This might be worthwhile for the Downstate VA page: looks like townie WMBG Williamsburg VA has picked up a second FM frequency. They were simulcasting on 740 AM and 97.7 FM, and today announced putting up a signal at 93.5. (8/31/18)

Hi Dave and Everyone! People who watch Decades on WJZ 13-2 probably know by now that the dot 2 will be carrying the new Start TV/Female oriented programming beginning Monday 9-3-18 which is Labor Day. WJZ is getting many calls on this and Decades is pointing viewers to their website for information on where Decades will be beginning Monday. I talked to someone in programming at WCBS TV in New York and they said they(WCBS) will be adding a 2-3 and she thinks that will be the case here in Baltimore as well as the other CBS markets. In some cases like Chicago for example Decades will be leaving WBBM TV and moving to WCIU/26-6. Bottom line is Decades isn’t going away it will either move to another affiliate or be on a new 13-3 over the air. Time will tell. For those lucky enough to get low powered Ch 31 in the DC area it will still be there. For the rest of us as you always say Dave, stay tuned! Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Baltimore’s WNUV CW 54 moves to its repack channel 25 tomorrow. Should be much easier to receive near DC and elsewhere too as it will be a maximized signal of 920kw from 1250 feet high. Sinclair had applied for 1000kw non-directional, but the FCC is not being too kindly to them of late. (8/31/18)

I get it that Bruce Johnson has been at Channel 9 (WUSA, WDVM, WTOP) since the earth cooled and is due a level of consideration well above that afforded the less-tenured reporter/anchor/employee........HOWEVER.......if I'm in the accounting department, I might be moved to ask why, if he's healthy enough to be out riding a bike, he's not healthy enough to be back at work. After tuning in to "alleged, wanna-be news radio 1090" this morning, I am convinced this station is on a hell-bent mission to influence a medical examiner's office decision on the exact cause of death of the city police detective suspected of taking his own life. Even the chick filling in for the mid-day motor mouth talk show host is trashing the independent review board findings supporting suicide. This, after non-stop, over-and-over airing of the former police commissioner's misguided theory that the death of this detective was NOT suicide, a stance obviously intended to preserve the lucrative death benefits for this officer's family. Given the fact that he, too, wore the uniform and stands accused of misleading and/or lying to the public while he did, why would anyone believe him now?? Keep in mind, the reason this board was convened in the first place was because of the inability of this department to investigate its way out of a wet paper bag, thus, an "independent review board." A caller to this station hit the nail on the head saying police never come up empty handed when it comes to finding a "cop-killer." In this case, they did. Even a jackpot of cash reward money, couldn't generate a tip leading them to a suspect. I am sick of hearing all the bullshit, much of it from agenda-driven people who probably have not read the board's report and have never investigated anything in their lives. Everyone needs to STFU and wait for the medical examiner's official findings to clear the way for this station to stir up another round of controversial broadcast bullshit. (8/31/18)

Probably the folks who are laughing the least right now are students of Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi , West Virginia. You see the school sold out the students when they offered up WQAB to WVPB in 2017. The university got a lame $30K when they sold WQAB's license and some RF gear. Dozens if not hundreds of university stations have been gobbled up by NPR-centric groups. College radio stations remain under threat here in the US by penny-pinching college administrations and greedy public broadcasting networks... TK in Odenton (8/30/18)

Back in the day, the Redskins and Colts did not have TV partners in each other’s markets, so if they ever played, you’d have never seen it on 2 TV stations in the same market. Since the Ravens, most Ravens pre-season games have been on DC TV and vice versa with the Redskins. But keep in mind, they don’t play each other every season. More interestingly though is that the Ravens have a radio broadcast partner in DC, but the Redskins do not last I checked in Baltimore. (8/30/18)

I cannot lie. I’m going through withdraw symptoms of criticizing, ridiculing and sometimes trolling David Zurawik & Dan Rodricks now that the Sun has the editorial stance of Pravda. This is why everyone is happy under socialism. No one ever complains. Everything is good. It has to be, because that’s what they said it is. The Baltimore Sun - Light For None. Since it's come up, here's how to tell the difference between the two main DX modes: Tropo occurs often in stable, dry, hot weather, like this week's, and typically affects FM and upward, including UHF television. Normally it is good for no more than 300 or so miles over flat ground, but it can be farther if the path is mostly or entirely water. It is characterized by long-term openings that last several hours, but the signals are normally only moderate in strength, not strong enough to affect locals unless they are low-powered or long-distance. On the other hand, E-skip is far more unpredictable and can happen at any time, although it also peaks in the summer. E-skip normally only affects low-VHF TV and sometimes FM - usually only part of the FM band, it is rare for signals above around 100 MHz to be affected. Unlike tropo, E-skipped signals can easily clobber locals, but last for only a few minutes and cover a MINIMUM of 500-600+ miles, and "double-hop" skip (a signal that is reflected twice) can easily get up to the thousands of miles. There is a distinct radius that is too far for tropo and too close for e-skip. I remember once sitting in a parking lot and having WRMF (Palm Beach, FL) wipe out WIYY, and the HD signal even locked. Besides the few DTV stations left on low-VHF, nowadays analog TV from Cuba is common due to the open band. In terms of monitoring, RabbitEars users have built a network of DTV tuners that automatically scan every few minutes and report what they receive. In particular, there is a fascinating location on the coast in Falmouth MA that regularly receives stations from as far as Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.... rabbitears.info... The "dashboard DX" long-distance FM stories posted here in the past day are most certainly e-skip. (8/30/18)

Dave: Ok, I guess I'm joining the crowd of suckers that thought Doc and others were fired from 980. I think I said this before, my radio friend from NYC told me that if a station is serious about making changes, the P-D is the first to go. I think 980 has rehired the same PD 3-times. Obviously, that wasn't the case about cleaning house and we continue to be subjected to Doc and Al along with their producers talking on air. Fred Smoot is a solid personality but not for radio because I don't really like having someone yell at me while driving but, I guess that all comes down to the right people running the station. Tonight's preseason game will be cool because we're able to listen to the Ravens call and Jerry Sanduski is a lot friendlier than listening to Larry and Cooley cutoff each other and maybe given Sonny 2-secs to react to a play. It makes the Fall season something to look forward to I guess. (8/30/18)

Can any Mailbaggers explain why the Redskins game, according to the Sports page, airs tonight on both WRC and WJLA? I thought one affiliate was enough. I know in past years the preseason games, if memory serves, have sometimes aired on Channel 20 and then on a VHF affiliate, and I know WJLA will air ESPN games for those of us with no cable. But I don't recall two VHF affiliates airing the same Redskins preseason game before. Maybe this has been going on for a long time and I just haven't noticed. (8/30/18)

I think what many of the readers here have experienced with long-distance reception is actually due to e-skip NOT tropospheric ducting. There have been several instances over the years where I have heard stations from all around the country on FM - from Florida to Texas to Wyoming. Los Angeles and K-Earth may be a stretch, but certainly hearing Texas from Woodstock, VA, is not. I remember once in 2012, I was listening to a CCM station from north Texas while traveling through Louisa County, Virginia. I called the jock on air to tell him where I was listening from. He asked, "Are you on top of a hill?" My response to him, "That'd have to one high hill, sir." (8/30/18)

He was brought to Baltimore PD from Anne Arundel County PD where he was a mere lieutenant assigned to public affairs. Once his boss, AAPD Chief Kevin Davis took the job as commissioner of Baltimore PD, he convinced Smith to turn in the uniform and take a leave of absence from AAPD to serve as his civilian spokesman in a quiet deal that sent two city police narcotics detectives to AA County in return. Davis got fired earlier this year, but they held onto Smith. He, Davis, and countless others in that department are part of the good 'ole boy network that has earned this police department a disgraceful reputation of corruption, fueled by deception and mistrust that continues to mislead the media, and, ultimately, the public. Davis is set to appear on alleged, wanna-be news radio 1090 tomorrow to join his pal, "C4" to regurgitate his rejection of the findings of an independent review board that has released a report indicating a police detective shot dead last fall actually took his own life, something allot of people already suspected and which flies in the face of Davis' and Smith's narrative for several months promoting the crime as an apparent murder as police searched for a "cop killer." The report, that repeatedly accuses Davis of misleading the public, reportedly makes no mention of Smith, but you can bet he also played a major (not chief) role in hiding the truth. This is the same guy who, on social media, publicly criticized former White House spokesman Sean Spicer, whom he referred to as "Spicy," for deception and lies. He has also been observed taking similar jabs at current spokesperson, Sarah Sanders. How's that for professional courtesy?? It is definitely time for some significant changes within the Baltimore Police Department; "chief" among them, TJ Smith. (8/29/18)

This tropo thing how does one really know if he/she is telling the truth or not ? Some years back I heard about a guy in Fredericksburg who SWORE he got K-Earth 101 from Los Angeles on his radio in Fredericksburg. He even filmed his radio but all was a scene of some tune by KC and the Sunshine Band on his radio and nothing that said K-Earth.( jock or promos ).. Same thing in Hagerstown. I remember some guy in here saying he picked up Denver's KOOL-FM 105 and The Party 95.7 on his car radio. Is this even possible even with tropo ?? RE: BPD Police spokesman & the Police officer shooting… Conspiracy theories will continue in this case in the media because the BPD didn’t do Police 101 in the case. They did no gun shot residue testing on the officer’s hands, so they have no way to prove he shot himself except for the fact that he fell on his own gun. So the whole case is nothing but a Mongolian Cluster Fuckup all around! Did the officers shoot him and make it look like a suicide or did he shoot himself and make it look like a homicide to guarantee his family nearly a million dollars in benefits? Looking back on the start of the "Alleged News Radio" thread, it's painfully obvious that the posts are coming from someone who did not get hired when WBAL did it's last round of FT/PT hiring. In examining the language, names targeted and details, it's also obvious you have a friend or two in that newsroom who is feeding you bullshit because they are unhappy with the appointment of Jeff Wade as News Director. Here's what I've learned. No one in that newsroom actually reads DCRTV. No one gives a shit about your posts. Those that have given them a glance have a really good laugh, at your expense. You obviously have no clue how a modern newsroom works, assignments are made or how having an affiliated television station gives them more eyes on the street and is a huge advantage. A news operation is a costly venture that requires not only monetary resources but long time relationships with newsmakers...which they have, along with the respect of everyone from the Governor's office to the PIOs of virtually every police, fire & public sector agency in the state. I work for another network and know many of the WBAL folks through their affiliation with ABC Radio. Your posts are troll-ish and petty to say the least & without a real understanding of what happens when a story is enterprised from the ground up by a local newsroom. Virtually any truthful defense of your constant posts are discredited by the tone & misinformed nature of your previous attempts to tear down a staff that easily has a combined 100+ years of experience. One of the biggest TV tropo openings of the season came up this morning. For me, with an antenna pointed southeast toward Washington, Richmond and Hampton Roads came booming in along with WBOC-TV. Richmond UHF is still very strong right now (~10 AM). WTVZ Norfolk clobbered one of the strongest local UHF signals, WHUT on RF 33, which is a rarity - normally the only local stations to go are WRZB-LD (co-channel with WVIR) and WMPT (co-channel with WCVE-TV). Also, the RabbitEars OTA listening post in Alexandria caught WNUV testing on RF 25 overnight. Unlike WHSV, they got approval to move early before advertising September 1 as the switchover date... cwbaltimore.com... (8/29/18)

Now that the Baltimore media is swallowing a bitter bill from an internal review board about the death of a police officer that apparently was a suicide, will that buffoon-like police spokesman "Chief" T.J. Smith get the boot. He was brought in by the prior police commissioner and was clearly a player in drafting this strategy to make it seem like a cop-killer was on the loose. Every day he was in front of the cameras spreading false information and the media gobbled it up like lemmings. Thank god Baltimore has Jayne Miller, who was the only reporter who pressed hard for the real story. (8/29/18)

As if on cue after last week's domain registrations, 104.7 W284CQ (WWDC-HD2) has applied to move to Arlington and operate with 99 watts from a site near Washington/Lee. Re: WSHC: It's really a stretch to say "WVPB has taken over most of the dayparts". They started out carrying Morning Edition from 6-9 and weekend programming last year, then added All Things Considered in the spring. I discovered it one day by accident, searching to see if tropo brought in WTMD one day and then getting ATC where I didn't know an NPR station existed! Now WVPB is on the air for ME and ATC during the week, and mornings/nights on Saturday and Sunday - 6 to 10 am and 8 to midnight. Immediately it jumps out at you that most of these timeslots (with the possible exception of ATC's 4-6 pm) are going to be difficult to impossible for a tiny college to fill with live student programming anyway, especially on weekends. And when one of the points of college radio is to expose students to radio production, automated music blocks are little better than dead air. To suggest there is a risk of a WVPB takeover of this station is laughable... (8/26/18)

The same problem with WLZL is the same issue signal wise with WDCH. It can be heard in Baltimore and DC however, Northern VA turns both signals into a dead zone. You can get it in Arlington, Alexandria but as far as say Herndon, Tyson’s Corner, Warrenton…no. You could put alternative rock or all news on either signal but with the western parts of the area, you need a translator or two to extend the listening area. Until that takes place…99.1 and 107.9 will have the same issues signal wise. If DC 101 were to go all news on their main signal…it would be a shock to the system as it’s longtime format has involved either been album oriented rock, mainstream rock or alternative rock. Pending on how well it’s ran…it could be a strong competitor in the ratings with WAMU and WTOP. If it’s on their HD-2 signal…not so much unless iHeart gets a few more translators for it to cover the area. Dan (8/26/18)

It boggles my mind that the FCC would let WBOC own TV stations for CBS, NBC, FOX, MyNetwork, & Telemundo all in a very small TV market, Salisbury, with only one other TV station ownership group with ABC & CW. And then what happens with ATSC 3.0 Next Generation TV? Will WBOC be able to put them all on the WBOC stick through a sharing agreement, thus all being in effect, full power TV stations? Something rotten here if you ask me. Sure WMDT has ABC, The CW, Azteca America, but geez, WBOC has 3 of the 4 major networks in such a small market. How can someone not file an objection to this? A new station that's half Baltimore/half DC serves neither market well -- meaning you're not going to get DC folks to tune away from WTOP and WAMU to sit through Baltimore news, or Baltimore types to switch away from WFYI and WBAL while they listen to DC traffic updates. Plus, I think your premise is wrong. As the only full-power FM Spanish station serving Baltimore and DC, WLZL makes a lot more money that it would as the second- or third-place news station in either market. Maybe you should go back to spreading the rumors of Entercom starting an alternative rock station. (8/26/18)

A few weeks ago I saw this article about more "mature" formatted stations in the Hampton Roads area. I knew about WJOI and The 1920's Radio Network but was surprised to see a nice revival of WGH AM 1310 by Max Media. The Virginian Pilot article is here: pilotonline.com... WGH's website is here: www.wgh1310.com and there is even a nice tribute website : www.alohanews/com. WGH and The 1920's stations do stream unlike WJOI. However the latter has been known to run AM HD. While driving through Shenandoah Valley earlier this week I remembered to dial up 89.7 WSHC in Shepherdstown, the campus station of Shepherd University. Unfortunately WVPB has taken over much of the dayparts to extend their NPR/WVPB audio to that extreme corner of the West Virginia Panhandle. Like so many college stations across the nation, the regional/state NPR groups have their eyes on these potential college signals. For example, in Georgia, GSU's WRAS and Valdosta State's WVVS both fell victim to GPB. There's a WVPB press release from 2 Sept 2017 describing the change: www.wvpublic.org. There's still student programming during non-core NPR hours. The station streams but uses a very proprietary, unfriendly service. Icecast would be much cheaper. Website is: www.shepherd.edu. In former days, the station could be heard in Reston and Sterling if you had a directional FM antenna. TK in Odenton (8/25/18)

Just saw that FOX5 is bringing in a meterologist, Michelle Rotella, as temporary coverage for Gwen Tolbert for the next couple of days. Quite interesting considering whenever the other meteorologists go on vacation, they will switch other meteorologists around to cover. (8/25/18)

WIAV is not moving to a full power TV station when they move to channel 30. They will have a higher power as a low power TV station but not be a full power TV station. They are still a Class A TV station and WMDO will still be too. The reason that WIAV has been allowed 48kw has to do with adjacent channel WETA who switched from 14 to 31 and at 1000kw which would be a problem with just 15kw adjacent to it as far as interference. WJZ management might want to reel in its newest morning news anchor, Nicole Baker. She posted a picture on Facebook last night that says a lot about her character. She is part of a historic long running popular program. Not to mention, she is a news person, a professional. It's not necessary to sell yourself like you're a pinup babe, or anchor bae, like one of her fans called her. That might've worked at her last job, but she'll regret it here. (8/25/18)

Washington, DC's top rated radio station WTOP is leaving DC for Chevy Chase, Maryland. Apparently, they've outgrown their DC location. This comes after WTTG FOX 5 announcing they were leaving DC for Bethesda in a couple years. WTOP’s new offices will be based at 5425 Wisconsin Ave., just south of where WTTG FOX 5 is moving and right near the District line. More than 200 employees will occupy more than 30,000 square feet on the building’s fifth floor, and the number of employees is expected to grow, GM Joel Oxley said. -- BaltoMedia.net (8/24/18)

Not to belabor the point I made earlier this week, but CK must be doing back flips at JFK. WTEM changes its line up to Galdi-Doc-B Mitch-Czabe and does not have Czabe the first week? The one established ratings getter left at the station? Doc/B Mitch could not cover it together. They will be better separately? Also, doing it during the third Skins pregame week after AP is signed? Re: the alleged new all-news station: Venta's above-the-paywall blurb references a "new entrant", but it's unclear if that means a new entrant to the market (i.e., Entercom) or just the fact that there is a new operation starting up. The beginning of the one comment that is visible (on the right-hand side of any R-I article page, "Recent Comments") references Capitals coverage, which adds a layer of intrigue. For what it's worth, I tried but couldn't find any interesting looking domain registrations myself for the entire month of August. Also, WWTD-LD and WRZB-LD have both been off the air since ~11AM Thursday (it's now 1:45), but WRC-TV and WFDC, a couple hundred feet higher on the same tower, are unaffected. It makes me wonder if WIAV, which holds a permit to move off that tower and to the shorter one right next to it, is finally going over to full power at RF 30.. (8/23/18)

Dave's response: Before Entercom bought 'em, CBS did try all-news WNEW on 99.1. The big problem, duh, was the signal, which better covers the Baltimore market and misses a good chunk of populous Northern Virginia. If Entercom tried again with the inside-the-Beltway 94.7 I think it would have a much better outcome. There's already room for a news radio operation at Entercom's DC studio complex in SW DC, where WNEW used to be.....

It seems quite clear that Bezos' Washington Post is out to get rid of President Trump and assumes that the end justifies the means. Their selection of topics for stories about Trump is overwhelmingly negative, with any positive news about him either ignored or given short shrift. Stories that quote sources almost always quote negative comment (more often than not unverifiable comments from anonymous sources) and rarely quote anyone supportive of Mr. Trump. And most longer stories are filled with language showing the values or bias of the "reporters" as opposed to the straightforward, value-free language one would hope for. Without commenting on whether this is good or bad, or whether or not Trump is good or bad, does anyone have any hard data on what's happening with subscriptions, paper or digital, and whether the Post's relentless attacks on Trump (and reliance on anonymous "sources") are affecting the bottom line? The FCC has ownership limits in small markets, but most of those rules apply to full power TV stations. I’m not sure if they’ll stop Draper from buying WRDE, but I agree, it’s certainly not good for competition in the market for one company owning the stations for 4 TV networks, CBS, NBC, FOX, & Telemundo. It puts WMDT 47 ABC at a severe disadvantage in the market. I hope the FCC denies this purchase. Will Draper owned WRDE cover the Ocean City parades? Jerry, at any moment, your receiver can be picking up signals from one of several Sirius/XM birds or local terrestrial repeaters. The stationary ones are low in the sky and might be blocked by trees or buildings in the corridor you refer to. I get the same problem due to tree fade on Rt 64 heading to Norfolk. This went unnoticed. I forgot to even post it a couple months ago when I noticed it, but very quietly without any promotions, Baltimore's only low power TV station, WMJF TV 39 made some news this summer. It became an ION affiliate and also added Grit TV. Previously, the ION feeds you got on cable TV were either the national feed or DC's affiliate. I assume they will be from WMJF now. An ambitious plan by WMDT 47/ABC? Owner Marquee Broadcasting has applied for a new upper Delaware digital signal, WEVD channel 3, to replace analog channel 27 in Dover as WEVD 27 has to vacate channel 27 soon. WMAR ABC 2 will soon blast its signal into central Delaware on 27 per the FCC repack so this will certainly confuse Delaware antenna users. But interestingly, this signal will emanate from Wilmington, DE's WSTW/WDEL site and cover all of northern Delaware from there to Dover. What's most interesting is that it will also be a fringe signal in Philadelphia, where ABC/Disney's own WPVI 6 is located. They have been floating ideas around about this northern DE signal for quite some time and the only thing I can think for this is the lack of existing towers to use between Dover and Wilmington. Are Sinclair's FCC woes over so soon? The FCC Enforcement Bureau has signaled that it is ok with the Administrative Law Judge dismissing the Sinclair/Tribune merger complaint now that all the applications have been dismissed and the merger abandoned. However, the Administrative Law Judge is the ultimate decision. To Jerry in Rockville, the best answer I can give you is that there is probably something blocking the feed from the satellite to your Sirius antenna. I used to have issues with my satellite radio connection in certain spots, especially in hilly terrain (like when I was visiting family in southwestern Virginia), and even next to buildings like fast food drive-thru lanes. There was always one spot on my former drive from Delaware to WCTR in Chestertown, MD where I would lose signal, likely due to the terrain. Keith Thompson (8/20/18)

Here is a guess as to why one might not get a satellite transmission between Glenmont and Aspen Hill. It's a long sharp downhill from south to north, and the combination of your antenna position, the full-leaf trees and angle from the equatorial satellites might prevent the satellite footprint from being strong enough to get through. I lose SiriusXM when on Route 108 going downhill at the Patuxent River and then going uphill (at the Howard/Montgomery border, either way), but only in the summer when the leaves are really thick. -- Carl in Olney (8/20/18)

I must politely disagree with that other person's description of the music on WWFD 820-AM and its repeaters. Maybe it has few listeners; maybe the music is not to someone's taste 24 hours/day; but it has no advertisers, no need for or interest in ratings for it, and shows the owner's interest in electronics and broadcast innovation and clever automated music selection, what with 5,000 songs (I read that somewhere) and smart and easiily changeable software algorithms. The sound quality of 820, especially compared to hybrid signals like WCAO-600 in Balto or even WCBS-880 (when I am in NYC) is really excellent. When I first tune to it, I get 3 seconds of white noise, 3 seconds of silence, then crystal clear music. In Olney, it's not 100% listenable; sometimes it "fades" (really, it just stops) then re-starts again. But there is not much to complain about, if you ask me. Back in the 1950s, people complained about FM radio and its picket fence effect and a radio's frequency drift when FM first came about. Nobody wanted it because the signal was unreliable, but engineers created an Automatic Frequency Control (AFC), dual antennas in cars, the stereo pilot signal, digital selection, and it became dominant. Perhaps, it will become the norm that AM radio becomes Hybrid Analog/Digital on all stations someday and doesn't sound so tinny due to the efforts of Hubbard and WWFD. -- Carl in Olney (8/17/18)

After two years of unfocused music which has resulted in a convincing last place in the contemporary music ratings, it looks like Fresh has moved into a clone of Mix 107.3 by playing fewer current hits and more 90's and 00's music. While it certainly has led to success for Mix, its hard to see anything different 94.7 is bringing to the format. With such great success in NYC and Philly with Classic Hits stations why Entercom continues with Hot AC is a mystery to me. (8/17/18)

I had mixed views about WTEM’s recently cancelled Cooley & Kevin program - great when discussing the local teams that at least one of them cared a lot about (Redskins, Wizards and Terps) but a different story with those they didn’t (Nationals, Capitals and colleges other than Maryland). Although they did a decent job covering the Caps’ title run, the best Sheehan could say on the day after they skated around with the Cup was that he was “happy for Ovechkin” – what about all the long suffering fans of the team? Chris Cooley’s “film breakdowns” of Skins games (where he critiqued every player on the team) were his main contribution to the show but during the non-football months he often seemed more interested in talking about his pottery collection or other trivial personal stuff than what was going on in DC sports. The show that Sheehan used to do with Thom Loverro was better – if he gets picked up by 106.7 The Fan, then perhaps they could be paired again although Loverro’s now co-hosting with Andy Pollin on Saturday mornings. Remember how well WHFS did in DC? It had good ratings and made money. Perhaps Entercom should put that format on their 107.9 WLZL. Their Spanish format is not doing well with a 0.9 Share in DC. They don't cover Herndon, Sterling, Manassas and Northern Virginia.....They could lease two Translators and simulcast them with 107.9 FM to cover the entire market. Any computer that accepts cookies is affected by the paywall at The Sun, The Post, and the NY Times. If you delete the cookies routinely, you can still avoid the restriction of the Paywall. But otherwise, it is still there. Not accepting cookies will not allow ANYONE to read Sun articles without signing into a paying Baltimore Sun account. That is the change. Private browsing does not avoid it anymore. It’s that simple. Now a Chromebook without an Intel processor not running Windows might pull up the phone version of The Sun website, which is a different page. If they don’t have a Paywall on that, they will soon. Tuned in WJLA-7’s Sunday night sports recap show hosted by Erin Hawksworth and she introduced her guest Scott Jackson as “host of the Redskins postgame show on radio”. What postgame show is that? – can’t be WTEM’s because Jackson just got laid off by that station and Al Galdi will be handling the postgame duties. Has Jackson already been picked up by 106.7 The Fan and assigned to their Skins gameday programming, or perhaps WMAL (which along with TEM carries the game broadcasts) plans to produce its own separate postgame show? Is Urban One’s gutting of 980’s staff the prelude to an imminent format flip or do they actually intend to try and compete with WJFK in the sports talk arena? Recently heard Chick Hernandez filling in there and he was asking listeners to call in with “your favorite movie”. Wow! – that’s really pushing the envelope and thinking outside the box; nobody in the long and storied history of talk radio has ever thought of that topic. The brass at 106.7 must be quaking in their boots at the notion of Hernandez being given a permanent gig by 980. (8/13/18)

Reason why 99.1 & 107.9 get poor rating in DC is because they are Baltimore markets stations that CBS thought they could turn into DC Market stations for more income. It’s like taking 101.9, 102.7, or 98 Rock and claiming they’re DC stations with the formats being geared to DC only. 99.1 comes in clear across the MD/PA line at Carroll, Baltimore and southern York County, PA. I think 107.9 carries well to at least just north of Baltimore. Can’t really remember since it’s been years since I put the dial on that station even for a moment. Meanwhile CBS’s attempt at Alt rock with HFS on that little 104.9 & 106.5 HD2 is just hilariously bad. Glad iHeart put it’s Alt-FM Alternative Rock brand on 104.3 HD2. (8/13/18)

Nick Smith on WTTG has bumped from job to job to job over the last few years - which should have raised a red flag with someone. His most recent was a year in gov’t PR. A year in PR somewhere else before that, and time as a 3rd string producer/reporter on the west coast prior to that. With the $1 billion dollar lawsuit, expect TBD Network to be gone from WPIX, WGN, & KTLA real soon. This is also a big set back for Next Generation TV, as Sinclair would have been one of the first to roll it out in NY, LA, & Chicago. Now Tribune will likely be the last to roll it out if ever. Now that WDCW 50 is for sale again, might CBS or ABC be interested in a DC O&O like NBC did in Boston? It would be a nasty fight, but that didn’t stop NBC from doing it. ABC also isn't as beholden to Sinclair as FOX as far as affiliates, so they might be interested in stealing from WJLA. I have no idea what CBS’s relationship is with Tegna. Also the other Sinclair collateral damage is that Fox doesn’t get the Seattle or other 6 TV stations it wanted. And then there’s still the big 3 still available. WPIX, KTLA, & WGN. Will or can CBS buy them? The $1 billion dollar Tribune lawsuit will undoubtably be settled out of court, and that’s not going to stop Sinclair from expanding. On August 4, The Washington Post carried an obituary about Jane Van Ryan, 69, who died of pancreatic cancer. She died in Timberville, Virginia July 1st. WJZ 13 CBS debuted its new anchorwoman, Nicole Baker, from Savannah, GA's ABC affiliate today along with new graphics and a new set & promos. The set has its own green room in the shape of a glass cube, and large touchscreen video boards surrounding the back of the set. WJZ's GM calls it a state of the art "network level" set. The music package is also changed, although it still doesn't seem to be the standard CBS music used in NYC, LA, or Philly although the graphics are now more similar to the NY package with the CBS eye prominent in the opening. Perhaps the reason that WLZL 107.9 has such poor ratings in DC is because their signal only covers half of the DC Market. It covers the Eastern half of the market but not areas with a high Spanish Population. It does not cover Manassas, Herndon, Sterling and the rest of Northern Virginia. (8/9/18)

Dave: Just got back from a work trip in New Mexico and managed to listen to 980 and I can't believe their new owners kept everyone around. My friend in New York radio told me a change means you immediately get rid of the P-D and all, if not, most of your unsuccessful talent...and, don't rehire "re-treads." Well, I guess that's what 980 didn't do. I read a past post in which Chick had an attitude and you know, he thinks he's the great talent in the market. I listened to him for a bit and question is, does he listen to himself...almost as bad a self- promoter as Czaban. I didn't intend on writing multiple Baltimore Sun stories today, but that's how the news today is going. Now after wiping comments clean, securing the Paywall, and increasing advertising with more virus laden spam, is The Baltimore Sun for sale? That is the news out of Chicago from the Chicago Tribune (which also wiped all its comments clean along with The Orlando Sentinel). Sun owner Tronc recently sold the LA Times and is now considering selling the Chicago Tribune and the rest of the Tronc newspapers, including The Baltimore Sun and Orlando Sentinel among others. Re: Fox5's Nick Smith, not only does he struggle with the teleprompter, he's horrible on that Like it or Not crap the station broadcasts five days a week. In fact, all of the hosts on that show are pretty unbearable to watch. The station keeps coming up with more and more "original" shows and throwing people on them. They already have their regular anchors working longer shifts by starting the morning news at 4am as well as having more evening news programs. They're trying to groom Nick just like they're trying to groom Erin Como for an anchor position. At the rate Fox5 is going, there will be nothing but original programming on for about 20 hours of,the day. (8/8/18)

Al Galdi announced on WTEM this morning that he’d be hosting their Redskins postgame show with Clinton Portis this season (replacing Scott Jackson who’d been doing it the past several years). So it’s apparently down to Galdi, Kevin Sheehan, Brian Mitchell, Steve Czaban and Scott Linn in terms of on-air talent on 980 – assuming no additional hires, a plausible daily lineup could be Galdi 6-10 AM (attracting the hardcore sports fans who don’t find the Junkies’ show to their liking), Sheehan and Mitchell 10-2, Czaban (with Linn and Steve Solomon) 2-6 and perhaps a highlights show in the 6 PM hour where the best interviews of the day were replayed. If the station’s owners are in position to bring on someone new, they could do a lot worse than Al Koken who’s been filling in during middays lately - I think there’s going to be a demand for increased attention to the Capitals on DC sports radio during their upcoming season now that they’ve shed the label of perennial playoff flops and won a championship and no local broadcaster’s been associated with coverage of that franchise for a longer period of time than Koken. Presumably Chris Cooley and Doc Walker are precluded from landing at 106.7 The Fan due to their roles on the Skins’ radio broadcasts but I’d certainly expect Jackson (who previously worked there) and Bram Weinstein to be knocking on WJFK’s door before long if they haven’t already done so. Interesting that WLIF-HD2 is in the ratings. But it's really because it has a repeater on 106.1 MHz; I assume that's what everyone is listening to. Same with WWMX-HD2 having a repeater on 104.9. Only WPOC's HD2 channel has no repeater, so it's quite a feat to register in the ratings at all. Too bad Baltimore's 93.5 run by the Maryland MTA isn't listened to more: Smooth Jazz and traffic reports, all day long, and blasted over loudspeakers at various Baltimore Light Rail stations. They’re back: WMAL 105.9 FM & 630 AM will bump The Mark Levin Show for the REDSKINS at the New England Patriots preseason game at 7:30PM on Thursday, August 9th which can also been seen on television on WRC channel 4. According to the REDSKINS web site: “It will be the first time the teams have met in the preseason since 2014 when the Redskins defeated the Patriots, 23-6, at FedEx Field. With Thursday’s matchup, the Redskins have now faced the Patriots in preseason play more than any other team since 1961.” The WMAL broadcast will be sans Sonny who does not travel for SKINS games and who knows who will be doing the WMAL play-by-play for this worthless preseason game but SKINS fans can take pleasure knowing that the hateful Dan Snyder will not be making money charging outrageous prices for food, drinks and parking. Radio Zindagi, the South Asia-format broadcaster formerly heard on WCTN has relaunched a metro DC radio presence. Radio Zindagi now appears on WERQ HD2 in Baltimore. The stations are totally managed by Sinclair, so that explains why only Sinclair is being investigated. I imagine if anything goes further, it will head towards ownership. #2 The Sun paywall change is well documented. Even subscribers have to log in while in private browsing mode to see pages. Now it’s possible that The Sun is offering more free pages per month to non-subscribers in the interim. But The Washington Post and NY Times are not doing this, nor do I see how it will help sales. I find the move somewhat inexplicable. Cracking down on non-subscribers who will probably never subscribe while annoying your subscribers at the same time? I’m wondering why Sinclair’s LMA partners (e.g. Cunningham and Deerfield) aren’t named in the ad price fixing suit too? At the very least, the Justice department should be looking at that too. I guess a LMA is legal price fixing? WBFF, WBFF2 (MyTV Baltimore / was WUTB, which is now running TBD on 45.3), and WNUV share the same sales director. In reference to the question about missing voice track on TV commercials, the first thing that comes to mind is the commercial was either created or dubbed into the system out-of-phase. Meaning the left track was dubbed into the right channel and the right track was dubbed into the left channel. While this rarely occurs anymore, have you ever heard a song on a FM station that plays just the music without the lead singer? That's what you're hearing. (8/7/18)

I haven't written for awhile, and but those commercials that have no sound are doing that to imply that life is just plain normal with that prescription; there never is sound on that ad, and Mrs. Olney realized it's on purpose; the fact that people are around and that you are alive is their point. Also, it's been bugging me; someone wrote a month ago that Rob Bamberger of WAMU had died; when WAMU said he "wasn't with us anymore", I think they just meant he was laid off. And one question: When the NPR people tell us to say "Alexa, play NPR", or to ask for your local station, what do you get if you don't pick your local station? Does it decide which station is closest, or is it always, for example, WNYC, or WGBH, or is it some generic feed from NPR, like the one on SiriusXM? It almost (not quite, but almost) makes me want to buy one just to find out. Odd thing. I was watching Newschannel 8's rebroadcast of the ABC World News at 9:30 pm over Xfinity in Montgomery County. The commercials--usually the pharmaceutical commercials--are missing the speaking on the audio track. You hear the background music, but no talking. This has been going on for months. Gezzzuss -- What is WITH you bellyachers about Don and/or Mike and their current choice of media? So they're guys who spent most of their adult lives in broadcasting, transitioned out of it for various reasons, and now they're just working to carve out their own pieces of the pie in a new form - podcasting. They took something they got enjoyment out of (and success for a long time) and found another way to implement it, free from the old corporate ties. I would wager that most of you who seem to have an issue with that probably are radio castoffs who wouldn't know how to reinvent yourselves if your lives depended on it, and even then would still lack the creativity to deal with it once you got up and running. And how about educating yourselves on how podcasts work? Even the big guns in it like Carolla have to hustle to stay operational... Things like Patreon are how tons of podcasts stay afloat... direct contributions, much like PBS. I'm not going to claim to be an expert, but I doubt it's likely that any podcast that outlasts its 1st or even 5th anniversary can be categorized an abject failure....they obviously ain't doing everything wrong. The FCC has hatched a new rule called "Diversity Incubator" .......It is designed to help Minorities get into station ownership. What is a Minority? Some of their other plans never worked. Remember the Minority Tax Certificate? Then there was the LPTV Rule designed to help Minorities get into TV station ownership. Channel 6 LPTV was an example that did not work. It was intended to help Minorities own TV Stations. However, the owners discovered they could make more money operating as a FM Radio Station using their audio Channel on 87.1 FM. Now that Bram Weinstein's radio gig is up, at least he has something to do in the interim with that awful Like it or Not show on Fox5. The initial promos showed Britt McHenry, Bram and some,guy named Guy Lambert. Watched one episode and they've now added a new anchor, Nick Smith and reporter Marina Marocco. Could only watch about 10 minutes. And this show is on five nights a week!! Wonder what kind of ratings it's getting. I won't cheer for anyone losing their job, but the changes at WTEM are long overdue. Cooley and especially Walker are dead weight who have brought nothing to the station, and Bram Weinstein has sounded like he'd rather be doing anything other than be on the air. I heard a "live" read, probably better described as a personal endorsement by Junkie JP last Tuesday morning that sounded like it was recorded in his kitchen on his computer because obviously it was. It shows how far WJFK has gone into "no longer care" mode. If I were the PD I would have pretty much fired whoever was responsible for letting that catastrophe air. Oh wait, the PD is responsible for the station. If I were the client I would be right up the AE for a refund. This is what happens when you don't have a PD for a station. Or a Production guy. WCAO was owned by Plough Incorporated(Bayer Aspirin,See and Ski sun tan lotion)etc. they had stations in Memphis,Atlanta,Boston Chicago and Baltimore. WBSB 104.3 was owned by Scripps Howard at the time. They owned Radio and TV stations in Nashville,Portland,Oregon,Memphis,Cincinnati and Baltimore. They would eventually buy WMAR channel 2 here in Baltimore which they still own. In a weird twist of fate WCAO 600 and Now WZFT 104.3 as well as WPOC 93.1 are all co-owned by IHeart Media. No less than Abbey Road Studios is selling digital plug-ins to recording studios in order for them to recreate the sound of 1968: Tape recorder emulations, vinyl simulators, Equalizers, Mixing Consoles and the like. A company called Izotope has a free plug-in that makes everything sound like a 78rpm record played on an old phonograph. Why shouldn't receivers have such an option? When I was a kid, I can remember WBSB 104.3 and WCAO-AM 600 swapping morning shows. Louie and the Bear went from WCAO 600 to WBSB 104.3, while Scott Carpenter went from WBSB 104.3 to 600. I think the switch took place at the same time with both stations signing on their newly-swapped morning shows. Were the stations co-owned? I don't believe they were. How did this arrangement work? Scott stayed on through the country format at WCAO, and I believe that Louie and the Bear just disappeared from WBSB. Would love to hear the story behind this switch. Thanks! (8/1/18)
