying it sounded as good as the day it happened. Today, that tape has made the rounds, and Frank Howard's memorable homerun off the Yankees Mike Kekich and Senators fans storming the field with the Senators only one out away from a final victory, is preserved forever. Thanks Don! ernie kyger (2/26/10) Last evening I sent an email to Erik the morning host at WTMD asking him the title of a Johnny Cash album he had talked about the day before. Currently, one out of three people identifying themselves as Bill Quinn is the real Bill Quinn. The Bill Quinn (MQA, Michael Q Anthony) of Baltimore/Washington radio/tv is the real one! There are 2 others in print who continue to use the name although they are not in fact Bill Quinn. For the record, they are: Leon Chisolm and Wm Singleton. Whatever prompted them to "borrow," " lift," " purloin ," or " pocket," the name is for them to divulge. However, now with rekindled interest in "Seasons Connections Volume 4 " presented by Bob Crewe with song writing credits going to Bill Quinn, Bob Crewe and Larry Santos available on the internet, it is a must ..to avoid any further confusion. So with that in mind the genuine article,---- The Real Bill Quinn ------is not " chisolm" or "singleton." who continue to don the alias. Bill Quinn (MQA---Michael Q Anthony) (2/26/10) When someone claims to speak for “practically everyone in Baltimore” then it’s usually a sign they represent a smaller group of folks—so I feel compelled to respond. Our proposal had met widespread support from our listeners and leaders in our city. It has been endorsed by the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, The Living Classrooms Foundation and many others. Here is a link to the video we have included in our presentations: you’ll see business owners, movie and music lovers, real estate professionals and others endorse our plan. You can also see the dozens of positive comments at our blog and by searching the letters to the editor at Baltimore Sun’s site. Our plan would preserve the Senators status as THE place to see a movie. We will continue to show first run movies and include retrospectives, film festivals, experimental films. I want to be totally clear—our proposal ensures movies will flourish at the Senator. In addition, we build two additions to the building in a historically sensitive plan. The Theater itself would NOT house the WTMD studios or offices. The writer also infers that students are the main audience for WTMD’s vision of the Senator. This has been an ongoing piece of misinformation—WTMD is a public radio station funded by adult listeners. College students are not our audience, especially when you consider they do not have the means to make membership contributions to support the station. Another piece of misinformation is the notion that Mr. Kiefaber is involved with our proposal in some official or unofficial manner. He is not. Ira Miller, the owner of the Rotunda Theaters here In Baltimore is our film consultant. He advises us that as a “movies only” venue will fail since blockbuster movies shown here could not be moved to screens south of North Ave because the Landmark Cinema blocks that move. Our mixed use proposal ensures that this beloved landmark stays active all day everyday with adults who value movies, music and community. MlashawnH (2/26/10) I don't think there's any dissension in Baltimore at all. I think anyone who's a fan of The Senator Theater or has seen a movie there even once ideally would love to see it survive still showing a mix of classic and 1st run movies. Therefor, the WTMD proposal to take over the building, while interesting, in my mind was always considered an option of last resort, especially since Baltimore already has several old theaters that have been turned into arts centers. How many more do we need? It will be a sad day when Baltimore has no grand showplace to premiere a movie by someone like John Waters or Barry Levinson where someone put their hand prints into the pavement. I even saw the U.S. premiere of the James Bond movie Casino Royale there (it was like 1 day before the L.A. premiere). In my humble opinion, every big city needs at least one grand old theater for 1st run and classic movies. Whether that's financially feasible is sadly the problem, but I hope the WTMD proposal to turn the theater into radio studios, DJ booths & an arts center is the option of absolute last resort. That's why the BDC (Baltimore Development Corporation) has has been holding out on approving the WTMD proposal, even though financially, it's probably more feasible. Nobody wants that outcome for The Senator and no goofy college kid letter writing/email campaign from Towson U students or whatever Tom Kiefaber (who ran the theater into the ground multiple times and is just looking for quick retirement money) is babbling about today is going to change anyone's mind. And I think I speak for practically everyone in Baltimore when I say this. (2/26/10) Rumor has it that there is another round of cuts coming (to NBC). In the meantime, there are certain union positions--amazing that they still exist--which have been targeted for extinction, but management hasn't told the people holding the positions. Apparently, they are trying to shoo them out of 4001 Nebraska Avenue "with cause." It's a real shame what has become of that place. (2/26/10) There is dissension in Baltimore about the WTMD proposal to occupy the Senator. A letter writing campaign to the Mayor has begun and it looks like people are taking sides. WTMD's proposal to operate the Senator as a Arts Center and move their studios and offices there seems to be the popular favorite but Investigative voice seems to say there is some sort of back room dealing going on. investigativevoice.com (2/26/10) I didn't watch all of the President's Health Care Summit at Blair House on Thursday, but there seemed to be a problem with the audio cutting out intermittently, during the times that I did tune-in. And, WJFK is getting its ass handed to it by WTEM as we head into the weakest of sports seasons. Here's what they will do. (2/25/10) Is it true that Aaron Gilchrist from WWBT will be taking over weekend anchor duties at WRC soon. What happens to Craig Melvin? (2/25/10) Dave's response: Yes. We did report that Gilchrist is heading to WRC to do weekend anchoring. No word on Melvin's fate at the station..... Bob Ryan's timeline for starting at WJLA shouldn't be a matter of a non-compete clause as these were outlawed in DC several years ago. It may be more of a matter that he is obligated to work for WRC until the expiration date of his current contract. (2/25/10) Looks like Channel 4's experiment at 3pm is gone, they showed a commercial that Ellen moves to 3pm. But I didn't see when, I only heard it in the background. (2/25/10) Re Ellen move to 3pm, was just able to find their listings for next week online, looks like they are moving Ellen to 3pm and the crap news show to 2pm. (2/25/10) Has anyone considered that maybe COMCAST intends to sell WRC 4 and therefor NBC is ditching all the highest paid people they think they can afford to get rid of to make the bottom line look better for a potential buyer? Baltimore's WMAR 2 let go its long running sports guy and meteorologist, but of course they are in last place so it sort of made sense. Is NBC letting go any long-time sports people & meteorologists at its other O & O stations that are in 1st place in news? I wonder because it's the fact that NBC 4 is in 1st place mostly in DC that makes Bob Ryan leaving kind of glaring to me. Maybe COMCAST doesn't intend to keep the station? Hmmm. (2/25/10) Can't confirm anything yet, BUT there are rumblings that Bennet Zier, Todd Castleberry, Jeff Wyatt, Mark O'Brien and Jim Weiskopf may come together again... stand by... The Red Zebras could rise up yet out of the ashes like a "Phoenix" - this time as owners! Floyd the Barber (I once gave them all a haircut) (2/25/10) Dave's response: Are they the company buying WMET? Hmmm..... Tune in to WDMV, 700 AM for another edition of “The sounds of silence”, followed by “The quiet storm”. Yes, another day of dead air without any legal IDs. When will the FCC realize that the operation is unmanned, without the required monitoring or local business office. Do they either not care, or are they too busy approving applications for out-of-town translators? (2/25/10) I love coast to coast! Im only sorry WMAL changed the hours I could hear it. The only problem that Ive had with it lately is the few times in the past few weeks that I have been up to listen, is that it hasnt been anything about ghosts or UFOs or anything. it's been more newsy. Any idea why they changed the format a little bit? to the guys who said he didnt like the show, hey dont listen. (2/25/10) NBC4 is putting a gun to their head and pulling the trigger. People watch them for the continuity of the same familiar folks...kind of like wearing an old shoe. George leaving was a big deal and now Ryan "checking out" will be the nail in their coffin. (2/25/10) Replacing that idiotic Coast to Coast program with Doug McIntyre was a shrewd and most welcome change for Citadel. I've been enjoying his program since the switchover by listening to the WABC internet stream. For the first few weeks the loony conspiracy theorists, UFO sighters, and psychotic book pushers have been calling the show not realizing that it is not the Coast to Coast program anymore. That says much more about the Coast to Coast listenership than anything I could say. I blame the Trilateral Commission for this one. -Chainsman (2/25/10) So the Bobster is retiring/leaving........wish him the best! I hope I get to see more of that Veronca Johnson. She is smokin-hot and seems to know what she's talking about.. Between Veronica, Doreen and the occasioanal Lindsy(?).............I'm going to have to buy that new 50 inch Samsung! Sorry Jim and Dan........but you guys will look good on it too! All the best to Mr Ryan! Always enjoyed his reports.............. (2/25/10) Dave what formats could CBS radio D.C. flip to that would make their cluster perform better. Even with the dairies the cluster relied to much on urban WPGC to carry the rev load. The cluster has to find some balance because even if they flip all five stations they must have more than one station carry the load. PGC was 10th but i thought that a top ten finish meant something with the PPM. (2/25/10) Dave's response: A 10th place finish for PGC is not that great considering that pre-PPM PGC was often among the top five stations, and often first. If I was running CBS right now, I'd put oldies (a la NYC's WCBS-FM) on 94.7 with Don Geronimo doing mornings, I'd take PGC to an Amp rhythmic contemporary hit format with Big Tigger in mornings, I'd put a music-based progressive rock WHFS back on 99.1, El Zol to 1580, and get some new talent for JFK afternoons. Maybe reunite Big O and Dukes or get O'Meara back..... WaPo's Peeps Contest: While WaPo discloses the prizes are from Just Born, has the paper ever stated that the contest is a marketing program by the manufacturers of Peeps, Ike and Mike's, Goldenberg's Chews, etc.? This year's prizes include the usual JB products plus a stay @ National Harbor where the only company-run Peeps retail store is located. From JustBorm.com: "Just Born, Inc., the makers of PEEPS® Brand Marshmallow Candies, anticipates continued interest in media-sponsored PEEPS® Diorama Contests this Easter. Last year, Just Born donated prizes to more than a dozen newspaper-hosted contests nationwide. The newspapers encouraged fans to show their creativity using PEEPS®. The PEEPS® Brand Team will again offer media outlets, at no cost, a “PEEPS® Brand Prize Package” for their 1st and 2nd place winners." (2/25/10) And speaking of morons, as WJFK’s ratings slowly sink in the west, wonder how the Junkies are liking that format flip that’s taking them down too. (2/25/10) Dave's response: The best PGC could do was 10th and that was with Donnie's big farewell in late January! Fresh WIAD, El Zol WLZL, and sportsy WJFK are all still way underperforming. CBS Radio DC is in a heap o' big trouble, as usual..... Who could blame Bob Ryan or George Michael for leaving WRC NBC 4? Has anyone ever gone to nbcwashington.com? Try and find the WEATHER or SPORTS anywhere at the top of the page or the RADAR. All the NBC owned local TV station websites look like Hollywood gossip sites run by Universal Studios or designed by Chloe from the Smallville TV show for the high school paper! They are so god-awful, it's laughable. Today's top story is "Locals are Laughing about chastity belts for dogs"! How can you take a TV station serious for local news when their website looks like the Gossip Girl webpage? When I first went there, I honestly thought I'd accidently clicked on like a KIDS version of WRC 4's website by mistake or something like The Baltimore Sun runs for teens! It's just unbelievably bad and WNBC 4 New York's website is almost identical and equally bad. I can't believe more people haven't made fun of the NBC websites yet here on DCRTV. I could probably get Redskins news or the weather quicker here on DCRTV! Even WMAR ABC2 & FOX45's websites are more informative and better designed! It's just unfathomable to me that a local TV station would design a website that does NOT have either the WEATHER or SPORTS in huge letters at the top of the page! LOL (2/25/10) This would keep me up at night if I owned an FM music station www.wusatoday.com (2/25/10) It should be obvious that Korn-wiser thought he could get away with his comments, echoing the feelings of colleagues, for the same reason he got suspended. Hannah has to be doing someone at the top, the rest of the staff are sick of the favoritism shown her and Tony's suspension proves that someone at the top has a personal interest in the little cougar. The brass at ESPN must have quite a file on complaints about her, so it was necessary to create a little back story on how she is the victim, and Tony is the fall guy. (2/25/10) I guess I’m older than dirt because I remember Bob Ryan’s last day on the Today show [!]. At the time, he was undisguisedly bitter on the air, referring to his and Willard Scott’s switcheroo as weathermen between the network gig and NBC O&O WRC as “NBC’s version of let’s make a deal.” The staff surprised Bob on the air when they replaced the jet stream graphic on the satellite picture with the words “Good Luck Bob” in the contour of where the jet stream was that morning. All and all though, it was a good fit for Willard to play the clown role on the Today show (which has obviously been carried on by Al Roker), and Bob to be the serious meteorologist that he is. But I sure will miss him on WRC. Guess this gives me an excuse to check out WJLA’s local news, which generally is my last go to. (Cue the Conan music [done to the theme from Star Wars]: “Morons! Incompetent morons!”) Good luck and God bless Bob! (2/25/10) Dave ..this week's Robb Spewak show will be broadcast in Quadraphonic sound on air and online..We believe it is the first time in 35 years this technology has been used in a broadcast. Thanks Steve, KCJJ. (2/25/10) The one thing I always recall about Bob Ryan is when he started here on 4, he called that valley to our west the "Shenandahoah". I'm sure he's got that name down by now. Good luck, Bob! (2/25/10) So now both WRC and WJLA can both suck. JLA announced several cuts today. (2/25/10) I think the comment (about Veronica Johnson) was in poor taste, mean spirited and should be removed. I think Veronica is quite attractive and is a strong forecaster. I would hope comments like that would be pre-screened before posting to your mailbag. thanks (2/25/10) If you're looking for good alt-rock, WRNR-103.1 is really the best thing around. Yeah, the signal isn't great towards DC other than PG County and spotty in DC), but listen online. About 30% deep cuts classic rock, 30% classic alt rock, 20% acoustic alt-rock stuff, and 20% new alt rock. There's nothing else like it in our area. If the signal was better, they would be owned by Clear Channel or CBS and playing non-stop payola rock like DC101 or tired burnt out classic rock like Big 100.3. Why is it that the major players just don't get it? (2/25/10) I met Bob Ryan a few years ago when he presented a lecture at the Library of Congress, which you can watch at their website. Anyways, we will miss watching him at NBC4 and wish him well. I wonder will 4's ratings drop after he leaves? As you know, several staff have left the station due to budget cuts, so whose next on the chopping block? (2/25/10) Despite the negative comments rendered about Bob Ryan, he has been one of the many reasons that I've stayed loyal to "News 4" for all of these years. I for one will miss him and wish him well in his future endeavors. Rusty Gibson WEBR RadioFairfax (2/25/10) Apparently TK must have been BORN with a goofy comb-over (God what an ugly baby he must have been - even his mother probably rejected him). I could only wish that the plug will be pulled on the spanish format that's been a doormat in the ratings since it's inception 5 years ago. There's not one rocker or alt rocker in the area that delivers music like HFS does. Not DC101, not 98Talk or Indie 97.9, not even Sirius/XM Alt Nation. The new Alt/indie rock stuff is good, but HFS keeps playing the classics of the past 10-15 years that Indie 97.9 & Sirius/XM Alt Nation forgets about all together, as well as the true alternative music that DC101 only claims to play but doesn't come close to delivering on. HFS belongs on a main FM HD1 signal PERIOD. (2/24/10) Sorry to see the ole peckerhead leaving channel 4! Gawd I hope this doesn't mean that no eyebrows veronica johnson takes over. Can't stand her matter of fact way of talking. Boy that Andy Pollin is such an old man hell and I'm older than the old fart. He gets upset cause there's games on after his nursing home bedtime of 9 pm. and he suffers so having to stay up and watch a game. I'd dig a Czaban and Scott Linn show instead. And hannah storm did look silly in that outfit. (2/24/10) RE:"We are back on the air in Beautiful Ocean City, Md. on 1590 KHZ again it's the HITMAN and COMPANY morning show weekdays 7-10 (they gave me an extra hour to sleep in, wow)." Cool, as long as the place can stay on the air. While we are plugging ourselves. I just took a shit. It had peanuts in it--and the smell traveled further than the WKHZ signal (2/24/10) The following was forwarded to DCRTV..... From: Edwards, Camille (NBC Universal, WRC)... To: @NBC Uni WRC News4... Cc: @NBC Uni WRC Department Heads... Sent: Wed Feb 24 16:01:18 2010... Subject: Bob Ryan... Bob Ryan has been an important fixture in our newsroom for 31 years. He has covered everything from tornadoes to hurricanes and of course the occasional blizzard. Millions of area residents have come to depend on his forecast. After much discussion with him, Bob has decided it is time for a change. So Friday will be his last day at NBC4. We can't thank him enough for his dedication and passion. He will certainly be missed. Bob asked me to share the following note with you: "Even for a snow loving meteorologist this has been some winter. And for this snow loving and every other kind of weather loving meteorologist this has been some ride. It’s also been more fun than one person should have over 30 years in the same job with some of the same friends and colleagues for 20-30 years. But this winter’s snows are now pausing and so will I. Yogi Berra said, 'When you come to a fork in the road take it.' I’m going to take that great philosopher’s advice. This fork leads to more time with my wonderful wife Olga, who has had to deal with more storm related power outages and unshoveled walks alone than any spouse should ever have to put up with. I have had the wonderful fortune to work for and with many of the most dedicated people I know, who care deeply about what we do and why we do it. I may not have the opportunity after Friday to sit next to Doreen, Vance, Wendy, Jim or have the fun of interacting with my long time colleagues Tom, Veronica and Chuck and so many of you. But I will always have great affection for everyone here and you will be in my thoughts as you have been part of my professional life. If anyone asks, tell them let’s meet upstairs at Guapo’s when the snow melts, after this winter we all need a beverage and I know I still owe Collins another Jameson"... (2/24/10) Heard the actual clip of Korny's Hannah Storm comments on the O'Meara show today. It's a lot, lot tamer than one would believe from all the media frenzy over the story. Kudos to MOM's comments on the issue. www.mikeomearashow.com... Robert, Arlington (2/24/10) Dave, any idea on what the news is? www.facebook.com (2/24/10) Dave's response: Big announcement coming in April, according to HFS2's Facebook page. We can only hope! Hello again 99.1? JJ Hitman's "movements" on the Eastern Shore would bother me less if he at least would use the outhouse when he performs those movements! Opie (the one with good teeth) (2/24/10) Hannah Storm is a woman in her late 40's who should know better than to dress like she does. Tony K. was right on the money. People look for any reason to be ''offended'' because it's ''newsworthy.'' ESPN should grow up and stop trying to be ''cool'' and hip. Hannah Storm looks like shit who dresses horribly. Paul (2/24/10) Uh oh....The Hitman broke the prime DCRTV Bicktation! No plugging your own show... (2/24/10) I don't know which I care about less, JJ Hitman McKay's ultra right-wing reactionary political views, or his movements in smalltime Eastern Shore radio. Give us a break, ok? (2/24/10) So Tony Kornheiser gets suspended for two weeks for what ESPN deemed 'hurtful' comments on a local station about Hannah Storm's outfit; However, not a peep from ESPN after Mike Greenberg's 'slip' of the tongue on a national radio show saying Martin Luther 'Coon' Day instead of Martin Luther King Day. Where's the logic in that? (2/24/10) You left someone off your list of DC-based talkers – RANDI RHODES. True, she isn’t heard here anymore, but she’s now based here in DC. (2/24/10) Why the suspension of Kornheiser? I suspect ESPN is treating the matter as sexual harassment of another employee. Many companies have policies regarding inappropriate remarks about co-workers, and the issue for ESPN may have been that the remarks happened not just on the air but also in the workplace. If Storm were working for another outlet, ESPN may have simply issued a public apology to Storm. Dave, what do you think of this theory? (2/24/10) Dave's response: Hmmm..... Dave: I'm compiling for Deadspin something we're calling "Great moments in Tony Kornheiser Being a Dick to People." I see he once called you a "fat naked mole rat." What's the story there? TK's dickishness is so scattershot, the whole saga is tough to follow. (2/24/10) Dave's response: Yeah, I do remember him calling me that. Back when DCRTV broke the news that he'd be doing a radio show for the now-defunct Washington Post Radio. Hey, mole rats are kinda cute..... (First of all, Tony Kornheiser has to say those things to draw attention to his failing radio show) Yes, douche. Failing so badly. In the numbers, just released today - 10a - 12p WTEM smokes WJFK 12+, Men 18-49, and Men 25-54. That is in Share, Daily Cume, Weekly Cume, and Time Exposed. No Sir, You Fail. (2/24/10) Dave - thanks for the mention last week !! Now time for the shameless plug - People keep UN-retiring me and I keep on saying YES, It's my Bret Favre complex. We are back on the air in Beautiful Ocean City, Md. on 1590 KHZ again it's the HITMAN and COMPANY morning show weekdays 7-10 (they gave me an extra hour to sleep in, wow) along with my partner and Glen-gineer...Glen L. Martin...a 3 minute drive from the house so it's all good.....thanks and I will be expecting a BIG bill. Love from the beach J.J. "Hitman" McKay (2/24/10) "Wonder what would have happened if Mr. Tony said something about Sage Steele." There's actually some history between those two - prior to his departure from WTEM to prepare for ESPN's Monday Night football several years ago, Sports Reporters used to have a daily segment where Pollin, Czaban and their guest du jour chatted with Kornheiser about various topics for five or six minutes. One day Steele (then an anchor for Comcast SportsNet) was the guest and the interview somehow devolved into a heated exchange between her and Mr. Tony on the topic of female sportscasters and sideline reporters (I can't recall the exact point of contention but it probably had something to do with the journalist vs. eye candy issue). From that point on, Kornheiser refused to appear on that program whenever Steele was there. There's no doubt that ESPN's fiercely protective of its image and not hesitant to discipline or even jettison anyone on its staff whose words or actions are perceived as reflecting poorly on it (just ask Harold Reynolds, Jason Whitlock or Sean Salisbury). Kornheiser's been commenting on the wardrobe choices of various female TV personalities for about as long as he's been hosting radio shows, but ESPN could care less what he has to say about the women on NBC, CBS, CNN or any other network not under the umbrella of its corporate parent Disney. The only reason he's suspended from PTI now is because he chose to throw caution to the wind and go after one of their own (Hannah Storm). In the past he's been known to ridicule and lampoon other hosts on his own station (in particular a certain legendary figure in local sports talk radio) and as far as I know never faced any consequences for it. What's puzzling is that Red Zebra seems to have no problem with him devoting the majority of his show to topics outside sports (including polarizing political issues like the situation in Iran) - don't the suits realize he's literally delivering listeners to Mike Wise (on 106.7 The Fan) and other competing radio products on a silver platter? I can understand a weekly movie review segment (other sports talk shows do it as well), but even that's not nearly as good as it used to be due to Stephen Hunter being replaced by the far less entertaining Ann Hornaday. Today Kornheiser actually teased an upcoming interview with Post football writer Mark Maske as the 'sports portion of the program'. Meanwhile over at WJFK, Wise was treating his listeners to chats with noted NBC sportscaster Al Michaels (recalling the Miracle on Ice from 30 years ago) and Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau (analyzing the hockey competition at the Winter Olympics). I know that Wise took some heat earlier this year for a dismissive remark about hockey in a Post online chat, but he seems to have more than made up for it with lots of Caps related discussions and interviews since then. By contrast, Kornheiser continues to make ridiculous statements like 'the Wizards are a much bigger deal than the Caps' and act as if the mere mention of the word hockey on his show would cause him to instantly lose 90 percent of his audience. Mike, Fairfax (2/24/10) There is a poster on this site called "Paul". He loves to disparage the appearance of female TV personalities. I always call him on it, because I think it's a very boorish and ungentlemanly thing to do. I think Tony K has learned that lesson. At least I hope he has..... (2/24/10) Bob Ryan to Channel 7 - a symptom of penny-wise/pound-foolish shortsightedness by the Pinheads at NBC. Didn't they learn anything from the ratings during the recent Snowpocalypse? (2/24/10) WDMV back to their old tricks… all day so far with a dead carrier (translate NO legal ID’s). Oh well, do you hear a tree fall if you’re not in the forest? (2/24/10) Maybe with the Bob Ryan move to WJLA he can afford to buy a new rug… (2/24/10) Dave: Well, I guess people have moved away a bit from their fascination with Don Geronimo and over to Kornheiser. I was listening to Tony's show while in Memphis and what's the big deal? Tony's a victim of Twitter and new media, that's all! If people didn't rush to tell the ESPN exec's what Tony said about Storm, this entire thing may not have made any headlines. Onto another issue: It was really good to hear John Feinstein chew-up and discard Kevin Sheehan earlier in the week. Sheehan really thought he knew his facts about the Olympics and college basketball but John was right there to correct him..totally, high school radio at its best! Last week, a few of my radio industry friends told me that ESPN980 management is simply scared of Coach and other on-air people and won't speak to them about shaping-up. Gee, I guess none of Mr. Snyder's management style has rubbed-off on anyone. (2/24/10) The outfit was a little bizzare and Kornheiser is a douche. But Hanna Storm is still getting it done! I'd do her in a heartbeat. (2/24/10) Let me get this straight. It's okay for Mr. Tony to poke fun at Rick Pitino for wearing his all white suit. It's okay for Mike Greenberg to continually poke fun at Mike Golic's weight and wardrobe choice. It's okay for the "experts" on the ESPN NFL pre-game Sunday shows to ridicule each other. It's okay for Tony Riali, on "Around The Horn", to poke fun at Woody Paige for growing a beard. Apparently, that's all okay. But God forbid you poke fun at a female ESPN employee !!! Wonder what would have happened if Mr. Tony said something about Sage Steele. (2/24/10) Do you work alone? I mean, what if you take a vacation, get sick, get arrested or, heaven forefend, join that media market underground? How does the job get done? Sign me "Not hoping. Just curious." (2/24/10) Hey Charles in Winchester: First of all lighten up. Here are the facts....Kornheiser is well aware that his comments are out of bounds, and he has been warned just like all of the rest of the ESPN air talent. The fact that these comments were heard on a local radio station that is not owned by ESPN is imaterial. Right or wrong, we live in an age where you can't make these kind of public remarks about a co worker. Kornheiser knows that as well. A "live" microphone is a dangerous weapon. It can make on air people alot of money, but it can also get them fired real quick! As far as your debate regarding your idiot status...why don't you ask Kornheiser....he will call you an idiot as fast as you can say PTI. (2/24/10) Junkies were talking about Mr. Tony’s problems a while ago. EB said he missed it while listening that day. Way to put your foot in your mouth. I am sure Mike Wise liked that. (2/24/10) korney did nothing wrong his remark was humorous and right on target (2/24/10) First of all, Tony Kornheiser has to say those things to draw attention to his failing radio show. He’s had his 15 minutes in the limelight. Now, go away, Tony you schmuck. Second of all, how boring is Scott Garceau on 1057 ? He’s almost 70! OH THAT’S HIP! Not to mention how “self-absorbed” the Ed Norris Show is now. Jeeze. I want to kill myself. Maybe Ed can investigate. You know, the only half way decent show on 1067 is the Junkies and Bruce Cunningham with Zinno on 1057. Put Ed to bed, kill Chad and Lavar, and put Zinno and anybody in afternoons on the Fan in Baltimore! Good God, Pass the Tylenol. (2/24/10) Hey Dave, if you'd prefer this version of my response to the anonymous poster who wanted to send me a news flash, we could go with it instead of what I sent you from work last night: I am well-aware that Kornheiser made his comments about Hannah Storm on the air, but as I plainly said in my posting, he did not do it on"their" air, meaning ESPN. It was on his local radio show, as I found out by reading the entry right here on DCRTV. Everyone is so quick to jump to their own conclusions these days that it is just ridiculous, and the Internet (I guess I should stop calling it "Internets" to be funny since people will think it's a typo) just seems to exacerbate these things. For example, what gives somebody the right to tell the world that I appear to be an idiot, when they are the one who misread my posting? I can do a good enough job proving to the world I'm an idiot on my own, thank you. Wait, I'm not sure I said that right. Lighten up. But this episode is part of a bigger picture in which reasonable debate has gone out the window. Rather than argue the merits or facts, it's all personalities. "Because someone thinks this way about this issue, then they are just worthless and I'm not going to work with them to find some middle ground. On anything." I see this attitude all over the place. People wonder why we cannot come to any consensus in this country anymore, work together to get somewhere and make things better. First we need to listen to each other, read things carefully, understand what is being said, and THINK. Charles in Winchester (2/24/10) (regarding a previous post) "WABC and KABC dropped Coast to Coast AM for Doug McIntyre". Leave it to Citadel to replace George Noory's 'Coast to Coast AM' - the 20th most important talk program according to the 2010 Talker's Magazine List - with some clown who doesn't even show up on the list of 100 Top Talk Hosts. Given Citadel's bullshit programming choices, we should be hearing McIntyre on WMAL most any time now. (2/24/10) Ah..Harrisonburg/Staunton/Buffalo Gap's "Magic 105 WSKO"..the radio station that gave the world KIM LEACH !!! Kim of course many years later would be a part of Winchester's version of DCRTV that being the long defunct Btvonlinemedia.com. Funny how to this day few in the Harrisonburg/Staunton areas actually remember WSKO 105.5 but they still remember Kim Leach when she was on that station or as the locals would say "OH..thats the big woman with the big mouth of the central Shenandoah Valley". (2/24/10) Dave, I am not sure if you have already seen this, but WABC and KABC dropped Coast to Coast AM for Doug McIntyre, a show that Citadel syndicates. On dougmcintyreonline.com it says that more stations are joining next week. I wonder if Citadel will put him on all of their stations including WMAL? (2/24/10) The Hanna Storm Outfit... YARF! Hope the crew @ ESPN wasn't overwhelmed by the lingering smell of mothballs. Really, I thought Vicki's Secret stopped pitching that look in the early seventies. (2/24/10) Hannah Storm is another reason why women have no business in sportscasting. (2/24/10) This is EXACTLY what I was talking about with the Internet. Now I have been slandered by someone I don’t know, who does not know me. I said, correctly, that Tony did not make his comments on ESPN. He was speaking on his local radio show, not to mention that he already apologized. Why do you feel it is OK to call me an idiot when you don’t know anything about me? We might have a lot of the same likes or dislikes, could be friends, who knows. But in this whole environment of people who think they are smarter than everyone else, that the Internet gives them some kind of power, where they coin stupid terms like “Faux” News, reasonable debate has gone out the window. People wonder why we cannot come to any consensus in this country anymore, work together to get somewhere and make things better. That comment is Exhibit 1. Charles in Winchester (2/24/10) www.wrif.com... This is what DC101 should sound like, or what 105.9 should change to. (2/24/10) /\ February 24 Messages /\ ![]() \/ February 23 Messages \/ Hey Charles in Winchester; News Alert. TONY'S remarks were made on the air. TONY is an idiot. And so, it appears, are you. (2/23/10) Any other Dennis Miller fans out there that are sad that this is his sidekick Sal’s last week? (2/23/10) (regarding a previous post) "Radio legend Lee Rodgers fired from Citadel" This name is unfamiliar to me. Did he ever work in DC? (2/23/10) Let me state factually, as someone who was there & saw the damage done to both the work and family relationship, around 16 years ago Hannah Storm made a big play for Jim Lampley when they were working together on Olympic summer games coverage. His show was the best thing on ESPN Radio back in the day before someone made the decision to replace him with Colin Cowherd. Then people come on here and dance on his (temporary) grave. Very few of you are as talented as Tony, and many of you are nothing but jealous people who buy their own press. You do your job and let Tony do his. Charles in Winchester (2/23/10) Re: Harrisonburg's new "My 95.5"...ah this is the THIRD time this station has made an attempt at doing HOT AC. Between WBOP being "Mix 106.3" and "Magic 105 WSKO" ( what is now 95.5 at one time was at 105.5 ), I can't see how this new "My 95.5" could be a success after two failed attempts with the same format on more/less the same station plus not too mention during those "Mix 106.3" and "Magic 105" days, they had the HOT AC format all to themselves in Harrisonburg but still failed with it anyway. What makes this change even more crazy is that now there is another HOT AC in the area, Harrisonburg/Staunton's "Mix 93.1", and even they aren't setting the world on fire with their ratings, what a stupid pick for a "new" format !!!...But then again we are talking WBOP here, a station that started out as oldies in the early 90's but failed with that format only to pick up the same format again ten years later....and yes the oldies failed again. Wonder what format WBOP will be this time next year? Most people, whether they follow tennis or not, know who Roger Federer is because of his commercials. Anyway, disagreeing doesn't have to be unpleasant or personal...differences are what make the world go round...love you. -- Bobbie /// Well, that's quite magnanimous of you, but I still don't have any idea what Barbie Harrison's slight verbal misstep has to do with your deeply held, and secret suspicion ? The only guess I can glean from your non-answer, is the suggestion is that Barbara Harrison has never heard of Roger Federer ? Hencewith, she could only get the "RO" correct before she tumbled into mental oblivion, but recovered enough to nail his last name. Surely you don't believe Barbara Harrison has never heard of Roger Federer ? However, if that is the suggestion, then I would say you are calling someone who is involved in reporting the news on a daily basis, a complete moron. Perhaps, a well-meaning moron ? It's been well established here that BH has had a few marble-mouth moments, and that the vast majority of us could not do a better job. So, outside of infinitesimal chance that Barb's gaffe is simply par for the course and didn't have any deeper meaning to those of us not wearing aluminum hats, I ask (for the second time) what is this "suspicion" of yours ? There must be something more to this than the satisfaction one feels by catching and then reporting this horrific besmirching of a great tennis player. You dangled a treat in front of us, and then hoisted it away, as there is no way I am buying the premise that you are watching BH with a clipboard and a red marker just to report verbal miscues. So, dammit..tell us please, is she blowing the boss ? she's afraid of holey cheese, right ? Does she think an Alp used to be a hairy alien puppet with a TV show ? As for "AFTRA is the only union in the country that doesn't provide job assistance or relocation in the event someone is let go/fired", that's simply not true. Very few unions, including none which represent people such as the AFTRA membership, come even close to such a standard. Then there's the sophomoric "If AFTRA had any backbone it'd organize a mass tv/radio exodus where every member nationwide takes to the picket line..." which just happens to ignore several labor laws and the very nature of local contract bargaining. And of course there's "All they do is take your money and play patsy with corporate offices", which, even charitably, has to fall under the category of either pathetic ignorance or a deliberate lie. AFTRA has fought hard, courageous, lengthy battles for entire shops and for individuals. It has an unparalleled record in arbitrations. Oh, and as for the the other ignorant cheap shot, about our pension plan running out of money, wrong again. It's dropped some, as have all pension plans, after recent wall street losses, but remains better funded than the vast majority of pension plans. I will admit one weakness of AFTRA, however: It's had a few total losers as members over the years. And yet, even ungrateful curs like these still get first rate dedicated service. In an era of decreasing local focus radio stations do fewer and fewer real charitable functions. And, I agree that you can't report on every single public service campaign they run. But, when someone does what the Junks did for a listener that does come across as being pretty special. They should be applauded for that effort. It wasn't some dumb 'what would you do for tickets' gambit. It was an effort to make a real difference in someone's life. Radio long ago forgot that it is serving a public trust. It is all about the benjamins, now. But, occasionally, they do step out and do something good. Not as salacious as a divorce or pulling a stunt - but much more important. You should reconsider your stance on this. Sometimes, people actually do want to hear good news. (2/23/10) Dave's response: Hey, why don't you do it! The clock wasn't digital; the numbers rotated, and every time they turned, the radio made a quiet "hissing" noise for several seconds. I'd listen to the minutes tick by when I couldn't sleep. Sometimes it drove me crazy and kept me awake. Other times it helped me drift off. Here’s a big salute from those of us who have had the good fortune to work with her. Congrats, Laurie!! (2/23/10) I guess that this was inadvertently left off of the front page of DCRTV for some reason (although a Junks’ divorce makes it with no problem) – all four of the Junkies did a free fundraiser for a man suffering from ALS and his wife and three kids the other night. The wife called in on yesterday’s show to report how wonderful they were and how supportive they were. Surprised that this didn’t get more publicity – oh wait – we seem to only focus on the negative with things. This is not to say that all personalities don’t do something good here and there, I’m just saying be a little more fair in the reporting of everyone and stop focusing on the stupid crap that’s none of your business. (TB-VA) (2/23/10) Dave's response: I don't normally report radio/TV station charity campaigns and fundraisers because, if I did, that's pretty much all you'd be reading here on DCRTV. I get press releases every day regarding some local station's fundraising efforts. I'm glad they're doing 'em, but I don't consider most of 'em newsworthy. Look, I've always said that I like the Junks. But if one of them discusses his divorce on air, you gotta expect some reaction on the DCRTV Mailbag..... It will be a return to a place we called home from 1997 to 2000. This of course caps a couple of great weeks for us. We returned from Sundance where the film picked up a sixth award, this time by one of the most prestigious magazines chronicling film. Moving Pictures Magazine honored us in Park City. Following a worldwide competition the magazine determined thatBreaking News Breaking Down is one of the three top Short Documentaries of the year. With the events unfolding in Haiti the film resonates as it continues to shine a light on an issue that has gone largely ignored for years..the issue of trauma and journalists. I also learned this week that we have been invited to one of the largest and most dynamic film festivals in all of Europe. Our UK premier will be at the Edinburgh Film Festival. The festival director tracked me down the day after the awards ceremony in Park City just to secure us for their festival. In addition the Clearwater Film Festival extended an invitation and we were invited to submit for Cannes. No guarantee we'll get in...but it's nice to be invited. In addition before we left the folks from the Zurich Film Festival approached me to get a copy of the film. So needless to say our time in the snow was beneficial. We were excited to hear from the Gasparilla Film Festival director. We are delighted to return to the bay area where we hope to reconnect with our friends once again. If you are in the bay area between March 18th and the 21st we hope we'll get the chance to catch up and see you at that time. Yep, just when you thought the New Jersey church was done invading Maryland's FM airwaves, there's this from the YOUR FCC today. The application of course includes a WAIVER REQUEST to NOT OPERATE A STUDIO IN THE STATE OF MARYLAND for this Class B1 FM station! This application has broad & serious implications too. It will allow this church to operate dozens of frequencies all over central & the eastern shore of Maryland & Delaware from New Jersey without having a single employee or studio in Maryland or Delaware. FCC, please do the right thing, deny this application immediately. The FCC has already allowed these people to litter the Maryland & Delaware FM band with out of state programming which technically should be illegal by law & FCC policy. Just DENY THE WAIVER and put a fork in these carpet baggers. If they want to legally build a real FM station in Maryland, then let them spend the money to actually have studios in Maryland instead of violating FCC policies and laws. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! She doesn't like Swiss men ? Tennis isn't her favorite sport ? She has a secret Swiss bank account ? For years people in this venue have been harping on this poor woman for misspeaking, and maybe she does...I don't watch or listen with such focused intensity that I would let it both me, but obviously some do. One thing is certain, 99.9% of those out here couldn't do a better job. She seems like a decent woman, involved with the community and charitable organizations. She has held down her job for many years, so her employers must think she is doing a good job. So who really gives an eff that she said Robert instead of Roger ? Well, I guess at least one person does, and seeing that this one goof has confirmed some long held suspicion, I think you should share it with the mailbag, so we can judge you. We remained friends up until this tragic accident. My condolences to Steve's family. He was a really nice guy.PLB:0( (2/21/10) Because I thought I recognized the name Steve Hidey, I clicked the link. My mother did not carry me around under her arm like a loaf of French bread the way former Governor Palin carries her son Trig around looking for sympathy and votes." Wow... guess Sarah shouldn't be counting on HER vote in 2012. An attorney in Cumberland, Hidey was also an announcer on WCUM-AM radio for several years... CUMBERLAND — A Cumberland attorney died Saturday following a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 68. William Stevens Hidey, 62, of Cumberland was driving eastbound near the Maryland Avenue exit when the vehicle traveled across the roadway and struck the jersey barrier, according to a news release issued by the Cumberland Police Department. Hidey was transported by a Cumberland Fire Department ambulance to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, where he later died. Investigation into the accident, which was reported shortly after 11 a.m., is ongoing by city police and the Allegany County Bureau of Police. Only programming with an ABC7 meteorologist (Doug Hill, Brian van de Graaff, Steve Rudin or Adam Caskey) comes from ABC7. The rest comes from AccuWeather in State College, PA. That service is sent to stations across the country. Tybois Uphold (2/20/10) Congrats to WTOP "Sprawl and Crawl" reporter Adam Tuss. Listeners to the station learned during the recent snowstorms that Tuss was not only covering the wild road conditions and snow-clearing operations, he and his wife were awaiting the birth of their first child. AFTRA is the ONLY union in this country that doesnt provide job assitance or relocation in the event that someone is let go/fired. All they do is take your money and play patsy to the corporate offices. If AFTRA had any backbone it would organize a mass tv/radio exodus, where every member (Nationwide) would take to the picket line to combat the corporate corruption that is destroying the broadcast media industry. Howie is right, how would Jen Royle be any different if not WORSE than Anita Marks? Baltimore is very provincial as a town, even too much stuff from DC offends most Baltimoreans sports-wise let alone Yankees news? C'mon, Yanks coverage is just off the charts STUPID! As for Anita Marks, I sorta disagree. Yes, the carpet-bagger claim has been made against Anita Marks, but I really think she made an honest effort to learn the Orioles and Ravens. While I disagreed with some of her opinions, I think Scott Garceau and CBS staff rallied against her and re-enforced the "carpet bagger" image on purpose. SCOTT GARCEAU BASICALLY MADE A COMPLETE ASS OF HIMSELF ON THE DAY ANITA MARKS WAS LET GO AND RATTED HIMSELF OUT WITH THAT BRANDON MARSHALL SUGGESTION. I lived in Baltimore, where I grew up, again from 1988-1994 and heard Kathy on Mix 106.5 and then Oldies 100. She was one of the few people able to work within the strict format limitations of today’s FM music stations yet make the audience feel they were listening to a personality show; and that was because of the personality, friendliness and enthusiasm she projected in her delivery. She should be a program director’s dream. I don’t know whether Kathy has been back on the air since WLIF, but if she hasn’t, she should be. Apparently, Costello's snow hype term was "Snowmore" instead of "Baltimore." By the way, I agree with a previous comment about WMAR 2 news. Except for Jamie Costello and Megan Pringle in the morning, which are actually very good, WMAR's news is virtually unwatchable and actually makes stations like WBOC 16 look like a bigger market. I honestly cannot figure out what they're trying to do, other than save money. During the snowstorms, it seemed like they had more personnel on the morning news than on the 5, 6, & 11 newscasts and generally have single anchors for their 5, 6, & 11 newscasts. Regardless of what you think of Kelly Swoop or Roosevelt Leftwich, both of them are being put in a difficult and almost impossible not to fail situation. A single anchor has to anchor the entire hour-long newscast AND DO SPORTS TOO!?!?!?! It's just ridiculous. I think WMDT ABC 47 has more people doing their 6 & 11 news and they're 2nd rated in Salisbury! And then there's that god-awful PressBoxOnline.com produced weekend sports extra show with Stan "The Fan" Charles. OMG, he's cranky, he shuffles through papers constantly losing his place, seems disoriented at times. It's like watching the sports report delivered from the assisted living facility from Grandpa Simpson! LOL And Stan Charles is not even a WMAR employee I don't think. Then we would go to the concert, and give out front row tickets to the next concert to people wearing the DC-101 shirts. It was great to go to a 107 concert and see wall-to-wall 101 T-shirts. When I worked at WITH in the 60s, I gave out the secret location of a car that WFBR was giving away (on the first day of a contest that was designed to last through the rating period. I will still swear that my source was psychic. Would I have done what Davy did, maybe not. But it was great radio, unless you worked for 103. Ed Graham (2/18/10) Someone PLEASE tell the PD at 1067 to expand their music selection coming from and to commercial breaks. It's embarrassing to hear all the outdated music that some executive thinks we all want to hear. MIX IT UP! Lets hear some Jay Z next to Metallica next to Chili Peppers. This is YOUR AUDIENCE. Get creative. All the classic rock makes your station look stale and old. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of it, but come on. I know you can do better. Let the show hosts pick their own music. The music selection is much better on espn radio and fsr national. (2/18/10) "..back in the day we all respected our co-workers, " I'm not sure Kathy Whiteside would agree with you there, sir. (2/18/10) Fair enough. Perhaps Kornheiser was not lying about the Caps but was just being reckless and irresponsible with the facts. Not sure that's much better. (2/18/10) JJ….as you said let the HATE begin….The DJ corporate employees live with an “X” on their back…They make little or no money and they seem to hate just about any Jock that’s been around for over 15 years and are plagued by insecurities. You were right back in the day we all respected our co-workers, worked with each other and the only mission was to garner ratings rarely did any HATE or jealousy pop up in a major or secondary market. As for the great pros that are still around…. Loo Katz, (great guy) EdRod, (great guy)..Jerry Clark…Johnny Dark, Al Santos... There are so many great guys from days gone by I wish I could name all of them. The haters go after the ones that are VOCAL AND MADE THEIR MARK. …I wish I could list all of them. Of the current crop…Name one HOT JOCK AND NICE GUY!(Albie Dee) Hard to do. This site is loaded with anger, hatred, jealousy and people that aren’t proud of what they do. If they were, they’d sign their names(Let the HATE BEGIN!!!)PLB/Davy Jones (2/18/10) I just want to say that mailbag poster Al McGilvray should be considered for an on-air position at TV3 in Winchester, VA. -TOGS (2/18/10) Pic for you from CPAC - I thought you'd like a pic of your boy Plante helping out with his own banner... (2/18/10) ![]() Dave's response: My boy? Ha ha ha..... "Rob Kruz will be joining WIHT/99.5 " I heard Rob and he's a killer air talent. Congrats Rob. Welcome to DC brotha ! -Albie Dee (2/18/10) Is a new mini-series about JFK's presidency a right-wing smearjob? Critics, including Ted Sorensen, a former Kennedy adviser, say they have read the scripts for the project, containing errors of fact and emphasis. This is reminiscent of a similar controversy over a 2003 CBS film about Ronald Reagan. The mini-series, called “The Kennedys,” is the brainchild of Joel Surnow, a creator of the Fox action show “24” and an outspoken political conservative. Here's a link to a NY Times story about the film. www.nytimes.com... This link stopkennedysmears.com offers a video about the series and an online petition, calling the History Channel on this right-wing propaganda piece. (2/18/10) Dave's response: Errors of emphasis? Jeez, doesn't that sound just a tad Orwellian? Look, the Kennedys are public figures. If someone wants to do an unflattering mini-series about them, why not? It's still a free country, right? No one will be forced to watch it..... Thank you to the CBS Radio employee for your take on Anita Marks. Yes, it was pretty obvious even though you didn't identify yourself! LOL While I'd be the very last person to defend Sun writer David Zurawik (in fact I've ridiculed the man here repeatedly), he is on to something regarding Anita Marks. Everyone keeps criticizing Anita Marks for things like being unprepared, not getting along with staff, questioning her sports knowledge or opinions, etc. Yet, everyone has missed the fact that regardless of what you think of Anita Marks, SHE GENERATED RATINGS AND CALLERS AND ADVERTISING! Maybe it was bringing up controversial topics or promoting controversial opinions about The Orioles or Ravens, but in the end, her show did what it was supposed to do regardless of what you think of her. Another criticism of Marks is that she wanted freedom to do outside projects & CBS Radio didn't like that. Well Scott Garceau has outside projects too, so how is that different? It was obvious Scott Garceau was motivating CBS staff against Marks with his snide comments & behind the scenes back stabbing & it was obvious he hated working with her. Of course all of this is my opinion since I don't work at CBS Radio, but Garceau tipped his hand & proved me right on the day Anita Marks was let go. First off, he made no mention of her initially until being prodded by a caller, pretending like she was never there, then he tossed out the idea of the Ravens getting wide receiver Brandon Marshall, a controversial opinion that Anita Marks was lambasted for almost a month on 105.7 The Fan by Garceau & other CBS Radio people. The Brandon Marshall topic was the epitome of pouring salt in a wound or stomping on a grave, take your pick. How ironic & classless & it proved what a PRICK Scott Garceau can be. I've often said that I disagreed more often with Anita Marks & usually agreed with Garceau much more often, but that his dislike of Marks showed on air, especially on MASN, & showed an ugly side of Garceau's personality, arrogance & being a jerk. And I predict his ratings will go down without Anita Marks. Oh, one last thing... Anita Marks could probably kick Scott Garceau's ass at practically ANY SPORT (except maybe softball & even that's debatable) & it was obvious that he felt threatened by her on air for whatever reason, possibly that very reason. (2/18/10) This crossed the twitter line for Ohio Media Watch: Rob Kruz will be joining WIHT/99.5 as their new evening host, replacing "Grooves." Kruz comes from Adult Top 40 "Q104" WQAL/104.1 in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was on night duty for the past four years. Congrats to Kruz for the new gig! -Nate in Cleveland- (2/18/10) Ref: "oh yea let the HATE begin" Yea u must be right Mr. Major Market DJ, We didn't call ourselves Major Market DJ's when I worked in San Diego or Denver or other markets, we were fellow dj's - I guess things have changed and we need to make our Major Market selves feel better than others, oh well...Maybe only radio geeks will listen to Top-40, rock, Country on AM. And like they said back in the 80's FM is for music only, Oh yea Mr. Major Market DJ I don't think you mentioned your Major Market name, So sign in please - Stole that line from Bennett Surf...gotta run and go check on my mini-market stuff. SIGNED J.J. "Hitman" McKay (2/18/10) [The ratings must be good, otherwise they would have discontinued the show by now] Ed Jones, proving his knowledge of radio again. Ed - we'll let this one pass. The *revenue* must be good, otherwise the show would have been discontinued by now. The ratings don't mean shit... unless they are selling the show. They could have a 248.9 share, but if they ain't makin' cake... they show ain't stickin' around... (2/18/10) /\ February 18 Messages /\ ![]() Jump to the Mailbag Archive Index..... ![]() |
