KTLA Anchor Chris Burrous' Death Investigated as Possible Overdose: Glendale Police (12/31/18)

Channel 4 seems to be slowly weeding out older, less attractive people. How much longer will Mark Segraves - winner of the Keith Richards lookalike contest - last? The dude is approaching 60 and looks it. Dresses badly and has more cracks on his face than the Memorial Bridge. Four can save a few bucks by putting this dinosaur out to pasture. (12/31/18)

DCRTV readers over sixty who frequented Georgetown n the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s might recall the infamous “Balloon Man” (Maurice Johnson) who was an icon of the lively Wisconsin & M Streets. John “The Answer Man” Kelly of the Washington Post asked his readers about their memories of this colorful man and the comments are worth reading: www.washingtonpost.com (12/31/18)

CNN is putting the gay back in News Years Gala with Andy Cohen and Cooper Anderson. The two iconic BBF (Butt Buddies Forever) will host CNN’s coverage of Times Square beginning at 8:00PM New Year’s Eve. Last year, it was Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin, who was dropped by CNN for a ghastly photo of her holding a bloody Trump head. No word if Don Lemon (who was visibly drunk last time he hosted CNN’s News Year’s Eve show) will join them for a ménage a trois... (12/31/18)

Chris, The Rooster, Russell just called Josh Johnson a “Jabroni”. If anyone on JFK is a Jabroni, it is Chris Russell. He fills in when needed. He went from a football insider to a Caps guy last year to keep him busy. Whenever someone breaks a story, he tags on…..saying he contributed. Chris, they name is Jabbroni! JJ has stayed around the NFL for a decade. Not easy. Stick to making bets to walk to Redskin park. (12/31/18)

As iHeart continues to avoid bankruptcy and we enter 2019 the word is that new ownership is in the near future for WFRE and WFMD in Frederick. The new owners will bring in much needed new management but likely keep most air staff. (12/31/18)

Clay Anderson, your audience for your WTOP weather forecasts on the 8s is in your listening area, not viewing area. (12/30/18)

Did Entercom botch a possible deal with the Redskins? For a couple of months it seemed that WJFK was romancing the NFL franchise in an attempt to lock all four major sports teams under one flag. Alas, after team owner Dan Snyder fired his staff in charge of "Getting People to Care" about the team, it seems not to be. The hosts on WJFK have gone back to bashing team owner Dan Snyder and GM George Allen. Prior to that one could tune in and count on glowing game day experience reviews, (from the luxery boxes), by various WJFK personalities and positive reinforcement of the somewhat mediocre product on the field. Could this signal a deal in the future between the Skins and long lost flagship WMAL which carried simulcast coverage of the games this season? It seems painfully obvious that 980 is on the ropes after it's recent sale and the signal has been inadequate since the very beginning. WMAL would offer both it's 630 AM and 105.9 FM signals for a sizable footprint in the DC market and outer suburbs. Perhaps Snyder and Co. were less than impressed with drunken frat boy use-to-bes drinking his booze for free and rubbing elbows with DC's better ad buyers. MAL's target demos mesh much better with the Redskin's brand and the addition of Sunday afternoon programming away from MAL's frenetic political fare would round out the weekly schedule nicely. Every Monday morning Mary Walter could wear a Redskins cheerleader uniform! On a final note, it's time to tighten up the broadcast booth. Let Doc go as he contributes nothing analytically. Replace him with Lindsay Czarniak on the sidelines. The fans would love her, she'd probably boost ticket sales, and her sideline coverage would be excellent. Does any radio broadcasting team in the league even have a female colleague? Tighten the booth to just Larry and Chris Cooley as Chris has improved immensely next to Larry and can offer both offensive and defensive schematic analysis. Put Sonny in the owners box to enjoy the game and hang out, and bring him in for a halftime game status piece. It's no surprise that WJFK couldn't pull it off. It's had the same tired management for a decade with no real experience in sports programming. When a real opportunity landed in their lap, they choked. Being the Gold Standard sports franchise in the market, the Redskins don't NEED anyone, but they deserve a competent programming department and that's what WMAL has. (12/30/18)

Bad news for Ravens fans in PA. Sinclair owned WHP CBS 21 has dumped the Ravens game for the Steelers game. While Harrisburg is a secondary NFL market for the Ravens, because it's a home game in Baltimore, the NFL gives them that option. Only away games are forced to be televised. But how will Sinclair's relationship with the Ravens in DC or up there be affected? Hmm. (12/30/18)

Format flip in Southern Maryland as SOMAR flips WMDM 97.7 again to oldies/classic hits. In the past several years the frequency has been CHR, Classic Rock, Active Rock, Soft A/C, hot a/c and probably something else too. I haven’t listened long enough to tell if its satellite fed or locally programmed. It also appears the only station that has a local jock anymore is WSMD Star 98.3 with the TBone and Heather morning show. The rest of the day is canned Westwood One jocks from their hot a/c local service. Co-owned Country 102.9 and the new 97.7 Bay FM do not have any jocks listed on their websites. Both used to have at least a local morning jock. 1690 WPTX runs America’s Best Music from Westwood One. And, of course 1560 still chugs along simulcasting 102.9 - which is kind of strange in itself. A class D Daytimer that high on the dial is still in existence?!? MLB4 (12/30/18)

It’s so sad to hear about Ken Phillips’ passing. I wasn’t in Balto to see him as a weatherman, and never met him, but I did have the pleasure of recording his next-day weather phoners for WLIF while I was board-opping Fran’s pre-recorded Sunday evening show. Ken was a class act and it was always a pleasure talking to him. He would call in when he was ready to record the weather, he would have me record it on our “360” recorder, after which I would cut the recordings into three or four files to use next day. One time, he got through his four casts only to find out something happened to the “360” which hadn’t actually recorded. If he was upset, he sure didn’t show it. he just chuckled and said “OK, let’s make it better this time” or something like that. when he got done with the repeats, I checked to make sure the casts were recorded, then we chuckled about it and agree it must have been meant to happen so we could stay on the phone longer. I wish I had met him, but loved hearing him nonetheless. I would love to have seen him in action on TV, and I do know many of my friends loved watching his weathercasts. I’m sure he will be missed by lots of folks, but for me, all I can say is, thanks for being such a true gentleman, and thanks for making my evening shift a delight. Bill Powers, Las Vegas (12/29/18)

Re:Allison Seymour, as per her Instagram account, she’ll still be at Fox5. Looks like WHUR will be a side gig. (12/28/18)

I think the Detroit "branch" of Birach Broadcasting is still run by the old man. WDMV out this way is (or at least was) being run by Junior. The Birach website still announces - in bright red text - that our nearby "Birach Broadcasting" is not legit. And speaking of local Birach operations ... I see where WGOP in Pocomoke City is up for license renewal in ten more months - - or so it says on Radio Locator. Are they even on the air at all? The website [www.easternshoremedia.net/wgop-540am] is a blank page, and I dont hear a peep of their whopping 500W signal anywhere. (12/28/18)

To the obvious CSN person responding to a recent post about pre/postgame shows... gee, if people are watching, why aren't your super talent anchoring from an important Redskins game down here in Nashville. I guess you had the weekend crew working in the studio because we couldn't even tell Grant was on-camera due to no lights in your studio. I'm not in the business, however, some people who used to work at CSN have said that they hire the worst people, well, it shows. Also, how can you take seriously their Redskins beat reporter when he's on the field in Nashville wearing sunglasses and looks ridiculous. Hmmmm, and people aren't going to games and instead, staying home and watching TV? (12/27/18)

Is Allison Seymour going to WHUR? And if so I wonder if Angie Goff is her replacement??? If you look at Allison page on Christmas there’s a big clue. (12/27/18)

I guess I don’t really care but you might. WBAL NewsNow is not news now but news later. One of their talk show guys has been on since 4pm, except for the top and bottom of the hour when they run the standard newscast. I suppose this has something to do with money, because almost everything in radio does. (12/26/18)

Empty words from Sinclair Management as staff continues to leave in droves due to lousy pay, the loss of respected News Director, Mitch Jacob, excessive whining about the budget, not hiring essential staff to fill vacancies, continuing to operate under old union contracts, etc.. Typical big business greed and insincerity is alive and well at Sinclair. This is the latest b.s. from Sinclair Broadcasting to its employees as we head into 2019. "We firmly believe that our employees are our most valuable resource and the contribution of each individual is critically important to our overall success. We are committed to creating and maintaining an environment where employees are able to realize their maximum potential while contributing to the working efficiency and long-term growth of Sinclair." "Our goal is to make an outstanding and on-going contribution to each community we serve so that our stations become leading forces in their markets. This can only be achieved if each and every one of us is entirely dedicated to the highest standards of excellence in all we do. We wish you success in your position and know that you will quickly come to share the pride we have in our stations and the Sinclair team." David Smith, Rob Smith, Fred Smith, Duncan Smith. FYI--Derek Hunter, the former WBAL talk show host is hosting some programs on WMAL this week. He filled in for Larry O'Connor on Monday, December 24th. He will fill in for Chris Plante December 26-28. (12/26/18)

Re Sports Radio in DC. Someone wrote to the Mailbag that former pro players are good sports talk radio hosts who draw in listeners. I think some names may draw folks in initially, but most former athletes -- in this market anyway -- are just not that good at hosting sports talk and eventually fail. Riggins, Cooley, Arrington, etc. They are usually rich guys who used to play the game and, let's face it, aren't necessarily that into watching others play and keeping up with the latest in the same way fans do. They often have more interesting stuff to do and the means to do it. So even if they do try sports talk hosting, you can't really expect that they'll follow all of the local sports teams to the degree necessary to have anything interesting to say. The best sports talk hosts are passionate and opinionated observers who are also entertaining communicators, not a bunch of has-been athletes. (12/26/18)

Kudos to Steve Chenevey for being the professional that he is & tolerating Cori Coffin as his co-anchor. Yeah, I’m sure she’s excited about now being a permanent weekend anchor & filling in this a.m., but she’s quite annoying & tries way too hard to fit in. Should've known with today being pretty much a holiday that Fox5 would have “subs” hosting on the Good Day show. And shouldn’t have been surprised that they were Erin & Kevin. Tried to give it a chance, but 10 minutes in, time to change channel. (12/24/18)

"At 1pm WUSA 9 is supposed to be airing a NFL game between Houston and Philadelphia." Directv had a Don't-Call-Us-We-Have-A-Technical-Problem screen up to some point of the 2nd half of the NFL game and the HD feed came back before the std feed. (12/24/18)

The price of the iHeart Stock is 52 cents per share OTC now. Their last report showed they have $12 Billion in Assets and $24 Billion in DEBT! If they sold off all their assets, they still could not pay off their DEBT. (12/24/18)

iHeart continues in Bankruptcy......one delay then another. They could start by selling off the 13 stations they have "parked" in their "Trust". Some have been " parked" their for over 10 years. WFMD and WFRE have been in their "Trust" for over 10 YEARS! iHeart enjoys the cash flow from theses stations. Under the FCC Rules, they agreed to sell them in 2008 to comply with FCC Rules on ownership. The LOOPHOLE in the FCC Rules, is that they don't designate WHEN they must sell the stations. Shame on the FCC for not eliminating these loopholes in their rules. (12/24/18)

Sad to see Angie Goff leave 4, as she was one of the last watchable anchors on what’s become Telemundo Lite. The rolling R’s and enunciation out of Culver and Gonzalez are over the top. They’ve pushed me to JLA, and the sincerely lovable Jessob Reisbeck. (12/24/18)

Why would or should WJFK hire anyone from 980 am? Because when Entercom gains the rights to broadcast the Redskins, Dan Snyder is going to own that bitch. Having rights to all 4 sports teams in DC will make WJFK very attractive to other sports host personalities as well. Anyone heard from Lindsey Czarniak? You very well may...and soon. She may be pricey but you could staff a shift with her as the lead for a fraction of the Junkies budget. You could fill all the dayparts at JFK on the Junkies budget. Companies don't care about ratings anymore. With TEM gone they'll have ALL the market share. This will make JFK very attractive to media buyers looking to reach sports fans exclusively. Sports fans listen to former and current players. Players draw fans in. Players also already have a lot of money so there isn't any need to pay them enough to have nice houses, drive fancy cars, and send their kids to private schools (generally). Players will do it because they love the sports not because they need the money. Players also like doing appearances, draw better at those appearances, and create more revenue for the sales department through those appearances. One thing WJFK will need to get down is that it's very schizophrenic right now because it doesn't really have a program director with solid extensive sports programming experience. After 6pm you don't know who is on, or what team, or sport, or college for that matter. And weekends are a mess. No focus or cohesion whatsoever. That will be the biggest challenge going forward. Entercom has it's work cut out for for it but if they can pull it off they will have a station that every other market in the country would kill for. (12/24/18)

Correction on my previous Mailbag submission: Final sentence should read 'but a heck of a lot better than 980 AM where it gets better at night with Freddie Coleman and ESPN Radio Sports Center.' Error: but a heck of a lot better than 980 AM where the best comes with Freddie Coleman and Amy Lawrence. Thank you. (12/24/18)

I really enjoy Bolly 102.9 FM in Northern Virginia. The unique sound is entertaining and different. (12/23/18)

WTEM at 980 AM was, is, and always will be about the worst sports-talk radio station ever. So why would or should WJFK, 106.7 FM, hire anyone from 980 AM? WJFK may not be nearly as good as those stations in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, etc, but a heck of a lot better than 980 AM where the best comes with Freddie Coleman and Amy Lawrence. (12/23/18)

Turns out Brett Hollander is not leaving WBAL at all. I asked him. He’s moved to 3-6pm. The WBAL website has not yet been updated to show that though. — BaltoMedia.net (12/23/18)

At 1pm WUSA 9 is supposed to be airing a NFL game between Houston and Philadelphia. Instead, some infomercial is on. Are they having problems (a crawl would be nice if so), or is TEGNA reaching a new low? There are no blackout restrictions in place - the Ravens and Redskins played yesterday. CBS has the doubleheader. (12/23/18)

I noticed that it didn’t take long for WRC to remove Angie Goff’s picture off the website. With most who exit, it takes a few days to remove them. She must have burned some bridges. (12/23/18)

Year-end comments on local TV newspeople I avoid watching. Angie Goff, with a voice that sounds like a hacksaw on sheet metal. In the same category, Ashley Hinson, the one with a bad eye trying hard to sound tough, a voice that's a cross between Jayne Miller and Doreen Gentzler. Andy Hopkins doesn't seem to get why he's there at all, and Lisa Robinson always seems disinterested and tired. Not much left. I'll get my news from an app, thank you. (12/21/18)

Who gives a rat's ass about pre- or post- game radio and TV shows. The game is yet to be played or OVER! It's all bullshit. Airtime wasted. It doesn't bother me when people return home, like Veronica Johnson returned to WJLA. And one move is ok by me; Leon Harris was unemployed so WRC move was great. and underused Annie YU to WUSA is a substantial move up. "Anyone know why the Redskins game at Jacksonville last Sunday was televised by CBS and not FOX" Since the latest TV contracts took effect in 2014, the league reserves the right to move games between CBS and Fox. This is normally for visibility purposes, allowing a high-profile game to be moved from regional coverage at 1 to 4:25 on the other network when the other network has the doubleheader, like Dallas-Washington which aired in week 7 on CBS. In this case it is because Tampa Bay was at Baltimore, which was also on Fox - so both games could be televised all over the southeast instead of one or the other getting minimal coverage. (12/19/18)

Who gives a rat's ass about pre- or post- game radio and TV shows. The game is yet to be played or OVER! It's all bullshit. Airtime wasted. Run decent programming until the game begins and after it is over. This is why sports broadcast radio and TV is dying. Know-nothings speculating about the game. F the Redskins Report. They suck. Snyder sucks. Check the empty seats in FedEx Field. (12/19/18)

Since NFL ratings have declined, CBS and FOX renegotiated the NFL TV contract slightly, demanding more control of some key matchups. The hard and fast rules are not so hard and fast anymore. The changes were largely initiated by CBS who’s AFC has more small market teams. (12/19/18)

Angie Goff to Fox5? Hmmm, I don’t know about that. Yeah, she’s heavy into social media, but can’t believe she’s willing to leave an anchor spot to just do social media posting stuff. If indeed she’s going there, I believe she was probably promised an anchor spot. And if any of the anchors over there have heard rumblings of her coming, I’m sure they’re thinking the same thing & wondering if they’re going to be replaced. If so, wonder WHO she’d replace. And finally, she had a partnership with the NBC network, doing some occasional segments & filling in on the early pre-Today show news broadcasts. So if anything, I could see her going to the network. But hey, we’ll see. (12/19/18)

WTMD announced Monday that Matt Galler, host of Afternoon Drive and The Saturday Alternative, is leaving after nine years at the station. Amy Freedman will fill in as Afternoon Drive host in the interim. Any idea as to what's his next move? (12/18/18)

Hi Dave and Merry Christmas! To answer the question: I Heart will survive Cumulous and Urban One won’t or will merge with someone else. (12/18/18)

Anyone know why the Redskins game at Jacksonville last Sunday was televised by CBS and not FOX? - I thought it was written into the contractual agreements with the NFL that for an interconference (NFC vs. AFC) game, the network of the road team's conference (FOX in this case) always got to show it. Have to call a foul on both DC sports radio stations (980 and 106.7) for talking more about "big picture" stuff with the Skins than the actual game on their respective pregame shows. There are essentially two functions of a local pregame show: 1) help fans get to the stadium (if it's a home game), and 2) preview the upcoming matchup - nobody's tuning in for speculation about which coach or front office exec might get canned at the end of the season. Caught Andy Pollin and Thom Loverro on WJFK last Saturday and despite having four hours to fill, they somehow couldn't find time for even a passing mention of Ovechkin getting his second consecutive hat trick the previous night. That's the equivalent of John Wall scoring 40 points twice in a row or (soon to be ex-Nat) Bryce Harper hitting three home runs in two straight games and you know darn well that P & L would have talked at length about either of those accomplishments had they occurred. Of course Pollin was a big time wet blanket when it came to hockey discussion and coverage over the course of his lengthy tenure at WTEM and apparently (despite the Caps having ending DC's 26 year title drought in the major pro sports earlier this year) hasn't changed his tune a bit since joining The Fan. Re: HFS 104.9 Signal: It is probably related to the tower move, but it doesn’t seem to be on low power because I can get the signal wherever I was able to get it before and it’s pretty consistent. It seems like the frequency has drifted slightly off of 104.9 and it sounds muffled (at least on my car radio). Also, this issue has been going on at least a month. Prior to that, there were other issues with the audio feed cutting out completely for a second every few minutes. It just seems like they don’t care and the station has been completely unlistenable for several months. (12/18/18)

So Larry oconnor agrees with tucker carlson's dirty immigrant comments when will entercom fire this piece of shit? (12/18/18)

I think I might have the answer to the HFS 104.9 signal issues. They are moving from one tower to the other, I’m guessing to the WNST 1590 tower. I saw it in FCC docs and it was right next. I cannot think of any other tower next to WLIF 101.9. Anyway, they might have used a lower power backup during the move or maybe the new tower situation is cheaper but not as good. They claimed no change in service on the move, but maybe they’re not done. (12/18/18)

Anyway, I didn't think there was anything worse that CSN's Redskins pre/postgame coverage but there is... how about their Wizards shows! Also, does Chris know he's a TV guy or the CSN people don't care that he doesn't know how to use make-up. What a minor league product they put out! (12/17/18)

“What’s up with HFS @104.9 …?” I’m wondering the same thing, but for a different reason. I’ve attempted listening over the air and my radio can never lock into it, even when I am driving on Cromwell Bridge Rd. (near the tower). I think the frequency has shifted off of 104.9. It’s been like this for months and I made a comment on their website, but didn’t get a response. If they aren’t going to fix the signal, why have it powered up? No one can listen to it. (12/17/18)

The new CEO for Nielsen is Dave Kenny. I hope you will reconsider a decision made by the previous administration about Radio Audience. They decided not to list any Radio Stations that do no subscribe to Nielsen. The advertising agencies are using your ratings to make their advertising buys. I was listening to WBAL this morning and Andrew Langer was filling in for Peter Schmuck. As he was closing the show, he mentioned that he's filling in for Laura Ingraham this coming Friday. I think this is the fourth or fifth time he's done this. And I don't know about that other WBAL fan, but I think Dan Joseph sounds exactly like Brett Hollander, only with even fewer opinions. Plus, unlike Langer, he's an ardent Never Trumper, so lumping them together makes no sense. (12/16/18)

Still hearing the dead-air signal on 101.7 in southern DC. Stronger towards the southeast end of the I-95 Beltway near Joint Based Andrews but it could be anywhere in the general area. I suspect it is a spur generated from within a commercial FM broadcast transmitter then somehow amplied. (I once ran across this on a ham repeater - darn amplifier section dumped out an unmodulated spur that could be heard for 40 miles...). If this is a new translator I would really like to know... These radio stocks....well apparently they still find the money to pay those on the air despite the low prices for their stocks. Take Salem for example. Their Denver station KNUS recently took Steffan Tubbs for afternoons. Tubbs I heard from some of their clients makes 6 figures doing a show for KNUS. How ?? Even Tubbs himself had said that he is paid "real well" and he was the highest paid announcer in Denver radio when he was on KOA according to the Denver Post. To pay Stubbs that kind of money and Salem stock is $2.56 ?? I don't get it !! (12/16/18)

Angie Goff announced this morning that she’s leaving NBC4. No info on what’s next for her. (12/16/18)

With Angie Goff leaving channel 4, now the guessing game begins as to who will replace her. I’m thinking it will be an internal promotion of a remote reporter to anchor desk. Maybe Meagan Fitzgerald? (12/16/18)

Regarding the 12/7 post from the WBAL Engineers, congratulations on a job (apparently) well done. I am happy to see that there are still people at WBAL that take pride in their work. Looks like you are few and far between. But....and I'm sorry...SO WHAT ! This is the equivalent of the pro sports team that you carry. They are the definition of mediocrity, being 1 or 2 games above .500 since their last Super Bowl appearance. And what have they touted this year ? New Video Boards and Escalators, while the on-field product remains mired in mediocrity. There is no 'buzz' in the region about the engineering upgrades at WBAL. Again. nice job. but the audience doesn't care. Maybe they should have taken that money and upgraded their 'talent' You have , the Black version of Nestor Aparacio in C4. They don't talk, they YELL. I listened to for 30 minutes one day. The longest C4 kept his damned mouth shut was 22 seconds, interrupted one caller 7TIMES !! Quality radio. And now we have what I refer to as the 3 Stooges....Dan Joseph, Andrew Langer, and Chris (I think) Rogers. They are think alike, talk alike and more importantly for radio, sound alike. From our superb engineering staff led by Drew Pinkey & Bryan Harz: WBAL Radio and Hearst Stations are proud to announce the completion of a brand new studio for WBAL Radio. After many faithful years of service, the old studio was taken apart, walls were removed to make more room, and a new, multi-media facility was built. This new WBAL Studio space is based on Wheatstone Audio-Over-IP technology, using the latest LXE Console from Wheatstone. The console is designed to be fully flexible, with almost all buttons able to be custom programmed for the needs of the station. The ability within the IP domain to leverage any and all audio sources and destinations within the system allow WBAL to connect to over 20 remote locations simultaneously with the right audio mixes to every location. Staff are able to listen to custom mixes as news breaks so they can keep tabs on what is happening from multiple sources. HP Mini PCs power the various needs in the studio for audio editing and internet research. Both old and new are incorporated into the space, with 14 TVs and 28 computer monitors rounding out the new, and an authentic WBAL Radio Tower side-marker light from 1935 being reused as an on-air light bringing up the old. There is also an original “On-Air” light from the previous building facility dating back to the 1960’s that was been revitalized with LED lighting and in use once more. Live cameras follow the active studio parties speaking, and send out a video stream from 9am to 4pm that we call the “WBAL LIVECAM.” Two virtual “windows” in the form of LED TVs using live camera shots from the 101.5 FM Radio tower, and from our downtown camera feed from our sister-station WBAL-TV, allow the WBAL Radio staff to see what is happening outside. The new WBAL Radio studio is ready to power WBAL into the exciting talk, breaking news and fast-paced sports environments of the 21st century and beyond. (12/7/18)

The Stock Market had a big loss this past week. These Radio Stocks should come back. Now seems like a good time to invest ......Here are some of the stocks we have been following: Beasley $4.83, Emmis $3.90, Entercom $6.49, Salem $2.71 and Urban One $2.29. (12/7/18)

Nielsen is NOT possessed by evil spirits. They just want to make money for their stockholders! They have no obligation to list Radio Stations that do not subscribe to their service. If Stations want to know their share of audience they can subscribe to Nielsen. The Advertising Agencies get a special "rate" to subscribe to their service. Since the Advertising Agencies use Nielsen numbers to buy advertising time they can avoid stations that do not pay Nielsen. Nielsen is the only National Rating Service. What does it cost for a DC Station to subscribe to Nielsen? (12/7/18)

WHP is Harrisburg, not Philly. (12/7/18)

Glad I did not listen to WMAL this week. Golly! I missed Mike Moss. If I would have heard him I would have thought I was in The Twilight Zone entering the Halloween Zone. I could imaging how he handled all the pomp and sad circumstance in DC this week. But, I won't. Way to scary to imagine. (12/718)

Thought it was odd that WTTG FOX 5 did not cover the Bush funeral in Texas today. Neither did WBOC FOX 21 on Delmarva. But I know that FOX News offered the feed to all the local stations or so they said on air. (12/6/18)

Memo to Potomac Radio, owners of WCRW(AM) 1190 Leesburg: you may have noticed the buzz being enjoyed right now by 94.7 The Drive. Plain and simple, Oldies work. Please drop that hideous and unnecessary China Radio International and go all-live all-Oldies in 2019. Your three sticks send out an incredible signal and the DC metro population deserves so much better. (12/7/18)

Metro 93.5 FM in Baltimore is a unique station and sounds better every day......give it a listen. Some people say "it is my favorite station". In DC you can hear its Smooth Jazz and info about which Baltimore bus route is stuck in traffic over loudspeakers at the Kensington MARC Station. -- Carl in Olney (12/6/18)

All Bush no Rush: talker Rush Limbaugh replaced by Ken Matthews of WHP Philadelphia Wednesday presumably to attend President George Herbert Walker Bush’s Washington funeral service. Nielsen is no more a monopoly than McDonald's and surprise, they charge for their service. So in your world everything should be free and taken if necessary or desired. We ended that system in 1865. There are at least three ratings companies in the U.S. Get over it. The posters talking about radio receivers in smartphones are correct except what is the point of a radio receiver "in disaster situations when radio and TV are out of service"? With an AM receiver you could detect which of your neighbors' houses had a security system for looting purposes but that's too big for a smart phone. GHWB is on tour like the ... well he may not be grateful but he is most certainly dead. "We're going downtown to pay our respects to the box." Gus in the Gaithersburg (12/5/18)

Word has it that Mike Garber, of station KUTV in Salt Lake City, may have been offered the job of News Director at WJLA-TV in Arlington, VA. Recent comments on several websites have employees of KUTV characterizing Mr. Garber as a "tyrant" and sincerely hoping that he is about to be moved to the DMV, while a number of newsroom employees at WJLA are already looking for work elsewhere as the exodus continues. In the event that Sinclair transfers Mr. Garber, or another very conservative, pro-Trump, Sinclair toe-the-line guy to WJLA, a significant number of employees are not planning to wait around and see how much worse things can get. With all the negative publicity Sinclair has deservedly received over the last year, and continues to receive, from issues dealing with Tribune Media, Sebastian Gorka, Boris Epshteyn, etc., one would think that a light would eventually go off over the head of someone in the Corporate Clown office. As if Sinclair does not have enough of a problem at WJLA, a recent flood in the Newsroom has again caused great concern by staff over the serious possibility of mold, etc. affecting the health of staff so much so that rumor has it OSHA has already been contacted. More to follow..... (12/4/18)

Buy low, sell high is sound advice I agree except radio stations don't produce a physical product. They are in the entertainment business, (supposedly), so in order to increase their value they need to increase audience share in order to raise demand for ad buys from media buyers. Currently there is no intention of radio stations in the DC market to do that. In fact, the example of the Cleveland radio station banning "Baby It's Cold Outside" is a perfect example of the backwards mentality of pandering to media buyers who want "safe" programming over any other potential threat of offending their core clients. It is nothing more than a stunt to lure ad dollars without putting any real work into it. It will probably work too because after the Janet Jackson Superbowl fiasco, media buyers moved right in and have since dictated what will be tolerated and what will not. That's why you constantly hear "Hotel California" and "Don't Stop Believin'" all day long. It's safe. As far as whether a station buy by a deep pocket company like Apple would spike the share price? I suppose it might but I'm not a money guy. I can assure you that there will be no change in programming because the infrastructure won't change. Same PDs, same VPs, same recycled jocks. Then the shares come back down to their previous deflated values. So sure, buy a few, (thousand), shares at 40 cents and speculate on a buy out. Then sell after it spikes and before it returns to it's bloated budget reality. Gotta pay Rush's contract, Bobby Bean, and Ryan Seacrest's saleries first. Goes for Howard too. Ultimately to better understand what's on the radio, listen to the commercials not the the music or hosts. They're irrelevant. (12/4/18)

The problem with getting FM on an iPhone is that FM requires an antenna usually provided by the cord of the wired headphones inserted into the headphone jack and newer iPhones don't have headphone jacks. My BlackBerry Mobile KeyONE (bought in 2017) has FM and a headphone jack and I use it all the time. (12/4/18)

98 ROCK really is a horrible excuse for a rock station. Besides the morning show, there is nothing worth listening to. Amelia is horrible...she sounds so stuff and you can tell she is reading and records her breaks. Kirk and Marianne talk way too much and are not funny at all. What is even on at night? Last time I heard, they were running some syndicated morning show...at night. You are right, WMMR is way better than 98 Rock. I would say 98 Rock is a more polished 93.5 The Beach...which is not a compliment. (12/4/18)

There is an old saying in the Stock Market....."Buy Low.....Sell High". Right now you can really buy Radio Stocks at low prices. Many of these stocks are at an all time LOW! Here are some of the current prices......iHeart 47 cents, Spanish Broadcasting 25 cents, Beasley $4.90, Urban One $2.43, and Salem at $2.78. The question is how long will it take these stocks to recover? (12/4/18)

Tim Cook has famously argued over and over that iPhones do not contain FM chips. If Apple were to buy iHeart, expect those FM-less iPhones to magically get a present under the Christmas tree. Anyone who reads the tech pages knows exactly which Qualcomm and Intel modem chips that Apple uses and almost all of them do have FM reception capability within the chip. Apple’s various hardware and mostly software attempts to hide this fact are well known. The FCC has fiercely arguing against disabling these chips for emergency and safety reasons in disaster situations when radio and TV are out of service. (12/4/18)

Ironically, some of the same opposition to the Sinclair/Tribune deal have immediately come out of the woodwork to oppose the Nexstar/Tribune deal, Common Cause and The American Cable Association. Nexstar has conflicts in 15 markets, about as bad a problem as Sinclair had, minus the politics. Will Nexstar keep both WDVM 25 and WDCW 50? They probably could, and it might help the success of WDVM now. (12/4/18)

Thank you Nielsen for not listing the radio stations that do not subscribe to your service. Everyone should pay for your service! A MONOPLY like you have can force small stations to pay the same rate as the number one station in the market. What does it cost now to subscribe to your service? WTOP can afford to pay. However, the small stations that have less than $600,000 in revenue per year, cannot afford your service. The last I heard, the cost to subscribe to Nielsen in DC was $110,000 per year. (12/3/18)

Is Apple buying iHeart? At 48 cents per share, is it a good buy at that price. iHeart has $12 Billion in Assets and $24 Billion in Debt. I guess that Apple could just assume the debt? (12/3/18)

Re: the KT McFarland post. I've read online whispers insinuating that the FBI Form 302's used to charge Michael Flynn were forged after the genuine forms were made. Note that in 2017, prior to the charges being filed against Gen. Flynn, then-FBI-director James Comey allegedly told a closed-door session of Congress that Flynn's interviewers did not believe he was lying during said interview: www.washingtonexaminer.com... One can imagine that McFarland was later told to recant her initial testimony or face the same fate of Mr. Flynn, which given his extensive legal costs, especially if he was framed to begin with, may not have been an appetizing proposition to her. You gotta love politics!! Sincerely, Mike in Kensington (12/2/18)

“Why does WMAL have paid commentators who comfortably lie”? They don’t, genius. If you knew how to read, you would see the word FORMER commentator KT McFarland in your own post. (12/2/18)

What's the future for radio stocks? About as good as GM stock from the 70's. Radio stations are nothing but properties now. To be bought and sold like the beater house down the block. Then the new owner pumps up the debt through borrowing, cuts the executives huge bonus checks, holds the salaries at 28,500 a years and dump the entity on some one else who can then do it over again. All the while the executives hope the new company retains their services, which they do, because they're all in on it. That's what makes Wall Street nervous. Radio stations are Pet Rock factories in an XBox market. See for yourself. Check out any radio station webpage. They don't work, they are poorly designed, and they haven't been updated techwise since 2008. Most classic rock websites still have the "Babe of the Day" post which is some girl from 1996. Serve me up some more "Hotel California"! The freshest hire in the DC market is basically Chad Dukes and he's like 40 now! The Fan website is such a mess you can't find anything on it that the hosts direct you to. Why not just put a Napster link on it, right next to the MySpace link. That's the state of the industry in DC and many other markets. No vision, no new product, no innovation. Who would invest in that? Finally, in the DC market nobody even wants to compete anymore. Know why WTOP is continually number one? Because they WANT to be number one. Number two is unacceptable in that shop. Everyone else in the market is happy to be in the middle because it means one more quarter that they don't have to work tooooo hard. Pick up the check from the advertisers, pay the mortgage and the car note, and don't rock the boat. Be mediocre, middle of the pack, and keep your head down. That gives you two dollar stocks. (12/2/18)

Re: the lack of chemistry between Nick Smith & Shawn Yancey, I wonder if Nick Smith could be paired w/anyone. I’ve not seen him on the news, but in that Like it or Not show and he’s quite into himself. He talks about how he dates often, has said he thinks he’s a good kisser & just seems to think he’s all that. In general, I think FOX5 is trying really hard to recruit a younger audience by adding more younger people to the anchor desk. Case in point; adding Erin Como & Cori (whatever her last name). Erin can sufficiently do the traffic, but struggles w/reading the teleprompter, looking like a deer in headlights. (12/2/18)

The WBMD comment is arguing over nothing because it doesn’t change the outcome, but the FCC CDBS database does show 2 separate applications for 103.1 and 103.3 under 2 different file numbers that are dismissed for WBMD AM 750. The same FCC document is on BaltoMedia.net also. Ultimately, WTOP’s petition for dismissal was rejected. Whether it's a technicality is rather irrelevant. WTOP lost and the FCC clearly stated that WRNR did it correctly by listing actual listeners that would lose their service within the WBMD 103.3 & 103.1 FM’s service contour. I don’t see why WBMD 750 is doomed though as Family Stations still owns WFSI AM 860 and could use 1 of those towers presumably. However the real question is, how financially solvent or willing is Family Stations to spend any money on WBMD? On their Facebook page, they listed WBMD as AM 1750! There is no mention of it since WBMD went off the air, only that WFSI AM 860 is back on air. So it seems as if they don’t even care, but they did still file an extension of the STA, so they have more time. With the way the FCC works, it could take 2 or more years before the FCC takes any action to revoke the license, even though owning nearby towers literally gives them absolutely no excuse for doing nothing. They’ll have to have another excuse in April, 2019 and I assume show some progress. — BaltoMedia.net (12/2/18)

WUSA has officially been dropped by Dish and is no longer being carried by that satellite provider: “Attention DISH Subscribers: WUSA is currently not available on DISH. That means DISH is taking away your favorite CBS programming, including the SEC College Football Championship game between Georgia and Alabama, NFL football, entertainment programming such as Survivor, NCIS, Madam Secretary, Seal Team, Criminal Minds, and Big Bang Theory, as well as your local news, weather and sports. December starts out in very poor shape for Radio Stocks. iHeart down to just 41 cents per share OTC, Urban One at $2.26 and Salem at $2.83 per share. These are all time low prices for these stocks. Did anyone else notice this morning's Washington Post a piece that mentioned former WMAL paid commentator KT McFarland? It appears KT, by her own admission, lied to the Senate, the media, and the special council about her then boss Michal Flynn's conversation with the Russian ambassador. She claimed, then, Flynn never mentioned removal of sanctions against Russia on the call. After Flynn was indicted for lying to the FBI on that subject, KT went to the FBI and said she was confused and mistaken about her sanctions denial. So, she recanted before she could be charged? Why does WMAL have paid commentators who comfortably lie? (12/1/18)

Even after all these months, Nick Smith and Shawn yancy on the 9 PM Faux News are like oil and water. Guy the puker would be a better fit with Shawn. Nick Smith would be better on the 8 pm news with the female anchor who is a puker like Guy. It would balance the pukers out. (12/1/18)

Does 98 Rock even have real DJs...? I never hear any live turn over from the 98 Rock morning show to Amelia, why is that? I listen to 93.3 WMMR out of Philly...a REAL radio station, and its a world of difference between the two. 98 Rock sounds like a programmed/automated station...no real on air personalities, no real live & local feel. Meanwhile WMMR is really live & local 24/7 365 :-) (12/1/18)
