Looks like WTOP has dropped ABC Radio News at the top of the hour and went back to CBS Radio News. I wonder if enough people complained to WTOP about ABC and when the contract expired they went back to CBS? Or was WTOP able to negotiate a better deal with CBS? Speaking of which... I know that CBS Radio was sold to Entercom a couple of years ago. Who runs CBS Radio News? Is it the last vestige of radio that CBS still operates? Or does Entercom run it and it's just branded as CBS Radio News? Dave in Fredericksburg (12/31/19)

So I’m watching the news on Fox5 & the field reporter is talking about the hiring of Ron Rivera. So at the end, she says as a side note, “ “Rivera is part Puerto Rican, so we see what Martinez did with the Nats and we’ve got the Redskins’ Ramirez & Fox 5, all good. WHAT???!!! Don’t send this woman out to do sports ever again. What does Rivera being part Puerto Rican have to do with ANYTHING? Being Puerto Rican is a plus for winning? And maybe I just don’t know, but do the Redskins have a player named Ramirez? If so, my bad for not knowing & I apologize. (12/31/19)

WRDE has moved to the WBOC tower site on channel 26. The channel 31 transmitter has been retired. We are also on channel 34 in the beach area, north of Long Neck. Over the air the virtual channels are 31.1 (Laurel) 31.4 (Millsboro-Long Neck area) and 31.3 (Laurel on the channel 42 transmitter). In 2020 Draper Holdings will be moving WBOC-LD Channel 42 to Cambridge to operate on channel 22. (12/31/19)

Joe Sitrick, who was a Media Broker with Blackburn Company, died on Christmas Eve at the age of 98. I was privileged to work with him for many years. Joe was considered one of the best radio brokers in the business. There will be a memorial service celebrating Joe's life on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 10AM at the Washington Hebrew Congregation, 3935 Macomb St NW, Washington, DC. Bruce Houston (12/31/19)

The FCC announced that the FRANKEN FM comments will end on 1/22/20 and the reply period will end on 2/6/20. This applies to the 28 Stations operating on Channel 6 LPTV. Will the FCC continue to permit these FM Stations to use their audio Channel 87.7 FM to operate as FM Radio Stations or require them to operate as Televisions Stations as they were licensed. Remember, these Stations were allocated so that Minorities could get into TELEVISION OWNERSHIP. None of these stations are owned by Minorities now! (12/31/19)

Even though the "Imus In the Morning" show did not originate from DC, a lot of broadcasters here have a favorite Don Imus story. Here's mine: I share a name (Alan Peterson) with a West Coast radio consultant and News-Talk Radio trade columnist. Back in the 1990s, this dude PD'd a station that signed on for the Imus show when syndication became available. Meanwhile on the East Coast, I was at Bailey's Crossroads, working as columnist, Tech Editor and Section Editor for Radio World newspaper. I was writing a piece on a now long-forgotten topic, calling some prominent radio managers and talents for their opinion on the topic. One of those calls was to Don Imus at WFAN(AM) in New York. He came on for only a few seconds, tore me so many new assholes that I could use my butt to drain spaghetti, then hung up. WTF, man? Talk about an overreaction to a simple Q&A request! What the hell was all that? It turns out "The Other Al Peterson" out west had critiqued Imus' show and sent him a list of areas that needed improvement ... something you just don't do when dealing with The I-Man. When Imus heard that "Al Peterson" (me) was on hold, he thought it was the California PD that sent him the critique and just went uptown on my ass. I always assumed throughout the years that he didn't remember the incident, much less think he may have torn up the wrong guy, but I'll never know now. Still a great story though. (12/31/19)

I sorta turned up my nose a bit at the FCC petition against WETA, claiming discrimination against women composers. My initial thought was, "some folks just have too much time on their hands, and just aren't happy unless they're making someone else's life miserable." But I decided to do a little investigation. I found a page maintained by ClassicFM.com in the UK, devoted to twenty female composers (www.classicfm.com); that is a tiny percentage compared to male composers, but well represented nevertheless. So the petitioner is, to an extent, correct. However, if it becomes a matter of not enough recordings of these composers to make the programming change worthwhile, here is a suggestion: WETA should think about producing a series of classical concerts in DC of all-women composers and soloists, then press it all to CD and offer as paid downloads. End result, good will to the community, a nod to the composers and the petitioner, new material that WETA can share with classical stations around the US and everyone is happy. (12/30/19)

Dear DCRTV mailbag trolls, In the final days of 2019, while everyone is making resolutions, it's not too late for you to turn it around in 2020. Spend time with your kids. Pick up fly fishing. Get really good at making pie - or like Robb Spewak, fruit cake. Start a garden. Join a gym. Learn to knit. You could be happy. AH FUCK IT! In 2020, keep bringing the DCRTV mailbag troll FUNNY. Right, Don Geronimo? lol (12/30/19)

Layoffs at Entercom? I nominate"BlueShorts" at 1067 the Fan. To hear Chad Dukes tell it, Bluesharts took a month of vacation in December. No better way to draw corporate's attention to an employee who costs too much and delivers too little. 20 paid days? Really? (12/30/19)

Local Spanish language play-by-play for Ravens... www.thenewstribune.com... This is a co-op Baltimore Sun / AP piece apparently... very nice. Ran in the Wash Post electronic edition, etc. El Zol FM carries the Redskins along with AM 1580... TK in Odenton (12/30/19)

Scott Jackson and Fred Smoot are the WORST post Skin's game radio show ever!!!! Anything Smoot does on air is terrible. He should stick to stripper boat trips. How could any station put him on the air except for a one minute in and out? Galdi was so much better at the post game. Jackson has no control. Smoot is not worth listening. Look at the ratings????? With the Skins on board, this is the best they can do????? CK is laughing at JFK! Without Czabe, they are empty with just mumble mouth jocks.... Who is their PD???? Does he drink??? OOBBEE (12/30/19)

I just spent several days in DC to see some of the places I hadn’t visited on my many trips there. One of those places was the legendary Ben’s Chili Bowl on U Street, NW. I was reminded that WUST was named after U Street, then the epicenter of black business. It also occurred to me that for many years WUST was located nearby at 815 V Street, NW in a building that looked like its origin was as a movie theater. Around 1969, when WUST increased its power from 250 to 1,000 watts, it erected its new tower atop the building. But WUST has been gone from there since the early 90’s. In any case, I decided to walk the 5 blocks from Ben’s to find out if the building was still standing, or whether it had been torn down for an apartment building in this much-changed area of town. Not only is the building standing, but the tower is still on top of it. The tower looked well maintained but carried no STL dishes, cell antennas or any other type of antenna. The building had no signage, but a couple of notices taped to the glass front door suggested it’s a night club, which it is. An employee saw me looking and brought out a brochure about upcoming talent at the club, which is called 9:30. He was aware of the building’s history, and I asked him why the tower hadn’t been dismantled. He replied it makes the building look cool at night, and they decorated it to make it look like a Christmas tree. Roddy Freeman (12/30/19)

The Post, which in the dim distant past was considered to be "One of the World's Great Newspapers," but now goes by "Democracy Dies in Darkness," has announced that it is contributing to the darkness by killing off the abbreviated newsstand version of the Sunday "TV Week." Considering how the Post has reduced coverage of suburban local political and education news over the past decade, leaving us in the dark about much of the type of incompetence and corruption the Post once covered with suburban bureaus and investigative reporters, and how the Post's "news" pages seem to have become more a reflection of its editorial opinions than an independent, balanced source of political and social news, it seems likely that the Post's management is using its increasing darkness to promote the death of democracy--thus carrying out its new motto. (12/30/19)

Dave's response: Ten years ago, I could not live without the Post. Today, that's all changed. I get much of my news online. And I can get local news (WTOP, WRC, WTTG, WJLA, WUSA, WMAL, WAMU) and political news from many other sites - all of them free. The Post would be dying in the darkness if it wasn't for Mr. Bezos' funding.....

To the guy wondering about the possibility of WETA going full power on Channel 14, unless something drastic has changed that’s out of the question. Many years ago it was demonstrated that the channel would interfere with hospital operations out in Fairfax. Maybe that has changed. Love to hear an update from someone in the know. -P of the AW (12/30/19)

I thought the same about the 105.7 the Fan but mainly because they have been doing a lot of 3 host shows now that were did just fine with only 2 hosts. If Entercom wanted to buy a DC station say 105.1, all they would really need to do would be flip 107.9 to the Baltimore cluster where it probably belongs much like 99.1 and dump the El Zol format for something else, worst case Alt Rock HFS to start. (12/30/19)

Here's a gem from the FCC applications: A DC resident contested WETA's August license renewal by alleging that the station in her view does not play enough female composers, and therefore must be deliberately discriminating against female composers and not in service of the public interest. Obviously, bringing this to the FCC is meritless and a waste of everyone's time - WETA correctly contends that there just aren't enough well-known female-composed pieces for a mainstream classical station, as a matter of fact, and the FCC has a longstanding policy of not considering the programming a station broadcasts in determining whether it serves the public interest. It threw out the complaint and granted the license renewal last month: fcc.gov Well, on the 23rd she came back and, in the next very logical step, compared it to Nazi censorship of Jewish composers: fcc.gov. My word, people can be crazy sometimes... (12/30/19)

Sad when people like “Fast Jimi” and Fran Lane are let go, while those at 105.7 The Fan remain untouched. If they (Entercom) REALLY want to save money, begin there, Start with Jerry Coleman, who brings nothing to the table other than playing the village idiot. How about Vinny Cerrato. His yelling, not talking, for 4 hours is guaranteed headache time. And the constant “when I was with….” They could let Sapienza go too. I still don’t know what the hell he does. The station is stale, stagnant, and unlistenable. What was the last significant talent change…..when they let Steve Davis go ? That was 3+ years ago. Sure they get ratings, but it’s the only game in town (other than Nestor and ‘repeat radio’….is he still around ?). I stopped listening to them when they put Coleman on w/Ed and Rob. It came through rather apparent that Ed wasn’t too thrilled. I tune in from time to time just to see if anything has changed. It hasn’t. Same Old, same old. Nothing significant new or frsh. (12/29/19) Big news (smirk, smirk). Entercom finally activated RDS on 99.1 WDCH.. It now displays "Bloombrg" on my car radio. Gosh, just think if they had to launch HD on that channel? (12/29/19)

I have a prediction for 2020 and beyond. If you are involved in the technical side of the industry, you may have followed the MA3 all digital testing of Hubbards 820 in Frederick. The results have been better than expected in that the range of the signal is greater than it has been when analog. The quality has been described as being as good as the best FM HD out there. Power line noise is not much of an issue nor is lightning when in the local area. I suspect they will be working to further reduce impulse noise. Metadata is displayed, and Imbiquity has found a way to multicast all within the channel spectrum, which is an added plus. (Gone is the sideband noise) I have a feeling that radio groups will look at this as a viable way to generate revenue in the medium wave band, and will begin searching for low preforming AM facilities and make the change gradually assuming the commission allows migration to the new MA3 full digital standard which I am guessing they will, on a voluntary basis. Should this happen, do not be surprised to see the value of AM properties rise. If you have a HD radio, check out the quality of WWFD 820, this is not your fathers AM anymore, and it is no longer amplitude modulation! Compelling programming will be one secret to success. Respectfully, Tom Conroy (12/29/19)

First off, thank you for the kind words as we wrap up 2019. As broadcasters, we have so much in common and some of us are here on DCRTV to offer help and encouragement, and to learn from other professionals in the industry by sharing thoughts and ideas. I will say one thing, time goes VERY quickly, friends come and go with old age. We cannot change that! By way way, might the"Real Aahh" be making a comeback? I ask because I cannot think of a negative word I have ever had for anyone in radio, no burning bridges. That is what will ban you from any job in the market. Part timers, full timers, we were all part of a great family and will always remember each of them. Someone will probably blast me for being so positive, but regardless I am VERY grateful for years in Baltimore radio and beyond (Philadelphia and Chicago). Yes, all part time except for nine years doing afternoons near Roanoke after my Army retirement raising my son away from here. If someone is negative that's ok too, we are all different. Happy New Year to you! A flash from the past, this is current shot of Scott Brenner, formerly of Key Broadcasting, way different and totally out of radio engineering! What a life! Tom Conroy (12/29/19)

Welcome Ivy Savoy-Smith to DC. She becomes the new Entercom Market Manager for DC. She will oversee WPGC, WJFK, WIAD, WLZL, WDCH and WJFK-AM. Entercom should buy WAVA-FM 105.1 and dump WLZL. WLZL is really a Baltimore Station and does a poor job with the Spanish Format. (12/29/19)

I have a question that I’ve been wondering about that’s never been discussed much here, nor have I found the answer online or at the FCC yet. Since WETA TV was allocated channel 14 originally, that makes channel 14 RF an allocation for a DC full power TV station. Yet it’s currently being used by an LPTV, WWTD-LD. But that TV station is unprotected in the repack, and was originally supposed to be bumped or go off the air by 2021. What happens if someone wants to build a full power TV station on channel 14? I assume channel 14 is still in the TV Table of Allocations for full power TV stations allocated to DC right? Is that right or has the allocation been permanently taken away at the end of the repack as it was originally planned? Will WWTD-LD get to keep channel 14 at low power even though there is no channel 14 anywhere near DC or Baltimore anymore? (12/29/19)

Some of you won’t get this, but us old mailbaggers will. Looks like Tom Conroy has become the “PLB/”Davy Jones” whipping boy at DCRTV. Lighten up. Tom’s a class guy. (12/28/19)

The radio stocks that we have been following are not doing well at the end of this year. However, the stock market is at an all time high! Entercom $4.77, Urban One $2.01 and Salem $1.44. All of these companies have too much debt. (12/28/19)

Hey Dave, Happy New Year to you. You may already know this but longtime News 7 reporter Ed Turney passed away this past Monday. According to Sam Ford of Channel 7, Mr. Turney suffered a stroke this past weekend. What a wonderful reporter he was! Take care and keep up the great work. (12/28/19)

As for the WMAL-AM transmitter site sale helping Cumulus out of bankruptcy...not yet. Sale is in limbo indefinitely. Powerful transmitter site serving no one for years, now. (12/28/19)

Dave, Fair is Fair/equal application of YOUR rules: If you are going to delete someone's post for "disinformation" which I haven't read because you deleted it, then you need to delete this post from yesterday for the same reasons: Tom Conroy is notoriously famous for attempting to hitch his worn-out hay wagon to someone else's classier vehicle...... Here's my post: Calling balls and strikes: Outside the Top 10 major markets, there is not a noticeable difference between 0.1 and 0.4 cume--in the NON major markets these numbers are still considered the basement. 0.4 might be the top of the basement but it is still the basement. These are markets like St. Louis, Portland, Baltimore, Tampa Saint Pete and so on. In Los Angeles a 1.0 is considered much stronger than a 1.0 in a Pittsburgh or a Baltimore. Reading these posts when people viciously attack someone's persona instead of the issue at hand then you know the attacker is feeling threatened by facts. When bullies are logically backed into a corner, they viciously attack the messenger (Tom Conroy in this case) on a vindictive, personal level, and ignore the issues of discussion. This is the nature of bullying among children and adults who don't grow up and/or have anger issues. Moving on, Diane Lyn chose to leave her job, obviously disrupting WLIF's time line, whatever that time line was. Whether she would have been a permanent fixture in their master time line, nobody knows. The only ones with that knowledge would probably be the highest tier of the national Corporate Management office. At least she has a position she wants. With today's budget cuts at companies that own more than one station in a non-major market, many people in different positions (marketing, air talent, production, sales, etc) lose their jobs to unfair budget cuts, with the higher paying positions reserved for major market stations. It is no wonder that some professionals choose to work at independently owned stations. (12/28/19)

Time to go to the tote boards - For December 2019, Q1370 and their Harford County 99.1 translator has a 0.3 rating share and 32,500 cume listeners. WHGM on a low-power AM and 3 translators (2 in Harford County and 1 in Cecil County) has a 0.0 and a non-existent listener cume. Analysis: No share and no cume for WHGM can only mean one thing…“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today…” (12/28/19)

Salem is trying to reduce their debt. Their stock is at an all time low of $1.44 per share. Perhaps they should sell WAVA - FM. 105.1 FM? (12/28/19)

RE:..."Tom Conroy is correct about his post. The two responses to Tom Conroy are nasty and uncalled for. You can disagree while showing respect for a different opinion. Tom Conroy must have hit a nerve of truth if you are adding swear words to your post. According to November, 2019 radio ratings WQLL is at 0.1, tied for last place with WLVW , WJZ, WMAL (DC) and WEAA. Even WDCH is beating them. If sales is local as the poster claims then there is no difference about selling a WHGM, WTTR, WQLL and WEAA. (12/26/19) Tom Conroy is notoriously famous for attempting to hitch his worn-out hay wagon to someone else's classier vehicle. If someone he worked with gets a mention, he's there like an uninvited guest crashing the party just to grab some of the spotlight. Search this mailbag for the many examples over the many years. The only nerve hit is the one that's tired of his grandstanding. Last thing, the ratings came out Thursday,12/26/2019. Q1370 improved to a .3. BTW - WEAA-FM had 1.2 in November...not a 0.1. Time for new bifocals, Mrs. Conroy. More to come and you know it will. (12/27/19)

Cumulus sold off two of their best stations in order to pay down their debt......WRQX and WPLJ. They also sold off their WMAL 630 AM Tower site in Bethesda and are now diplexing with another station in Gaithersburg, MD. Their signal is terrible now! This helped bring them out of Bankruptcy. (12/27/19)

The FCC will decide in their January, 2020 Meeting what to do with 87.7 FM. Remember, this is the LPTV Station that was licensed as a Television Station but never operated as a Television Station. They found it was more lucrative to operate as a FM Radio Station using their Audio Channel 87.7 FM. The FCC authorized 26 of these stations to help Minorities get into Television ownership. None of these stations are owned by Minorities now! What does that tell you? (12/27/19)

So, you're saying that with a 50kw signal that blankets the market and an FM translator, QLL only grabs a .3? And someone is picking on WHGM? Someone is bitter. (12/27/19)

BREAKING NEWS: WQLL jumps from 0.1 to 0.3, with a 50kw signal and a "big name" in mornings. Ha, that is a mighty big move there. Maybe those WCBM bonus spots are helping a little. Still doing those buy 1, get 3 free erectile dysfunction spots? (12/27/19)

Someone made a point to bring up focus groups. Part timers likely do not make a blip on the radar screen, I am one of those part timers and agree. However there are still those who have survived because of being reliable, flexible and willing to continue improve their skillset regardless of focus groups. There really is nothing like being hired because of a good reputation, which also applies to full timers, who ARE reviewed by focus groups. There are still a few veteran part time broadcasters out there but certainly less demand with the advent of new technologies. And incidentally, it is ok to look back occasionally to what it was like. We have all worked with some remarkable talent! Hang in there, us old jocks will retire or die off soon enough... Tom Conroy (12/26/19)

RE:..."Comparing WHGM and WTTR's ratings to WQLL (which doesn't have any either, well, if you count a .1), is like comparing tomatoes to an apple. WQLL is a city-grade signal that blankets the population center of Baltimore, while both WTTR and WHGM are fringe signals super-serving the suburban and rural areas. And both WTTR and WHGM should not be overly concerned about ratings since agencies aren't going to buy them anyway. Local is the way to win. Serve the local advertisers. Period. (12/26/19)...Today's Nielsen Ratings 6+ Baltimore monthlies are out. WQLL/Q1370/99.9 FM moves .01 - .03 with a small uptick in cume. As usual, WHGM and their two translators failed to resonate. Must be those "dollar a holler" vape shop/tattoo parlor spots they're running. See you in January. (12/26/19)

I just read that WBOC TV has a job opening for an engineer/consultant to guide them through the switch to ATSC 3.0 Next Gen TV. But I suspect that WBFF Fox 45 will still be the first area station to make the switch, only because they own 2 channels in the market, own Dielectric and an ATSC 3.0 company, and don’t really need any help. — BaltoMedia.net (12/26/19)

Merry Christmas Dave and fellow mailbaggers. I'm taking a few days away from the studio, but I haven't put aside the mic for the holidays. My wife photographed me talking to a dude in Northern Belgium via amateur radio on Tuesday from a rented beach house in North Carolina. It only took 80 watts to reach this guy, 3,800 miles away. Happy holidays to everyone, and celebrate them any way you want to. -AP In DC (12/25/19)

Real good to hear that Diane Lyn landed on her feet, Sean is smart bringing in some more well known local names to Q1370. Ultimately lot’s of promotion will be needed to help. Diane, we both go back quite a few years in Baltimore radio! Forever Media took us part timers off the air on weekends, now tracked by the full time staff. I was fortunate to have a technical background thanks to the mentoring by engineers like Mike Fast, JR Richardson, and even Scott Brenner. That background allowed me to stay with them on call for air work at WXCY and yet take on some engineering At 103.7 and at our Wilmington facilities, working for our Chief Engineer, Dana Puepolo. Yes, this is a fine way to to eventually wrap up a 48 year career! If you are a young broadcaster, learn as much as you can, including the engineering side. There is a real need to have new engineers to replace the old veteran ones if you are willing to learn both the RF and IT sides. It is challenging and never boring! Join the SBE too, I am sure you would be welcome. More young ladies are realizing this can be an interesting career too! Finally I wish Fran and Jimmy the best too, I remember Fran when she was about 17 at the old WBMD, she never failed to amaze me! Where have all the years gone? Merry Christmas, Tom Conroy (12/25/19)

[RE: Jimi Roberts...it would be cool to hear "Fast Jimi" would land at WHGM. Afterall, it's a more fun listen than WQLL or WTTR....] Can't be that much fun. Checked Nielsen. No ratings...period. (12/24/10)

In response to a recent Mailbag post, I wanted to set the record straight. I was not terminated or "pushed out" of Today's 101.9 WLIF. I am sad for my former coworkers Fran and Jimi, they definitely got blindsided. I left on my own in July. It was my decision to leave. Eight months prior (Oct 2018) to my departure from WLIF, I started talking to my future employer WQLL Q1370. WQLL is rebuilding their station. They gave me an amazing offer by late spring and I accepted! When I resigned, local management at WLIF asked me to stay on Today's 101.9 for revenue purposes in July. I was with WLIF for 20 years. It was a hard decision to make. My show was highly rated #1 or #2, in any given ratings book. CBS was no longer a radio company in 2017. I wanted to make a change. My new show 10a-2p begins January 6th on Q1370 AM or 99.9 FM in Harford County, Online and the app too Q1370. Music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. I can't wait to start working with my dear friend Ken Merson (6a-10a) again! This will be fun, local radio. Thank you Dave for your help! Happy Holidays!!! Diane Lyn (12/24/19)

FCC News.....A comment period has begun on the future of 87.7 FM Audio Services. Will it be deleted? (12/23/19)

Find it interesting that on more than one occasion, the early morning weather guy on Fox 5, Mike Thomas, is delegated to do both weather & traffic in Erin Como’s absence. Well, Erin’s on the anchor desk this morning & Mike is again doing both weather & traffic. Guess it would be too much trouble for Erin to get up from the anchor desk & do HER job as traffic reporter. Or why can’t she read the traffic report from the anchor desk. I just don’t see her doing traffic too much longer. Yes she’s been promoted to weekend morning anchor, but I predict her being a permanent early morning anchor in the next few months. Either adding to that broadcast or replacing one of the current anchors. (12/23/19)

These are the facts: Longtime Baltimore Radio favorite Diane Lyn chose to exit Today's 101.9/WLIF. She was neither pushed out nor terminated. Man, when conservatives talk about public radio, they say the dumbest things ("Your Tax Dollars at Work..."). First of all, it wasn't "The Liberals" who agreed to the new funding level, it was both the Dem-led House and the GOP-led Senate who signed off. Second, it was just the first increase in CPR funding in a decade and is projected to add less than a nickel to the average taxpayer bill. As for your idea to spend the money on "new roads and getting homeless people off the streets," that amount would pay for just two or possibly three highway interchanges, and since conservatives regularly kill programs for homeless and the poor....what's your point? Hey Dave, we were given another dangerous result in the WMAL-Russia Propaganda machination yesterday on Capitol Hill. First, WMAL has been running promos with the voice of the dumbest man on Capitol Hill, Louie Gohmert. (The guy who called Sean Hannity a ”genius” ). The promos were cut from a Gohmert tirade on the house floor, and has Gohmert saying “As Chris Plante says, if it weren’t for double standards, Democrats would have no standards at all.” So we have a real connection here, and Gohmert gets some, if not all, his information from WMAL. Concerning? Yes, but it gets worse. Yesterday, on the House floor, Gohmert gave a speech where he referenced Russian propaganda, saying Ukraine interfered in the 2016 election. This point has been hammered into WMAL listeners by Chris [Russian] Plante and Larry O’Commie, I mean O’Conner, for over a year, even though this piece of fake news came directly from Russia, (like the Seth Rich story, and the DNC server hack by Ukrainians story, both disseminated by Chris[ Russian] Plante and Larry O’Commie). Remember, our intel sources have called the claim of Ukrainian interference “bunk and dangerous.” Why is WMAL, Where Moscow Comes to Talk, promoting itself by using a blurb from a known and proven Russian propagandist? I read that (Fast) Jimi Roberts got caught in a budget cut at WLIF. (Entercom is cutting everywhere.) When I lived in New York in the 80’s, WPLJ-FM had slowly segued from AOR to Top 40. When they had finally eliminated the AOR product, I didn’t think their jocks, a combination of the former AOR talents and some new ones, fit the new format or the new Power 95 positioning. When Fast Jimi Roberts arrived several months later, there was no doubt they had hired someone who fit perfectly on a state-of-the-art CHR station. He sounded great from day one and eventually moved from weekends to afternoon drive. He remained the best that station had through my time in New York. I’ve heard him doing several formats in Baltimore, and he was able to tailor his delivery to each. I want to congratulate him on a 45-year career on leading stations, a very difficult accomplishment in today’s radio industry. Roddy Freeman (12/12/19)

Who the hell would agree that 6 MHz of spectrum should be wasted on a single radio station in every non-channel 6 TV market? THIS NOTION IS CLEAR MADNESS, especially with the repack and ATSC 3.0 need for more spectrum. If you leave the analog channel 6’s, you MUST open up channel 6 to FM radio and deal with the REAL TV channel 6 implications. Or better yet, make channel 6 be an ATSC 1.0 sunset channel in every market to aid the switch to Next Gen TV. There are so many better ideas for the use of the peoples’ spectrum than eternal Franken FMs wasting valuable public space. They’re basically squatting and daring the FCC to make theme move. They made representations to the FCC and NEVER operated them as Television Stations. The FCC does not follow up after the license is awarded to see if the promises were fulfilled. All of these owners found a loophole in the FCC Rules and operated them as FM Radio Stations on their Audio Frequency 87.7 FM. I have filed multiple complaints against BOTH channel 6’s in both DC (WDCN) and on Delmarva (WOWZ) for the annoying over-modulation of volume and sound that is clearly against several FCC policies and never once got a response on even the poor operation as FM stations let alone as TV stations and the fact that they’re clearing operating at a higher power than licensed not matching their initial permitted contours. They just don’t fucking care due to whatever influence peddling has already occurred from K Street. This is one instance where I’d approve of Trump stepping in and saying deport those freaking FAKE TV ILLEGAL ALIENS from the FM Dial! The other LPTV stations not on channel 6 should band together and sue both the FCC and these stations in class action for “LACK OF CANDOR” in the application and usage of FCC regulations. Why should a single FM station be allowed to control 6Mhz of valuable land for just an accidental purpose that serves the few vs. the many? A whole new FM BAND, all DIGITAL could be created from just these SQUATTERS without any legal rights with many new stations and they could also have minority ownership preferences for applications. This FCC DEFECT only serves the rich in a very despicable way. Who’s being paid off here? Someone is in the government. :( (12/9/19)

Re:Al in Springfield. First of all, thank you for the kind words. I was reading articles about WWFD and if I understood correctly, vehicle and portable HD radios are capable of receiving this all digital signal. Sangean builds a few HD models, as do others. Keep in mind however that portable radios today do not have the receive sensitivity, so you would pretty much need to be in an area where the signal is robust. So your search for HD radio, most will be hd on both bands, just check the specs. There are articles on the web regarding the 820 testing. It appears that the digital signal is fairly impressive compared to that of analog. Impulse noise can still be a problem at times, but not too bad. Good luck, check Best Buys for HD too. Reply to Tom Conroy: Tom, I have always appreciated your rational and factual contributions to the Mailbag, and your Dec 5 posting has a good blend of information and commentary to convey your points. But doing a basic Google / Duckduck / Bing search for "digital AM receivers" brings up a bunch of links not worth ougatz. Most are links to radios with digital tuning or receivers with MicroSD card recorders; nothing for receivers that can actually receive a digital AM signal. Since you've taken the point on this topic, can you suggest or recommend any actual brands and models (car or personal) suitable for proper reception? Or perhaps a way of decoding a digital signal using a common SDR-type computer radio? The Mueller report clearly stated Paul Manafort signed a contract with Oligarchs tied to the Kremlin to boost Putin’s image in the US media. Right after this contract was signed, Chris Plante and Rush Limbo both started talking about what a real ”leader” Putin is, and how Obama can learn from Putin’s leadership skills. Our friend over at The Hill, and WMAL frequent guest, the traitor Jon Solomon, also penned a similar piece praising Putin’s leadership skills. How much Russian money did WMAL get from this deal to smear the then current president, Bill Hess? On another note, Bill, Seth Rich. Did you know the story disseminated by Chris Plante, Larry O’Connor, Rush, and Mark Levin was fabricated by Russians? Of course you did. Now that we know your team knowingly participates in schemes, aided by Russians, to disrupt the upcoming election, and to obstruct justice, isn’t time the whole truth comes out about WMAL’s long history of planned lying and deceiving of the American people for political gain? In the 4+ hours I've had WASH on in my car this month I think I have heard the artist identified a total 3 times. I don't have a fancy radio that displays the artist and title. Someone recently told me that Siri can help on this quest. So I have taken to using her, but that's a bit of a challenge on 95. Is not identifying the artist standard procedure for WASH during the other 11 months of the year? Thanks. Tom in Wheaton (12/5/19)

I hate to disappoint our resident crusader against the use of Channel six for radio but that FCC review seems to be aimed at possibly extending the use of the frequency in this manner. if the FCC did nothing the issue would go away when all LPTV stations go digital but the FCC is responding to comments that want to allow continued analog use. But I am sure we have not seen the last of our Channel6 Crusader. (12/5/19)

Attention Tom Conroy WXCY: I purchased a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage last year. It has HD radio in it. Trouble is, in my town their are no HD signals to tune in. As far as people talking about it? I hear zilch! The only way that medium is gonna catch on is for the FCC to allow AM broadcasters to keep their AM signals on (if that is technically feasible) and simulcast on the HD channel. Remember when stations use to simulcast AM programming on FM? I remember when one station about 40 miles from me added an FM signal they actually gave away car FM converters just so people could hear them. Some kind of HD radio giveway will be necessary even today "to get the word" out. If not HD just isn't gonna happen. Sorry 'bud! (12/5/19)

RE: WHGM's sale. The sale was to get the assets out of Jeff Davis's company, Imperial Broadcasting. Jeff abandoned the station and left town in March, owing over a half-million dollars in loans. Now, with the new company, the option to buy can move forward with the current LMA. (12/5/19)

WHGM and its two co-owned translators were sold to Andrulonis Media for ten (10) dollars. The buyer owns several country-formatted stations plus a couple of classic hits, largely in NC and SC. Jeff Davis bought the three stations for just over $400k just two years ago... fcc.gov... (12/5/19)

I have been around for awhile and remember broadcasters ways to improve AM quality. There was the Motorola C-Quam stereo system, Kahn tried too. GE and perhaps others developed an AMax certified radio capable of receiving the full spectrum of what was broadcast, much like the older radios already did pre-1970 or so. Later came the hybrid in band HD which has a bad side band artifact. Now the commission has allowed AM broadcasters to go fully digital, which makes current non HD receivers obsolete. That is a bold move, but matched with compelling programming, may stand a better chance of reviving the old medium band over time. The FCC would need to mandate that receivers are in the marketplace, otherwise it is like pissing into the wind. It is a touchy choice for an AM to suddenly turn off their analog signal, hoping the new technology will be in the hands of the consumers. It would require a huge investment by the broadcaster along with having a serious public information program in place, maybe even giveaways of portable full hd radios initially. I have heard 820 in Frederick, comparing it’s quality to satellite radio, which is not perfect, but is a major improvement to the spectrum. It is no longer amplitude modulation which has been around for over one hundred years. Could the commission mandate a complete changeover to full digital, like they did with the ATSC-1 system for television offering incentives to broadcasters? Maybe... That may be the only way to jump start the declining numbers in the medium band we currently know as AM. Your soundoff is welcome! Tom Conroy WXCY (12/5/19)

Dave: You have to love the new Wizards TV guy[replacing Buckhantz] calling Butler, Drew Goodman! Say what? I know it's a slip of the tongue, but, I still think Ted made the right call in making an on-air change. Gotta tell you, NBCSNDCCSN Wash, or whatever they go by, really thinks using very young talent to speak of gambling odds and sports and how team operates, will really get viewers, NOT. Also, it's amazing how much the same Carol Maloney sounds like Sheehan on the radio...um...um...um. I wonder how many friends Pollin has left to keep on the air in DC because 630's talent is just as bad as 980. And, poor Doc, now he's really preaching to the choir because no one's listening to his show and Al just needs to turn his own volume down. (12/5/19)

Anyone know when Bloomberg’s lease of 99.1 runs out? Or when hopefully Entercom take it back from Bloomberg? Absolute waste of a good Maryland FM signal. (12/5/19)

Two Radio stocks seem to have hit bottom and stay flat. Urban One at $2.00 per share and Salem at $1.46 per share. Both companies have very large debt. Why don't they do what iHeart did and just sell their debt? (12/5/19)

The FCC has requested an update on the use of 87.7 LPTV Channel 6 for FM Radio. Remember, when these LPTV stations were granted, it was to provide Minorities an opportunity to get into television ownership. Rather than use the TV channels as they were intended, the new owners of these TV stations found it was much more profitable to operate them as FM stations on their audio channel, 87.7. Most were in major markets and were NEVER operated as TV stations. Soon after these licenses were granted, they were sold at premium prices because of the revenues they generated as FM radio stations on 87.7. (12/5/19)

Anyone know what happened to Fox5’s reporter Nick Smith? He was a field reporter & then was on that Like it or Not show for a minute. Then just disappeared. Don’t see anything online about him leaving or working somewhere else. Also no hints as to what he’s doing on his Twitter account. But hey, there’s been a number of other reporters who have just disappeared from that station w/o notice. (12/4/19)

How much is Bloomberg paying Entercom to lease WDCH 99.1 FM in DC? We know that the Russians are paying Arthur Liu $35,000 per month to lease WZHF 1390 AM for their Russian propaganda and they are paying John Garziglia $30,000 per month to lease his Translator 105.5 FM. (12/3/19)

The FCC is going to permit AM stations to go all digital. How will this help AM Radio? (12/3/19)

Beasley sells two AM stations in south Florida for $7.1 Million. (Parkland, Florida) WSBR and WHSR. The city bought them for the land. The stations will go silent and their towers will be removed. This is going to happen in many markets. The land is worth more than the AM stations! (12/3/19)

News channel 8 down/must be time to renew contract with FIOS! (12/2/19)

I saw a noticeable signal level drop in the three TV stations broadcasting from the Fort Reno tower (7, 9, and 32) starting at 9am today, Monday. You'd have to think it's WETA working on their permanent post-repack facility, which is also licensed to that tower. In their latest progress report they estimated the month of December as the completion date. (12/2/19)

Is CNN going to move their headquarters to Virginia? (12/2/19)

Virginia is now a "Blue State" with just one political party! The liberal Democrats Rule the Commonwealth! The other party was defeated. Northern Virginia Rules! Virginia is following DC with their voting pattern. This seems to be the RULE OF THE PEOPLE. Is that true? (12/1/19)

It appears as if WMDT 47abc has cancelled the Ravens program Ravens Rap from The Green Turtle in Ocean City with Mike Bradley and produced by Ravens24x7/Russell Street Reports Tony Lombardi. I personally liked the show a lot myself, but WMDT appears to have picked up the Ravens own produced shows Ravens Report and Ravens Unscripted to replace it or its been moved somewhere else? I didn’t see it on Facebook either. Anybody know? (12/1/19)
