Lately it seems like there’s quite a bit of tension between anchors on the “morning zoo”, AKA Fox5 Morning news. Have noticed rolling eyes, short sarcastic jabs & more & more time being taken off. As for the latter, that may ge due to summer vacations. But whatever, their interactions are seeming to be more & more forced.

DC Nextgen date changed to August 13 as of today. Approval likely. — BaltoMedia

Sure, I was in DC during Don and Mike's heyday. I dont deny them their popularity. So why are they treated so badly here?

Has Tucker & Caitlin broken up? Noticed she hasn’t been wearing her ring.. -Pam

RE: “I'm sorry, but what is this obsessive fascination with Don and/or Mike”…Obviously the show had a big effect on people when they were on the radio based on several factors. First, if you have followed DCRTV all these years, the show was always a very popular topic on the main page and the mail box. Second, name a radio show based in DC whose hosts made that much money (One lost that much, LOL.) and lasted that long except maybe Jack Diamond, Donnie Simpson, Chris Whore. Finally, name a radio show that originated in DC that was simulcast to so many cities. Their ratings here and outside DC were pretty amazing. Again, I am trying to prove I am not a douche. OOBBEE (More to come on “Mike’s Tom OB is a Douche Show” but this needed to be addressed first.)

"I'm sorry, but what is this obsessive fascination with Don and/or Mike so many years after the show ended?" I know, right? I'm all like "When are people going to stop talking about the Vietnam war and President Kennedy and stuff?" In a world where Bill Cosby is walking free (leaving prison in coincidentally a white SUV) THIS is your concern? Liddy, whose show I enjoyed and with whom I got some airtime, bulked his show out by reading the newspaper aloud. Anyway I've been informed that we don't talk about D** here so what's YOUR obsession? I don't care about ATSC 3.1415 but so what? It's fun to complain, get a clue. What would YOU like other people to talk about? On a bright note, nice to hear that "Coach" Gilgallon is still on the air. Gus SMH

Was fooling around with my internet radio and was surprised to come across the morning show at Classic Rock 102.3 FM in Palm Springs, CA. The DJ was none other than ex-local sportstalker Rich "da Coach" Gilgallon!!. Had no clue da Coach was doing Classic Rock now. Pretty good station too IMHO. Still think Kiley and da Coach was one of the most entertaining DMV sportstalk shows ever, especially compared to the drek on now........

I don’t see any post about it, so here goes. Nextgen TV is coming to DC on July 1 or around then. WHUT has filed an ATSC 3.0 application that is likely to be approved within days. These are the TV stations (see pic). It’s unclear what Sinclair’s WIAV 58, already in ATSC 3.0 will be carrying. WJLA will carry WHUT’s 1.0 signals from now on. — Balto-Media.com

Dave's response: No need for the pic. It's 4, 5, 7, 9, and 32.....

I'm sorry, but what is this obsessive fascination with Don and/or Mike so many years after the show ended? It was *a radio show*, people, not a sinkhole under your house or a smoldering volcano worthy of constant attention. WHY keep it up?? I don't see this kind of lunacy orbiting Gordon Liddy or Ferrall on the Bench. Are you the same fanboys that populate their Wikipedia pages with useless minutia too? Sweet Jesus, let it go already.

Re: loud anchors on Fox5, can we add Marina Marucco (sp) to that list?? As for Tisha Lewis, my theory is that she’s normally a field reporter & constantly competing with the noise of cars, sirens, etc & probably overcompensates vocally when doing a report. But hey, she needs to learn that there’s an inside voice and an outside voice. As for a Marina, I just think she’s naturally loud.

Re; TMOS Ad Loss. Independent DCRTV. As American as mom, apple pie, hot dogs and baseball. Let's raise $750 or more for Dave by the 4th of July. Dave, count me in for half - $375. Mailbaggers, YOU donate the other half. GO! The Real AHHHH Legend.

Dave's response: Thanks! 104 N Green Street #116, Morganton NC 28655 or paypal.me/dcrtv. I want to thank former CBS Radio president Dan Mason for his very generous donation several weeks ago. Nice to see that he still reads DCRTV.....

TMOS 'Best Of' or since they've stopped years ago putting in the time and effort to produce ongoing, original, fresh, and entertaining content, let it be captioned 'Marginal At Best.' OR "Best Would Be A Stretch.' #DCRTVIsTheBEST

Dave's response: O'Meara's crew pulled their yearly ad contract from DCRTV back in late 2020. His annual renewal time would have been next month, July. It was about $750 that I won't get, probably mainly because I allow all this "freedom" here in the Mailbag. Thanks to Patrick M for filling in part of that revenue gap during 2021, but if you'd like to show your support for DCRTV you can send a few bucks to Dave Hughes, 104 N Green Street #116, Morganton NC 28655. Or via PayPal at paypal.me/dcrtv. Thanks! And may DCRTV live long and prosper into its 24th big year.....

From an interesting source today: “I listen to old D&M shows daily and there are many references to Mike with his feet up, showing up minutes before showtime and having nothing to do with show prep other than talking about something that happened in his life (usual a bitch session). He was a great part of the show, don’t get me wrong, but he is the same man today that he was then. His drinking and golfing was a marital issue 20 years ago and his commitment and contributions to the show were limited.”

WBOC-LD is directional because the FCC granted a CP extension for a channel 23 on the shore that will likely never be built. When that expires beginning of next year, WBOC-LD will likely be able to non-directional from the WBOC tower. This is why I believe that WRDE is gong to be on the move as Ocean City is still a weak spot in the overall signal of WRDE NBC Coast TV. The mid-shore is now covered by WBOC-LD, WSJZ-LD will cover all of southern Delaware to Dover quite well, WRUE (RF19 on the WBOC-FM tower) will cover all areas south of Salisbury to Chincoteague and Crisfield. I predict that WRDE-LD will move to the WZBH tower, which is nearly 500 feet, and would nicely fill in the missing areas that WRDE doesn’t quite cover well. I’d sure like to know the back door discussions going on though. Draper is spending a small fortune on this low power NBC TV station. If it were a full power station, they wouldn’t be legally able to own it. But owning 4 LPTVs is nothing to the FCC, so it’s totally legit. How long will it take for them to get rid of WRC and WBAL and WCAU on Delmarva? Trip from Rabbitears disagrees with me, but I think they want to take the Dover market too. The new WSJZ-LD tower they are proposing will cover Dover better than Philly’s WCAU does now. WRDE has no FCC guaranteed protections on network or syndication exclusivity in the market, but they do have a lot of weight to throw around with WBOC CBS 16 and FOX 21, which do have market protections on duplicative programming. Although, I’m baffled how that is possible with Fox21 since it is not broadcast in HD, just 480i. i wish someone would explain that to me.

Before I leave the area, just once I would like to hear Tisha Lewis and Jeanette Reyes REAL voices. Yikes! The whining, the nasal, and loudness!!!!!

WBOC-LD is now operating on physical channel 22, with a directional signal to the west. Telemundo 42.1 and WRDE 31.3 are on this signal. 15Kw at 815 Feet.

/\ June 29 /\

\/ June 28 \/

Nope, WRDE has not moved. It is still on the Ralph’s Hill WBOC tower along with WBOC-LD. Nothing has changed recently but I suspect it might with WBOC buying more radio stations and towers. As for WBAL 11, in Nextgen/3.0, it will stay there for the length of the deal which is 5 years. After that, all of the channels presumably will go back to their own towers in 3.0 only or there’s an extension (likely). At some point, there will be 1 or 2 1.0 Lighthouse signals that have just the main channels of each station. it’s not surprising that WBAL has a better signal on RF25, than on RF12. it just shows that UHF is superior to VHF in digital. However, ATSC 3.0 offers some help to VHF stations, but we won’t see that until one of the stations is broadcasting from their VHF channel in ATSC 3.0. Expect the entire transition to take likely 10 years before you are forced to buy a new TV. We are at the very beginning. There aren’t even cheap adapters at Best Buy yet.

Hi Dave, WRVA in Richmond has dropped its gardening show. The Richmond Times Dispatch (richmond.com) headline is "After a three-decade run, Adre Viette's 'In the Garden' radio show dropped by WRVA". Thanks.

Haven't been a huge fan of WTEM/The Fan format changes, although Reese Waters is staring to grow on me. However, best news I heard today is that WTEM is now available on 106.7 HD2. It works!! Sounds much better although it does cutout now and then Sorry if I am late to the party. OldGee

NEWS! From radioinsight.com: After selling Rock “93.5 The Beach” WZBH Millsboro DE and Classic Rock “Big 107.7” WGBG-FM Fruitland MD to Draper Holdings’ WBOC Inc. for $2.2 million last week, Adams Radio Group continues to divest its Salisbury/Ocean City MD properties. Mark Guiliani’s DataTech Digital LLC will acquire Country “US 98.5” WUSX Seaford DE for $300,000. Guiliani is Executive Vice President of Resort Broadcasting, the owner of Conservative Talk 92.7 WGMD Lewes DE. The deal also includes an option for Guiliani to acquire the real estate associated with the station within 18 months of closing for an additional $200,000. Adams still has CHR “OC 104” 103.9 WOCQ Berlin MD and Oldies “Kool Oldies 104.3/105.1” W282AW Salisbury/W286BB Ocean Pines fed via WOCQ-HD2 to divest.

I hate to say "I told you so" but... oh who am I kidding? It's interesting to see how since Rob got a couple of my posts pulled and the show stopped advertising here the TMOS dislikers have come out of the electronic woodwork. If TMOS were a radio show, which it's not, and I were a radio exec rather than a mere consumer (I'm so ashamed!) here's what I would suggest: Cut around the mouth, peel the skin off. Wash off the jelly with salt. Then, remove the eyes, gut the show without puncturing the ovaries or liver, the poisons within which would render the whole show deadly. Fillet the show and chop off the head into three pieces to stew later. Rob is winning like Charlie Sheen. Memo to O5car: even Teddy Kennedy and Air Florida didn't burn the bridge. My advice to you Sir is keep posting on social media. What could possibly go wrong? Gus hungry for fugu

So, Mike O’Meara, on his last Bonus Show, that I USED to gladly pay for from the beginning of TMOS, personally called me “A Douche”. I prefer to take the high road in such things especially when people hide behind a mike with people like Bobby Spewack backing them up. It stemmed from something I posted in a fan club pointing out how silly it was for Bobby to call out Drab at a live show as well as making fun of Mac and Pony in a “mean, non-funny way” about their lives. I could call out bobby’s awful life here now but I would be a douche. (Later maybe?) Like I said, I could act like a douche and respond to Mike for using internet muscles like Frank from Austin. Frank is Mike’s new bouncer on line. (More on Frank the ex-semen later, maybe?). I could go on and on about what a loser in life Mike would be if it was not for Don Geronimo. But, that would make me a douche, right? I mean Mike was a hotel DJ at Raffles 2 and a DJ/PD at some REALY small stations before Don, Right? And, after, didn’t Mike fail on the radio, not once, but twice, without Don? To bring these things up though, I would be a douche. You can bring up the TMOS podcast as a success but take out Oscar and where is TMOS? Oscar took over for Don in making Mike’s career. Take away people who were D&M listeners and what the TMOS listener base is for free and bonus? What cities do they do well in? Not one where Don was not syndicated. (I would gladly pay a survey company out of my own pocket to back up what I just wrote, but would I be a douche?) In general, I would say Don/Oscar made Mike’s career if I was a douche. I would also talk about how numbers are going down as “show prep” has become doctors’ visits if I was a douche. A real douche could list the tens/hundreds of times Mike has preached to listeners one way and then acted as if he WAS a douche in doing the opposite. A douche would also point out to advertisers how old the average listener is now (and dying, literally) and how few new listeners, if any, have been picked up in the last five years. Aside from describing a life that depended on Don Geronimo and Oscar Santana (Ie, how much Don did before/after/during D&M that proves his supremacy in the partnership or how Oscar, at Applebee’s, taught mike the word P-O-D-C-C-A-S-T while Bobby drew with the kids crayons they hand out), I could bring up Mike’s other life’s failures if I was a douche. A douche would point out a failed restaurant in Manassas, VA where you can sell used tire sandwiches and succeed if you are not too drunk. Another douche would point out two failed marriages and a third to a gold digger (More here if you look at the circumstances – It really is a gold digger situation once properly explained.) with a move to a retirement community in FLA to live with people 20 years older. A concerned douche would worry about future college costs based on past delinquencies. But, I don’t want to be that guy. I will let Mike call me names and I will turn the other cheek. In the coming weeks if Dave will let me, I would love to post how the quality of TMOS lately as well as that one bonus show costs TMOS money and listeners. I have many screen caps to post. (We could also post pics of Mike’s meet and greet in Spokane last week at the whale watcher event.) I really need to explain to Frank and Bobby why I am not a douche too soon. OOBBEE (PS – Bobby, that FB name is me. Oscar knows it and I don’t know why he did not tell you during taping.) OOBBEE

Dave: Wrapping up my few weeks here in the outer banks and finally home this week and was listening to DMV weather yesterday on the radio. What kind of talent does 103.5 have now. Clearly, there's no quality control because Lauren Rickets can't take a breath and just tell us when it's going to be sunny out, it's all about dumb temps. However, the best line was yesterday when Somara said the heat is heating...really, couldn't tell...give me a break! And, I'd pay a dollar for Amelia to stop singing and changing to a deeper voice when she obviously tapes her reports during the evening, yes, going back to my college radio days...I can tell when someone's on tape. They should only have people like Matt and that AM guy Chuck on their station and that's it.

With this ATSC 3.0 will WBAL stay where it is or is this just temporary? In Easton I have always had trouble picking up VHF WBAL (and WJZ) reliably but now I can pick it up without issue. And bonus, I now get NBC WRDE on 31.3, I guess they finally moved WBOC-LD to a different tower. Combined with WRC I now get 3 NBC stations.

Yeah, a Conservative radio station is just like a Progressive radio station if managed by the same person if you are liberal and a moron.

NEWS! From www.cordcuttersnews.com: ATSC 3.0 is now live in Baltimore, MD with six stations now broadcasting with the NextGen TV transmissions standard. The stations in Baltimore are WMAR-TV (ABC), WBAL-TV (NBC), WBFF (FOX), WNUV (CW), and WMPT and WMPB (Maryland Public Television) The participating stations have cooperated to ensure that current programming remains available to all viewers, regardless of whether their television service is provided over-the air or by a cable or satellite company. Antenna viewers can simply rescan their TV sets to ensure full service. Dan Joerres, President and General Manager of Hearst Television station WBAL-TV, said, “WBAL-TV is thrilled to be able to help the rollout of NEXTGEN TV in the Baltimore designated viewing area. This significant advancement in technology eventually will allow us to continue to keep our viewers safe and informed while also offering crucial community service to the citizens of Baltimore and beyond for generations to come.” NextGen TV will be able to support new features incusing immersive audio and video, broadcasting to mobile devices, personalized viewing tools, and advanced emergency alerts providing rich media instead of simple text messages. Baltimore is the 27th market to introduce ATSC 3.0.

Had an interesting conversation with Trip from Rabbitears. it seems there is no readily available method to determine 1080i vs. 1080p from current equipment, just identifies 1080, so it’s unclear yet if WBAL TV or WMPT are in 1080p or not. Some NBC stations in Nextgen TV are in 1080p, so I hope WBAL TV makes a statement on this with the Olympics coming up as that will showcase some high quality video in HDR and HEVC.

Baltimore has a full power ATSC 3.0 signal on RF25, WNUV. Watching it with my HDHR connect 4k I see 2, 11, 22, 45, and 54 all have their main signal on there. Notably absent is 13; I guess not playing nice gets you left out. As part of the repack, at one point WNUV had a construction permit for a new antenna at the top of the tall tower but they modified things to use the shared antenna that was already up there. Perhaps the ATSC 3.0 trial will convince them to go for the contorted pattern that maximizes their signal with all the co/adj channel constraints and adds vertical polarization.

I correct myself in my last post about WNUV CW Baltimore the UHF channel for MPT that its on now since thier old UHF Ch 25 is being used for Next Gen Tv is CH 21 not 31 like I posted that is for WETA I also noticed that ION WPXW on UHF channel 35 has changed some of thier subchannels They have like 6 and includes LAFF (Night Court,Home Improvement,That 70s Show)strong signal don,t know when they added that but before I was watching it on WMAR Baltimore subchannel which is somewhat stronger at my location in Woodbridge than the old frequency for WNUV.

'Stuttering John' from Howard Stern show loses lawsuit against Sirius XM. John Melendez, who left Stern's radio show in 2004 and became the announcer for NBC's "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," sought unspecified damages last August in accusing Sirius of using his name, persona and voice from old recordings without permission to add listeners and sell advertising.... 15 years and an estimated 13,000 hours on "The Howard Stern Show," Judge, "rebroadcasting of the copyrightable sound recordings themselves, legal" Stern was not a defendant in the case. When contacted, Melendez said "IIIIIII willll appealllll"

"Gus writes the way MC Escher paints" I paint the way Escher wrote, by engraving. Gus making a noise possibly decipherable as "paints my ass"

Yes WNUV CW Baltimore is now on MPT CH 31 but where are the subs now Comet ,Antenna TV ? I live in Woodbridge so its alot stronger of a signal using MPT transmitter than before on CH 25 But did WTTG 5 switch to another transmitter location because its not as strong of a signal past week no matter how I aim my antenna. Is there even any content out now of the resolution of 4K that would make it worth at this time getting a TV with Next Gen TV built in or a converter box?

To the party announcing Salem's flip to WideOrbit automation: Why is it surprising to no one? It surprised me a bit. Doesn't Salem currently use some open-source (free) automation system that costs them practically nothing to run?

When he's not being an abusive taint, Gus writes the way MC Escher paints: in expanded dimensions that nobody can comprehend.

RE: Cumulus monopoly… If a bear shits in the Shenandoah Valley and nobody is there, does anyone notice? I mean, at least on Delmarva, the tourism market accounts for a quarter million people being there on any given summer week or weekend. On Delmarva, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes. WBAL just signed a new deal with Comcast, then announced they were dropping WBAL TV, then backed off. Comcast announced the dropping of all out of market TV stations, but backed off. Draper is clearly involved and I suspect there will be some lawsuits soon. Getting rid of WMAR was easy on the shore, but WBAL and WJZ have significant viewership still, but Draper has invested tons of money in WRDE and still is, so I understand their rationale for protecting their investment. The solution as I see it is simple. If people find WTTG on 905 or WBAL on 911 way up on the dial, they are choosing it OVER WBOC Fox 11/811 or WRDE 9/809 on purpose. The ball is in Draper’s court to gain viewership for their channels. WTTG is already network blacked out (diminishing viewers), but WBAL TV cannot be legally network blacked out as WRDE is a low power TV station with no network or syndication transmission protections. And you can bet NBC O6O’s WRC and WCAU know this too so they’re going to fight to be dropped. And finally, talk about monopolies, is there any TV station in the Shenandoah that is not owned by Gray?

"the guy steering WMAL's programming is the same guy who had the rudder over at Air America: Bill Hess. Wanna explain your rationale now, please?" Not my yob, mang. Next you'll be telling me about Jeff Christie. The March 2009 issue of Vanity Fair had a fine article on what a big fuckup it was. "To this point, Air America has been kept afloat thanks to deep-pocketed liberals willing to accept massive losses because they believe in the company's mission." By your logic Mike O'Meara and his nottobenamed partner had sweet sweet sex with Les Moonves as the New Yorker reported on September 9, 2018. Citations. Educate yourself Sir. Janeane Garofolo (still doable) attributed its failure to people being assholes and not listening. There is half wisdom in those words: the not listening half. Al Franken of course went on to a career as a serial fondler but not a bad Senator. In that respect he's better than fellow fondler Biden. Randi Rhodes famously had her drunken fight falling down incident with her lady date. Ironically she was the best broadcaster on the network, the rest were like bad college radio. Gus noting that Air America is not on the air and Bill Hess like Joe Ardinger is still employed in radio

Surprising exactly no one . . . radioink.com... Salem Flips All Stations to WideOrbit

Dave, saw a post regarding Stacy Rusch that was a bit harsh suggesting a mental/behavioral disorder. Now, I'm not a fan of hers, but that comment was a bit much. Looks like it has since been deleted.

"Air America failed because the stupid idiots (looking at you, Al Franken) running it were stupid idiots". Gus, the guy steering WMAL's programming is the same guy who had the rudder over at Air America: Bill Hess. Wanna explain your rationale now, please?

I saw your comment on the Draper "monopoly" on the Eastern Shore and I wanted to share a funny radio monopoly story. Cumulus virtually has (or had) a monopoly in the New River Valley area (Blacksburg/Christiansburg/Radford) in Virginia. Cumulus owned WPSK, the major country station in the market, and had purchased the country competitor at the time, WRIQ. My friend from high school and former co-worker, Scott Stevens was the operations manager then (he's now at WYYD in Lynchburg) and that he was getting pressure from the Motor Racing Network to broadcast the then Busch Series races on Saturday along with the Cup races on Sunday. WPSK wasn't interested so the MRN rep threatened Scott that they would approach WRIQ and offer them the MRN rights in the market. Scott said to go ahead and call them. The rep calls WRIQ and gets routed right back to Scott. The rep asks "do you own every station in the market"? Scott said, "just about". Keith Thompson, former mediocre radio personality with WCTR and WXCY.

"Oh wait, there are not enough of you idiots to have a progressive channel." Yeah, it was called Air America and it failed because the stupid idiots (looking at you, Al Franken) running it were stupid idiots. Turns out "stupid idiots" is not a good recipe for success. Gus

Re: the whole PPP thing. In the 80s I read a book about personal finance, Wealth Without Risk by Charles Givens and one of the advices was set up a company and make all your kids employees. My guess is that both Shannon and Facial are employees. Prolly li'l Michael too (and before you get started, he's on the show enough he should have his union card). Luka's probly an employee too. Gus without risk is quite simply the best way to support the show

So, there is a fake news story and Fox News and WMAL are acting as the catalyst pushing the story hard. Fox News and WMAL are presenting known conservative operatives as "concerned parents" who are deeply troubled by a situation that doesn't exist. These concerned parents are mad at the school board, and will yell at them, recall them, and vote them out ( it appears all three). They will take this anger and vote a Republican in as Governor in the fall. This play call has been seen before, Seth Rich, Biden on Ukraine, Hillary's emails, rigged election, Obamagate, stop the steal, etc. People have died or been killed, and a President was impeached twice over these dangerous political stunts. I point the stunt out, name the players, and someone here calls me names? Really? God I miss the days of Lee Atwater. He didn't do anything too complicated, just arranging it to look like sex on a boat, and flat out racism.

What's the fuckin' question you ask? Trevor's axiom. Where was Dave Nuttycombe when all this was happening? How can I get one of those commercial pizzas instead of the real life pizza? Gus I approved this message

I dislike TMOS as much as the next DCRTV reader, but applying for a PPP loan is hardly fraud or news. What IS news is what the amount and number of employees reported reveals. The PPP program allows for firms to apply to cover 2 1/2 months of revenue. Back of the envelope math says that TMOS and Podcast Village earn just over $500K a year in total revenue combined. That's gross revenue - before expenses. If they paid 100% of their revenue out to their 13 employees, that averages out to about $38K in salaries per employee. No wonder they lean so hard on unpaid interns. And again - that's gross revenue. You gotta figure with their Glover Park and Dupont Circle rents, utilities, insurance and other typical company expenses they have to be hemorrhaging cash.

Dave, I figured out the question for “Answer” stations: What is a name for a far right hokey talk outlet that still thinks Trump won the election? All kidding aside, I get the need for Salem to have a more right wing talk outlet given that their Christian talk outlets are all very right leaning. Salem is very much a lot like the radio version of Sinclair where it comes to TV. Dan

For the moron who complains about WMAL here, turn to your progressive station! Oh wait, there are not enough of you idiots to have a progressive channel.

Thursday is RECAN DAY again in Baltimore, this time for WNUV CW 54. Nextgen TV starts on Baltimore’s WNUV 54 starting Thurs,, June 24. At least that’s what the FCC approved yesterday. Hopefully the FCC gave them some advance warning so they’d be ready as they have run advertisements announcing it for Thursday. So Thursday is rescan day to find WNUV 54 either on WMPT or WMPB or its subchannels on WMAR or WBAL. I don’t think too many will have trouble except that they’re mostly in different directions, so may need to move an antenna if you currently have trouble getting one of the MPT stations for The CW. Still not date on DC’s Nexgen, but it’s going to be WHUT. That’s now formally announced. Finally, WTTG switched permanently to River Road. — Balto-Media.com

Dave's response: Rescan day? Holy shit! It'll be like Christmas in June! Soooooo excited.....

Dave, thanks for the tip on WGTK. I have family history with Greenville. Since WMAL is in its death spiral I need another station to listen to. Gus

Dave's response: You've got your own "Answer" there in DC on 570 - am570theanswer.com. Now the only question is what's the fuckin' question?

Hey, Dave, since you are no longer in town, and I believe you probably aren't listening to WMAL on your smart speaker (WMAL- Smart-Speaker, I made a funny), here is an update on what the clowns are attempting to do. Vince and Larry are pushing hard this "Critical Race Theory'," nonsense in an attempt to make it an issue, it is not, and are interviewing "concerned parents from Loudoun County," on why it is on the school curriculum, it is not btw. They are telling us how it is hurting education and making white kids feal bad, or something like that. One "concerned" parent is Patti Menders, a Republican political operative who ran the Campaign of Alycia Andrews, the woman Republican who did not defeat Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton last year. Larry, when interviewing her concernedness, FORGOT to mention she, besides being a concerned parent, works in communications for Republican candidates. Another "concerned white parent from Loudoun County" is Ian Prior, who has made appearances on Vince's show about his concerned whiteness or something. Ian worked for years with Karl Rove, which I guess Vince didn't know because he didn't reference it, Vince only referenced how much Ian is concerned and a parent. Ian is so concerned he recently moved to Loudoun from Alexandria, and is fighting with the school board over this issue, being as concerned as he is (I believe he really still lives in Alexandria). Now that Youngkin is making "Critical Race Theory'" part of his campaign, could it be possible it is a red herring designed by the upper echelons of the conservative society to make Democrats look bad, in state races this year, and WMAL is in on the machination? Oh, and Chris Planter still can't get his facts straight.

Dave's response: Whenever I get in the mood for righty talk comedy, I tune in Greenville SC's 94.5 The Answer, WGTK, a mega-watter from Salem that reaches well into my neighborhood of NC. Otherwise, I am tuned to numerous area lefty NPR outlets, all of which carry numerous cool programs from my beloved WAMU.....

Mr. Roger "Tom" McKinley, former G.M. of WTOP/WASH-FM, has returned to live in his native Philadelphia with his second wife, Nancy. He has been a radio station broker with Media Services Group since 1996 after four years at 'TOP. "I'm not always busy, but I'm always working," he told me a short while ago. He's been my best friend in broadcasting for 25 years. I was honored to fly as a traffic helicopter reporter/pilot on 'TOP in the summer of '95 and on the day of the Million Man March in October of that year. Any stint on 'TOP could readily be considered the pinnacle of any broadcaster's career. That's what Hal Brown, former news and program director told Tom McKinley before Hal passed away. And he was correct....

Now that Draper has purchased 'ZBH and others, Joe "Edwards" Molz, who has been programming the firm's other radio properties since Prettyman sold to Julian "Pete" Booker and Delmarva and Delmarva sold to Draper, will probably be at the wheel for those, too. No problem; Joe is a serious radio programmer. When I worked for him he once said, "I used to work as a consultant; greatest job in the world! Sit around all day and shoot the breeze about radio." I've been on the air since '72 and I've never met anybody who lives, eats and breathes programming like he does.

That's nice of O'meara to stick it to the American taxpayers..

NEWS! From radioinsight.com: Adams Radio Group has sold Rock “93.5 The Beach” WZBH Millsboro DE and Classic Rock “Big 107.7” WGBG-FM Fruitland MD to Draper Holdings’ WBOC Inc. for $2.2 million. The deal will give WBOC Inc. four FMs attributable to the Salisbury/Ocean City market as the company already owns Classic Country 100.9 WAAI Hurlock and AC 102.5 WBOC-FM Princess Anne. The company also owns three other stations that serve areas adjacent to the market: “Sports Radio 1240” WCEM Cambridge, Country “106.3 Chesapeake Country” WCEM-FM Cambridge, and Classic Hits “107.1 The Duck” WTDK Federalsburg MD. The company also owns the local CBS, FOX, NBC and Telemundo affiliates in the Salisbury/Ocean City market. Adams will currently retain Country “US 98.5” WUSX Seaford DE, CHR “OC 104” 103.9 WOCQ Berlin MD and Oldies “Kool Oldies 104.3/105.1” W282AW Salisbury/W286BB Ocean Pines fed via WOCQ-HD2, but we’re told sales of them are imminent.

Dave's response: Wow. If you live near Salisbury you're really getting "Drapered." Seven radio stations and four TV stations all owned by one company in one small market. Is the word "monopoly" in the FCC's vocabulary?

WTOP is not paying that much above the $36,000. Based on my experience, it would pay $45,000 unless there is something special about the reporter. If there is a decent resume with some notable experience, perhaps $45,000 to $55,000 but probably on the lower end. If it's a top notch reporter with big time experience in Los Angeles or New York and WTOP is competing with another station for the reporter, then it's $75,000 to $85,000. But that's a very special hire. Run of the mill reporter, probably in the mid 40s at WTOP. If you can get to a DC TV station, much much much better. Easily $85,000-$90,000, and even more if the reporter has an impressive resume coming into the job.

From Inside Radio: Audacy expands its “BetQL Network,” flipping seven stations to the sports betting format – WJZ Baltimore, WXYT Detroit, KIKK Houston, KWOD Kansas City, KXST Las Vegas, WWWL New Orleans and WJFK Washington, DC. Additionally, “BetQL Network” programming will also be heard in various times on WQAM Miami, WRNL-AM/FM Richmond and WTEM Washington D.C.

Dave's response: Inside Radio reports that both the WJZ and WJFK outlets that will be flipped are the stations' AM outlets on 1300 and 1580. Nobody listens to them anyway.....

MICHAEL S. O'MEARA INC RECEIVES BIG PPP FUNDS. GOES ON VACATION. *Full Disclosure. All public information. On February 25, 2021 Michael S O'Meara Inc, for some reason, still a Laytonsville, MD corporation [also registered as a foreign corp in Florida] received $38,813 from Bank of America in Payroll Protection Program funds claiming 4 employees. Question to the Mailbag: Did anyone even lose WBAL or WRC or WTTG on the eastern shore or any of the channels that Comcast was threatening to remove? I know they took them away for a couple days, but now it’s like it never even happened, all back without explanation.

Interesting how Bloomberg is leasing 99.1 from Audacy. I believe they are in their second 5-year leas. At some point, wouldn't the money equal to the purchase of the station? Why don't they just buy it if this will be a continuing long-term arrangement? Could it be that it is a deal like a leas-to-own? In that case, it makes sense. Similar to WKQX in Chicago; Cumulus leases that station and has for years but has not taken ownership.

WAVA 780 goodbye? They must be having xmitter trouble. A few days ago I noticed a loud buzz on both sidebands, then yesterday from Olney I heard what sounded like WAVA but it was very very weak, like it was coming from 200 miles away. Today the station is nowhere to be found on the freq. Jeff

E-MBA but what am I? So, Oscar Santana-Zeballos thought by just changing the TMOS segment name Audio Vault to the Digital Dumpster that would prevent such media powerhouses as Sony Music Entertainment from CONTINUING [on violated copyright grounds], to now MORE FREQUENTLY, block TMOS shows on YouTube. Short of receiving a 'cease and desist', big lawsuit and permanent ban from YouTube, this growing problem should send any Rob Spewak produced music segment to the dumpster fire and Spewak to the unemployment line - or back to bagging groceries at Wegmans. #SupportDCRTV

Sid & Bernie mistakenly reported that PeeWee Herman is dead today. You listeners will see what the TMOS braintrust does with the "news". Gus but what am I?

Recent posts from another FB page regarding the TMOS FB Official Fan page. All are driven by Oscar and some zealot listeners that get their rocks off screwing other listeners. My guess is Mike does not like that people are spending less money on bonus shows and not listening daily anymore. Way to go Mr. MBA!: (1) “And I've been blocked from accessing the fan club. Thanks to Trip, I guess I am officially done listening.” (2) “I want to bring Jolene down or at least ruin her day in the worst way. I’m trying to take the high road. I’ve reported her for harassment” (3) “Trip has pushed another lifelong listener and longtime financial supporter to move on from TMOS. I wish the show nothing but success.”. (4) “It's ok. If the person who banned me had a set, they would speak up and at least say why. But, cowards hide. They have no guts. And, we know who one of the admins are in the page.” (5) “One Fan Club Admin gets paid by TMOS. Cancel bonus, become a freeloader, contact sponsors and other Podville customers if you want to make an impact.” (6) “Tripp has over 8 FB profiles to harass listeners because FB keeps suspending him. This guy is the face of Mike O’Mera on social networking?” Shit, Oscar wrote this after telling a listener to stop listening (Hand to God) “you, sir, have too much free time on your hands. Engaging with a private fan club of which one of the hosts you hate (ME). Is the mark of the modern-day moron. Take this hate energy and find a none-profit that you can channel that hate energy to serve soup for those that need help”. Again, These are all real quotes on FB from people who listened to TMOS for years the same week Mike was talking about using social networking to increase listeners. And, Oscar Santana really wrote that quote above to a listener. It was not his only request to a listener to stop listening this week. Maybe Mike should have a talk with his business manager??? Maybe the “Lovability” that the club once had when it was run by SDM has been poisoned by Tripp, Jolene, and yes, Oscar’s vitriol due to lack of self-esteem? HEY MIKE THESE PEOPLE COST YOU MONEY! YOU KNOW THEY HAVE NOT MADE YOU ONE DOLLAR IN THE LAST YEAR.

wtop is not paying the simplyhired.com estimate for its reporter opening. Anyone who knows anything about the sagaftra contract knows there is a minimum allowable pay. And I would guess that an experienced reporter would be able to negotiate up from there. Simplyhired.com is not always a reliable source. WTOP takes excellent care of its employees (many have been there for decades) and would not pay a street reporter 24-36k a year.

Wait, what? People pirating TMOS bonus shows? Just another sign of the end times. 170 people times 52 weeks; if ~ $8,000 spread over three people is make or break you've got a problem. That's three trips to The Masters or three Disney cruises that never happened. Might be time to hire an MBA. I've heard a *bonus show* for free (not one penny for tribute, not one mil for a bonus show) and if anything it was worse than the regular show. Catholic school boys coming into puberty the hard way; a cultural breech birth. Still I admire the pluck of Group 170. Here's why MC 38 Pounds and his minion Pony won't crack the case: one person stupidly subscribes to the "bonus" show and posts it to a dropbox where anyone he approves can get it. P.S. Dan Bongino on WMAL is to this listener unlistenable. I suspect that station's days are over. You heard it here first. Gus...

Re WTOP's need for a reporter, Dave said, "You could do better doing Doordash or on YouTube (like me).....". You could also get a haircut and get a local TV gig. The pay may not be an order of magnitude above the radio position, but after three years you'll have a much better-looking demo package and maybe (with the right assigned story) even national exposure. Scoot on over to the WJLA Careers web page and see what they've got.

Does anyone know what happened to Don Geronimo? He has seemingly disappeared from all social media since 2018.

Dave things are tense at TMOS as usual and no Robb so Matt Bluhm filled in as second banana. Mike received a letter in the mail from a bonus show subscriber and listener say he has been giving away the bonus show to 170+ people for free. Mike vows he will find out who it is and asks fans to rat this brave soul out. This is after stating the previous episode that if you did not subscribe to the bonus show you were a “freeloader”. To me that doesn’t seem wise to call the majority of your listeners freeloaders. Of course Oscar piles on but I don’t blame him for trying to keep the geriatric DJ happy and keeping him from derailing the show with his constant rants and complaining. TMOS Freeloader Assoc.

My earliest memory of cable TV (which wouldn't be part of my life until well into the 21st century) was watching Duel with Dennis Weaver on a B&W TV in Ocean City in the early 70s. Remember the movie ads in the WaPo in those days? Saucy times! So I'm not sure if I can't relate or deeply sympathize with the current hullaboo about eastern Maryland. Gus

87.7 FM - Radio Stations May Get Six Month Extension...

Dave, you might have hit the nail on the head on this. Ocean City is historically a vacation spot for Baltimoreans including DC area people as well has have the Delaware beaches. Every different negotiated cable system contract does have such stipulations in the contracts. However many of them have been renegotiated. My thinking is that it’s prime tourist beach season and the timing couldn’t have been worse or caught more attention. WMAR 2 was removed over one winter and no one even noticed. I do think Draper will not give up on this though and will keep pushing. Comcast only really has one piece of leverage over Draper’s WBOC though. And that is that WRDE, being low power TV, has no MUST CARRY protections from the FCC. And few people right now are clamoring to pay to watch their fledgling local news. I would bet that WBAL TV has better news ratings than WRDE, maybe even nearly close to WMDT. I know WJZ used to have better ratings than WMDT back in the day with Jerry Turner. Ever since WBOC got WJZ moved to SD and different obscure channel, that has changed. Now WTTG Fox 5 was really the ONLY DC local news left at the beaches except sporadic WRC 4 coverage, mostly in Delaware or closer to the bay. I remember when Ocean City cable TV was 2 WMAR 4 WRC, 5 WTTG, 6 WBOC, 7 (WJLA then WMDT), 11 WBAL, 13 WJZ. I have to say that I don’t remember WJLA being on OC cable myself, but it seems to me that before WMDT, they were probably there. I also don’t remember WUSA 9 on OC/Worcester cable TV, but I bet they were at one time.

And just like that, Comcast put all of the removed out of market stations back, at least on the Ocean City Worcester County cable TV system. Very curious since the message for the past few days seemed permanent.

Dave's response: Perhaps someone from the local cable franchizing authority politely reminded Comcast that it was in their contract with the county to offer those out-of-market stations. Will Comcast be blacking out the network programming on these restored channels? Hmmm.....

EXCLUSIVE! SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT GOES AFTER PODCAST VILLAGE AND TMOS! Yet another reason why after 23 years and counting, DCRTV deserves your support. Did eMBA Oscar Santana Zeballos miss the course on Crisis Management, AND Copyright Infringement too? ONCE AGAIN, YouTube has pulled an episode of TMOS {{Number 2707}} This time at the demand of SME. "Video Unavailable. This video contains content from SME, who has blocked it on copyright grounds." So, lets get this straight. TMOS is so lazy that they create very little original content but also steal music w/o paying a royalty? Allegedly. #SupportDCRTV

Dave's response: That type of "violation" is very common in the YouTube world when someone posts a video from a location with background music, like a restaurant, a store, or the Vegas Strip. The bots pick up enough audio to identify a specific tune and a copyright "strike" or "claim" is issued.....

No, I really don't listen to TMOS anymore and the time or two I backslid I confessed here, making my dirty clean. I've got my chip and I'm free, brethren and sestren! You might want to look up the meaning of "over the transom". Sure I'm carrying a few extra pounds but I'm by no means "astute". \/ June 15 \/

Personally I feel a lot of stress at TMOS. (I listen to all free and pay bonus too) I definitely get the feel that numbers are down there and things are stressful. I would also say much is self-inflicted in the last few years. I won’t get into specifics in what is heard/insinuated on the show and the rumor mill to make me feel that way. If Chad succeeds in an 80% pay for listen mode on one side (Again, I pay and was a founder) and Mr. Tony succeeds as a totally free mode based on exceptionally high numbers of listeners with advertising (I listen to every show), it puts Mike in the middle. I know the numbers were really high at one point and are still solid. But, my guess is it is static at best. I see the watch numbers falling and active posters on fan pages waning. Interest seems to be falling. Also, look at his listeners in show fan pages. They are not getting younger. Most of the ones that buy just one bonus, and it’s already a low %, will not flip for a Chad format and the advertisers are probably stagnant based on free listeners. All three shows have G&A and OH costs of one kind or another but TMOS has three hosts to feed. Mr. Tony doesn’t need money but others on his show do. Chad does and is working his ass off. I think TMOS is at a cross roads. To put it in perspective: If you have a bake sale that is critical financially every year, every listener is important to survive let alone improve. It really comes down to one person. OOBBEE

Not only WBAL, WJZ, WTTG, WRC and WBFF been removed from Comcast cable on the eastern shore, but also Philly’s WCAU NBC 10, and WTXF Fox 29 even though Fox 21 on the shore does not even transmit in HD over the air! So, remember when you couldn’t get WRDE NBC Coast TV in Rehoboth Dave? Well, you will now in Delaware as the Philly stations are all getting the boot too! Also Dave, Sinclair has little presence on the eastern shore except in the counties in the Baltimore DMA where they are Must-Carry. From a pure money standpoint, I expect most beach hotels, especially Ocean City, to cancel Comcast service as it’s more expensive than other options and the only reason they would have kept Comcast was for tourists from Baltimore and DC or in Delaware from Philly seeing their local news. Now that is no longer possible. So bad for tourism too. As far as I know, Mediacom still carries some of these stations. — Balto-Media.com

Dave's response: New Castle (Wilmington) and Kent (Dover) counties in Delaware are part of the Philly ADI, while Sussex (Rehoboth) is part of the Salisbury ADI. With most commercial broadcast TV stations now charging ever higher retrans rates for carriage, it makes economic sense for Comcast and other cable companies to drop those signals from outside their local markets. When I was living in Rehoboth in 2017, the only out of market broadcast signal carried by Verizon was Baltimore NBCer WBAL because local WRDE was still in set-up mode. I imagine they will soon be dropping WBAL if they haven't already.....

Gus does listen to TMOS. Look at his past posts. Only an astute listener could know some of those things. TMOS is old. Ten years old. For any show, that is long. Analyze the “Talent” and they had a good run. The early group of misfits was fun and different out of Mike’s living room. I think people could relate to this and found it refreshing. They hooked into what was left of D&M/TMOS radio listeners. The road trips and other bits were fresh and new. Then, there was the coup. Just the three were left. Ok; that was kinda different and some fun to begin. Then, two huge changes: Mike moves to FLA and Oscar starts Podcast Village. This was the beginning of the eventual end but it was a good run. It became a show centered on a bitter and grumpy semi-retired DJ living in a retirement community bitching about health, old people, etc. and living in FLA with his third wife and a kid who could be his grandson. His politics became almost socialistic now that he was on the other side of money. Gone was the Country Club, Pub owning, sports car driving DJ that was happy doing voices to entertain for that kind of money. Bitching replaced funny stories about his life. Oscar became obsessed with being a successful businessman for his ego. He works non-stop at the Village which, in changing names, tells you something changed, good or most likely bad, cooperate wise. He won’t even respond to Mike’s texts regarding the show. He squeezes in the show because he needs the money personally or the village did/does. Robb is just the second banana of all radio second bananas. They have been VERY lucky it has lasted this long. Next, let’s discuss the talent that explains this luck.

Well, it’s past June 8 and soon June 24 and the FCC is still working from home and has decided that Baltimore doesn’t need NextGenTV apparently. I cannot see any solution to this standoff without the FCC going back to their offices in DC and fully looking at the WNUV application. Even a child could vet it and approve it. And clearly Sinclair is pissed as shit as this oddity got posted online by the Nextgen TV website. How exactly could this be a clerical error or mistake? www.watchnextgentv.com

Dave's response: The Federal Corrupt Communications Commission is still working from home? Get your damn vaccines and get back to work you lazy bastards. Jeez.....

No explanation why, just a screen telling you that if you want to watch their news, go to the internet from now on. COMCAST SUCKS! I want hearings on COMCAST/NBC antitrust violations. This is different the Hearst out of market carriage agreement as that was settled and WBAL didn’t get dropped months ago. This is likely Draper’s WBOC CBS 16 & now co-owned WRDE NBC Coast TV flexing their now collective muscle. The pisser is that FOX21 isn’t even in 720p over the air but only 480i for NFL games STILL after all these years!

Dave's response: Down here in North Carolina, I'm on the western edge of the Charlotte DMA and get ABC via Cox's WSOC 9 on cable, a good 70 miles away. However, I am actually closer to Asheville, probably about 40 miles away, which features Sinclair's ABC WLOS 13, but that's in the Asheville-Greenville-Spartanburg market, outside my prescribed DMA. Cable systems in my county used to carry WLOS but no longer.....

So here's the play of play with public radio. WRAU 88.3 is gone. Delmarva Public Media, is three stations, WSCL 89.5 (Classical) WSDL 90.7 (BBC and simulcast of WESM) and WESM 91.3 . DPM still airs some NPR on WESM, but that signal doesn't cover the whole peninsula. WSCL is now all classical music and wsdl only airs BBC for news. Which means that you cannot pick up WESM or WDDE up in Dover or live far enough on the westen shore to get WAMU's fringe signal. You are kind of out of luck. WYPR has their WYPO signal in Ocean City, but it doesn't have great reach. DPM cannot just pick back up NPR on WSCL or WSDL because they were losing revenue and dropping NPR was a cost saving measure.

The 80s were fully 40 years ago. Nobody wants to say it out loud, but 80s radio is basically "Music of Your Life" for late Boomers and GenXers. Only the presentation is different and it's not airing on last-gasp AMers.

One interesting thing about WMJF-CD is that even the top of their tower in Towson is nowhere near the tallest building in Towson, so talk about bad luck with lightning. And if you didn’t know better, you’d think it was built by a Radio Shack Kids project kit just before they went out of business. Never fear though. I’m sure the folks in Florida will find out they’re off the air sometime this week.

It's real easy to get burnt out on the limited weekend selection of 80s tunes on both 94.7 and WASH-FM. There are way too many tunes I just bail on when they roll up for yet another play. Well this weekend I was listening to the stream of WMBG, the townie station in Williamsburg Va, and was not at all disappointed - "I Wanna Be a Cowboy", "Oh Mickey", "Electric Blue", "When the Lights Go Down In the City" (technically a 70s tune), "Centerfield" and a bunch of great songs that are generally ignored by the corporate signals. Sure, its unattended satellite time, but its good stuff and I got my 80s fix and then some. Honest to God, I would donate a kidney to go one day WITHOUT hearing "Jack & Diane" or "Purple Rain" on the DC sticks. Til then, you know where to find me on weekends.

Towson MD's low power WMJF-CD (RF23) appears to have been off the air since Wednesday afternoon. It vanished during a time of thunderstorms and heavy rain in Baltimore County (we were watching one of the WMJF subchannels). Only a few days earlier, WMJF began transmitting channel 39.1 (virtual) in 720p according to our two HD receivers' displays. 39.1 carries ION network. Elsewhere, Maryland Public Television WMPT (RF21) from northwest of Annapolis seems to have been off the air since sometime Friday. Rescans at our location about 30 miles north in northcentral Baltimore County yield nothing. Sister station WMPB (RF22) from Owings Mills MD remains on the air. Thanks for DCRTV.

NEWS! Link To Wendy Rieger Story From NBC4... www.nbcwashington.com... Wishing Wendy Well... Many have reached out to ask about a member of the News4 family. It’s been a few weeks since Wendy Rieger has been here with us. About a month ago, she was having headaches and knew something wasn’t right. She sought out the best care, and 10 days ago, Wendy had brain surgery. Wendy joined Jim Handly to talk about how she’s doing and when she noticed something was wrong...

Here is an interview with Wendy Rieger about her surgery: www.nbcwashington.com... Best Wishes for her

Wtop is reporting that Wendy Riegger was on nbc4 this week explaining her recent absence is due to battling a brain tumor. Wishing her a speedy recovery.

Well looks like that's it for WRAU 88.3. As of Friday June 11th, its just static. Wonder when the Christian station comes online?

WMALLogic; if you break into someone's house, you should be shot, if you break into the Capitol attempting to stop a scheduled excersize of peaceful transfer of power, you are a hero, and it was wrong to shoot you. When an embassy in overrun and people die, you blame the Secretary of State, misinforming your listeners she made a "stand down" order, and you talk about it for years. When our own Capitol is forcibly invaded and police are wounded and maimed, you refer to it as a rowdy tour, and move on. A dishonest economist and a failed businessman know more about vaccines than an epidemiologist. I get headaches.

Regarding the prior post, I would take Czaban 100 times out of 100 over the drek that is on the two stations now. Paulson and Roughier are dumbed down to the extreme, not to mention tough to listen to. Paulson's voice is as grating as it gets and his arrogance appears to know no bounds. Roughier is their for supposed comic effect, but he's not funny except for some of his inane and uninformed sports takes. On the minor league station, Chris Russell is a freakin joke. No one, and I mean, NO ONE takes anything the guy says seriously One wonders what the nitwit PD has against Medhurst to pair him with such a loser. All in all, terrible radio. Czaban is eons better (and the poster made it pretty apparent that his objection to Czaban is political and really has nothing to do with his sportstalk hosting abilities.).................

Hey Dave, Larry O'Dipsh't, I mean O'Connor, had on five time failed elected office seeker Dr. Peter Navarro this morning to trash Dr. Fauci because Fauci dismissed the use of hydroxychloroquine in treating covid patients. Dr. Navarro is an economist. Dr. Navarro's past campaign manager said Navarro can't be trusted, and Dr. Navarro said to the San Diego newspaper back in the 90's that he was comfortable lying about his political opponent because everyone lies. Anyway, As we all know, Trump said he took hydroxychloroquine daily, he still got Covid and almost died from it, a fact Larry O'Dipsh't forgot to mention. The crap Larry and The "Doctor" promoted this morning was dangerous. For Larry to give medical credence to this clown is assinine. For Larry to promote inexact or even flawed medical conclusions for political gain is unconscionable. For Heather to even book this snake oil hack is beyond belief. I ask politely WMAL to not put this sham of an news interview online. We don't need the crap he said further promoted. Larry has gone full Whacko Infowars here, and he is trying to destroy the reputation of an fully credentialed medical expert by inferring Trump was smarter than the accredited epidemiologist. Medical Doctors can and do debate on treatments, and diagnoses all the time, and many times they are less than completely right. But for Larry O'Dipsh't to enter this clown into a medical debate for political gain is unequivocally immoral and perilous. Listening to that interview, and hearing Larry act like a "third grade girl with a crush" when hearing this hack say Fauci is a quack, was sickening. Larry crossed the line, I know it and he knows it. And before anyone here attacks me, please Google Peter Navarro, and see how many close associates went on the record saying he can't be trusted.

Former WJFKer Peter Rosenberg who used to broadcast from inside a McDonald's. www.vulture.com... Gus good morning America how are you? Strongly worded memo to Rob no longer even in radio Spewak follows

“I didn’t hear a single mention of Vince Promuto’s death on local sports talk radio. That’s pretty outrageous given that he played for the Redskins for over a decade.” I’m sure Andy Pollin made note of it on his AM 630 show – he’s by far the leading expert on the Washington Football Team and its storied (up until about 30 years ago) history in DC sports media. Unfortunately that station’s signal is problematic where I live so can’t listen very often. In general, local athletes and coaches of the distant past don’t get much play when they pass on unless it’s an iconic figure such as Bobby Mitchell or John Thompson, Jr., the thinking being that the DMV’s such a transient area that only a tiny percentage of the audience has ever heard of someone like Promuto. A year ago, the “bad guys” (Steve Czaban and Chad Dukes) ruled afternoon drive in DC when it came to sports radio – can anyone deny that it’s much more palatable now with Russell & Medhurst on 980 and Grant & Danny on 106.7? I’ve never understood why Czaban (who seems to prefer wallowing in bizarre or salacious news stories or railing against reasonable Covid precautions in sports to talking in depth about the Wizards, Caps and Nats) is considered one of the best in the business.

To those who have issues with WZHF: If your world view is that Russia is our enemy, congratulations, you are Mark Levin. Is that what you want to achieve, is that your goal in life? This again? "...permitted... there are two other rating services for radio in DC beside Nielsen. What are they? No answer." No answer because the question was never asked. Being an enormous wuss is no way to go thru life, son. "Winner" does not equal "monopoly". Who snapped the mousetrap on your ballzack? Like the doctor in Twin Peaks played by the late Mel Ferrer my concerns are global and you want to focus on this punkass trivial stuff. Gus much more concerned about the lack of In 'n' Out Burger

I agree with OBEEE. I didn't hear a single mention of Vince Promuto's death on local sports talk radio. That's pretty outrageous given that he played for the Redskins for over a decade. Yeah, he played here before the glory years, but that really shouldn't matter. Just another sign of the abyss into which local sports talk has fallen.

Dave Hughes, if you continue to permit your Gus to make stupid remarks about serious postings you will lose your readers. Recently, you permitted Gus to say there are two other rating services for radio in DC beside Nielsen. What are they? No answer. Please don't say Eastlan because they only survey small markets. They have never surveyed DC. To my knowledge, Nielsen is the only company that surveys DC radio. Nielsen is a monopoly in DC for radio. Please give it a rest with Gus. I am sorry that DC Broadcasters don't read DCRTV anymore.

"The Russians are paying Arthur Liu $420,000 per year and John Garziglia $300,000 per year to carry this Russian propaganda in DC." Oh boo hoo. How is the Russian situation different from RFE/RL which has Russian government provided office space in Moscow? I read Tass, the Jerusalem Post, French and German newspapers, and I never feel the need to stamp my little feet like you, like a li'l bitch. I have not yet had the pleasure of listening to the Russian station that has you so fired up. Have YOU? My money's on "no". I dipped into it just now and I fail to see the problem (the show playing was Roger Penrose talking about a pop science view of quantum mechanics. Scary, right kids?) but thanks to your prodding I will be listening to it more and more. Thanks for the tip! Gus v'danya, Vod Kanockers

I still dont understand Scott on the 98 Rock "JSS morning show"...? Scott whines-bitches-complains about being so tired and worn out nowadays...WTF? from broadcasting 4 hours a day from home? Scott KEEPS "working"/broadcasting from home (is he too lazy-mental issues keeping Scott at home?) to go work out of studio nowadays and now he bitches about needing a nap everyday. And yet working on a wacky morning show that uses pop culture-entertainment news for content/commentary Scott is SO freakin dumb-lazy-stoopid to watch any current movies, TV shows, news etc to say anything useful.

Do you know what the highest billing station in America is? It is close by us. It is WTOP the all news station in DC! Why is that? Could it be because they have no competition in their format? Others have tried and failed. DC is the News Capital of the world! With two elections coming up, Congress in 2022 and Presidential in 2024, there is going to be a lot more News in DC. We expect WTOP to continue to do well.

Why should NPR receive any of our tax dollars? They have been getting our tax dollars for 50 years! Why not give our tax dollars to the DC stations that are carrying the Russian propaganda from Moscow? You know who they are. WZHF 1390 AM owned by Arthur Liu and Translator 105.5 FM owned by John Garziglia. The Russians are paying Arthur Liu $420,000 per year and John Garziglia $300,000 per year to carry this Russian propaganda in DC. Dave Hughes, please don't permit "Gus" to post some stupid remark about this. I get so angry seeing all these stupid remarks that you permit posted by "Gus". Is this in the Public Interest?

Although the Post ran a very good obituary on his death, I did not hear any radio or TV sports in the area report on Vince Promuto. That was a major oversight in my eyes. He played 11 years for the local football team and is in their Ring of Fame. He went to AU to get a law degree at the urging of Edward Bennet Williams, and worked at the DEA to begin retirement. He later took over his father’s NYC trash business and became a leader in thinking of the environment when dealing with urban garbage. I have always been proud to say I was a captain of the same high school football team as Vince and Baltimore Legend Artie Donovan. OOBBEE

Gotta tell you, we all know Dave Johnson won't talk about something unless it's "Ted" related or having to do with soccer and enough of the personal agenda crap. But, when a Super Bowl Coach passes away, a person who's faced the Redskins countless times like Jim Fassel, and Dave doesn't mention, that's poor journalism right there. Instead, we have to hear about the Tampa Rays and he airs some interview with their broadcasting guy...really? 103.5 has a great weekend guy Chris Cheon and he'd be great doing morning sports..eager and has some personality and actually gives you some perspective, how about trying him for morning sports!

Weekly TMOS update…LOL, sorry. So, Mike and the gang miss Memorial Day Fri and Mon (After Mike tells us on the Thursday before to remember our Vets – Yes he did!). Ok, that is cool…..except the following Friday Mike misses again. During the bonus show recorded the day before he took his third day off of six, Mike discusses “Drive” and why people like doctors are successful. Successful people are like that “Because they work hard”. He says he tells his son about this “drive” thing all the time. Oh yeah, we also find out Carla has a picture of Mike drunk asleep on the bowl and when TMOS is over Mike is going to volunteer in a hospital like his mom. I’ll stop laughing. These are real words from Mike. He couldn’t just golf and have a few drinks every day. I know Dave has limited TMOS family stuff here but please leave it in. Don and Mike were brutal about the air time Cathy Lee’s Cody and Larry’s Chance would get and how they bragged about them. Junior use to be once is a while but now has been on 75% of the shows since 3:00 PM tapings began. We hear his impersonations like his dad. We hear about excelling at school. We hear about golf exploits. Mom even joins in now. Please note Cathy Lee never bragged like Mike has been doing. It’s so bad you would think it is being done as a work or joke. I would love to hear Don Porch sitting while listening to it! Oh yeah, guess who the weekly talking head the day Mike was gone? Bob’s son!!! Wow!!!! You can’t make this up folks. We heard Oscar talk about the first year at WVU for the fourth time. At least with Mike off he would not ask Oscar where he went to school. Is Oscar’s dog doing tricks next week?

RE: MASN...Bob is off to spend time with his family as his wife’s birthday was this weekend. He announced early on that’s he planning to take more time off this season so it sounds like he’s easing towards retirement. His sub is Dan Kolko, the pregame and postgame host and former sideline reporter. He’s better in those roles but MASN is too cheap to hire an experienced fill-in.

"Who regulates the FCC?" Last I checked, apparently no one. You might be well serviced by getting a computer. If you want more "broadcasters" to work for the FCC, this site is not the place to get it done. Why don't you work on that on the "broadcaster" side of things? No one prevents them from applying. Would you prefer Opie or Anthony? The late Larry King or the late Paul Harvey? Fatt Rob in his white suit in the Casbah or MBA Oscartini? Tell us who you want to work for the FCC. I'll wait because I know you haven't thought this through and are just bloviating. While you're at it, define "broadcaster". Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, proven liars? Chris Matthews, a horndog with a glide in his stride and a dip in his hip? Moondoggy? "Doctor" Gary Null, a proven favorite of WPFW because BLM and stuff? Seriously you folks sound like superghey Napsterazis who are wailing "Waaaaah! I want it fow fwee!" I'm slightly more concerned about the $1 billion going to Israel to kill more Palestinians. Perspective much? If your cellphone works and you can watch TV whaddaya care? Gus no static at all

It has been 50 years since NPR started and they are still getting money from our government. These are your Tax Dollars that they are giving away to spread their agenda. It might not be so bad if they were fair and balanced. If you listen to them you know that is not true. I hope things will change in 2022. Remember NPR comes from DC where Black Lives Matter!

So I tune in the Nats game today on TV...Where the heck is Bob Carpenter? Sounds like MASN picked up someone that might have been a high school kid to fill in for Bob. I Have no idea who it is BUT it is somewhat comical to listen to. Where do they get these people from?

I am happy to see that the NAB takes a position on the 2021 Regulatory Fees for radio stations. They have slammed the proposed increase in fees and says there should be NO fees in 2021. Congress has given the FCC a nice budget increase for 2021. Most stations have had a tremendous drop in revenue due to covid and the shut downs during the past 14 months. When will the FCC ever start hiring broadcasters to regulate the Broadcasting Business? The FCC is composed of lawyers to write new "Rules and Regulations" and clerks. Who regulates the FCC?

MAL can add a person of color to its lineup after the urban stations add a white person to theirs. Talk is cheap. Show us the way.

/\ June 6 /\

\/ June 5 \/

Is the new lineup at WMAL just a lineup of White Men? When are they going to break the color barrier? I thought they believed in diversity? DC is the city where they are licensed. DC is a city of color! Black Lives Matter! The Mayor says so.

Tuned in to 106.7 to listen to Czaban this a.m. No Czabe, it was the typical weekend trash. They are basically perpetrating a fraud by advertising Czabe does a Saturday morning show on that station given how much he takes off......

How can the FCC justify raising their annual regularity fees 15% this year when most radio stations have had the worst year in history with the 14 month "lock down" due to covid. This will be the third year in a row the FCC has raised their fees. The bureau does not understand the broadcasting industry! No one at the FCC has ever worked at a radio station. The only thing the FCC enjoys is writing "new rules and regulations". It keeps the lawyers employed. Note to FCC....keep working from home and think of all the money you are saving our government! Congress has given the FCC a nice increase in their budget this year. As Gus would say, what does this mean? The FCC gets a big Budget from Congress and a large amount of money from the stations.

Early this week the Cox company dropped FOLK-TV channel 465 in Fairfax County VA which carried reruns of The Saint, Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Carol Burnett etc. w/o explanation. That channel was much more interesting than some of the current crap on the major channels I have to continue to pay for even though I don’t watch. More bad programming decisions.

Dave's response: Folk TV is available via Roku.....

Hmmmmm. Now the hackers that wrought havoc with food and petro are going after local TV stations. They've already hit two Cox properties. Wonder who is about to get cyber-walloped in DC? www.nbcnews.com... JA

So I see the anchors at News4, like the other stations, are now back to sitting next to each other in the middle of the anchor desk like the old days as of earlier this week. But...Pat Lawson Muse and Shawn Yancey are filling in on Friday’s 5:00 show and they’re at opposite ends of the anchor desk with the split screen. Hmmmmm. And when is Doug Kammerer going to stop working from home? Oh, and maybe I totally missed this, when did WMAL shuffle their lineup? Larry in the mornings, Vince in PM drive and so long to Mary I guess. Back to being a lineup of nothing but white men.

Can someone find Erin Como a man? And SOON!. She is so thirsty on the morning show. Obviously she's no longer seeing the morning producer and even seems to be trying to flirt with Tucker, who isn't having it.

A friend asked me to make a run to the Fairfax Recycling Center to drop off some scrap electronics for him. I was quite appalled at what was being pitched: among the items were two of those digital TV converters we all got with a government-issued coupon some years ago to get us through the HDTV transition, two dedicated ROKU appliances that connect your house LAN to a TV for early cord-cutters, and a 48" flatscreen TV with a lot of life left in it but missing all the "cool stuff" today's viewers demand. I'd consider donating the TV, but without the "cool stuff", who would take it? The ROKU converters are basically little computers, but even ROKU says the boxes can't be hacked or repurposed and should just be discarded. And the HDTV converters are just useless because they need an analog TV to work, and we all got rid of those a decade ago. When I think about the countless dead electronics perhaps going back to the 1960s that are already crushed and lying on the bottom of Garbage Mountain in Lorton, the notion of pitching even more electronics that only had a working life of 2-3 years really chaps my ass. I am not a tree-hugger by any means, I know these items are stripped and recycled as much as possible, and I love my entertainment. But stopping to look at this carload of short-lived devices -- by DESIGN -- on its way down Rt 123 is just appalling.

Per: "I can’t wait to be able to stream a live NFL game on my phone while on my bike via broadcast TV" At least local bikers try to cooperate with auto traffic on our MD 2 lane highway with no shoulders and not-flat land bordering it. I gather the writer wanting the free NFL on his phone will be happy to die when she/he veers in front of a car. Oh well, her/his family will benefit from the driver's insurance. I was reminded of this problem on a dual lane state highway this morning. A car in the left lane was moving almost at the speed limit with cars lined up behind. When I joined others passing her, I noted she had a cell phone flat in one hand and was looking at it. Who was the safer driver ... driving at the speed limit while on a phone or the cars 'speeding; to get around her?

This is interesting...I am in Gaithersburg/Rockville area. I was on my way into Silver Spring to see a client when I ran into major traffic on W. Montgomery Ave going to 270. Turns out there was a major accident on 270. I unfortunately cancelled my appointment, and when I came home I went online to get some more info about the accident that I had just heard on the Sirius XM traffic channel. I went on the sites for 4, 5, and 9, and I could not find any updated traffic info on any site! I finally went to TOP and they actually have a recorded traffic update on the site. That was pretty cool. But I think our news organizations would do well to throw some current traffic info up on their sites.

Re: “Dave: At this point, can people move on”…Move on to where? Podcasts? Even then slim pickings. JFK is a joke after the Junks. First is B Mitch and the white guy. (So, CK can check a box.) It really is Chad and Lavar in a Mr. Rogers world. Then, you have the comedian and the little guy. (Absolutely the funniest thing I ever saw was the little guy sitting next to Lurch at the Tally Ho that “JFK night”. It looked like Lurch was going to engulf him like land shark on SNL or “Feed me Seymour” on Little Shop) I will leave TEM alone for now; like their ratings. TOP traffic has always been a joke. I think they spend more time talking about 50 heading west than anything. Even on regular nights. Is there that many people heading that way vs other ways out? I have always thought increase the traffic and decrease the weather during rush if nothing is happening. Maybe do DC inside out and counter clockwise working out? It is not brain surgery. It’s been a awhile since I did the DC to 757 to beaches. There used to be a comedy station that was a good change of pace along the way. OOBBEE

News revenue is actually growing quite a bit locally, so this notion that broadcast TV is going away is just bunk. Soon you’ll be getting some of your streaming content via NextGen TV too and it’ll be on your phone also while you’re cutting the lawn on the tractor. I have an iPhone mount on my mtn bike. I can’t wait to be able to stream a live NFL game on my phone while on my bike via broadcast TV and keep in mind, that will be FREE, no DATA COST!

Dave's response: Watching broadcast TV on your phone while riding your bike? Good luck with that.....

Dave: At this point, can people move on from idiots like Czaban and the former 980 talent, and that includes Sheehan. They're in the rear view mirror and awful talent! WJFK remains a station with recycled talent and man, has Grant gotten as arrogant as Francessa! Back down here in the outer banks and my trip on Friday was just awful and again, I couldn't find a station that had any decent traffic reports. That woman on 103.5 would never mention how it was going South and just kept rambling about the road work and I wish Dave would take a breath and stop going so fast like we should know what he's talking about. Don't people care about the drivers anymore?

Who cares if cellphones have an FM chip or not. People are increasingly NOT listening to terrestrial radio or watching terrestrial tv anymore. How soon is it until the cost of tower maintenance, electricity, insurance, personnel, etc, becomes too much and it becomes easier just to broadcast to Alexa?

How nice to hear John Patti and Bill Vanko paired up in the morning on Newsradio 1090. Most professional sounding duo on the staff. Now if only they would retire Screamin Scotty. No need for him to be shouting day-old news to us.

TO GUS LEADING THE SLOW… I have an AM radio that is far tinier than my iPhone, so a ferrite antenna can be quite small and work just fine. it picks up AM stations up and down the coast. The main problem with AM reception on a cell phone is the digital interference on AM and the fact that most cell phones violate FCC rules on this as has been proven in many tests. The FCC doesn’t care, no longer polices this anymore. This is why Ajit Pai’s AM Revitalization plan was a joke. It only continued the demise of AM radio through increased acceptance of signal destroying interference via less oversight by the undermanned FCC.

As NPR observes its 50th year of operations, it should be noted that 11 years ago on this day then-NPR president Vivian Schiller was interviewed for the Dow Jones blog AllThingsD. In that interview, she gave two memorable quotes: "First of all, note we don’t call ourselves National Public Radio anymore. We’re NPR."; and, "Radio towers are going away within 10 years, and Internet radio will take its place." Schiller has faded into obscurity. Radio towers continue to exist and the stations that use them continue to serve millions of listeners. What a visionary!

I have a one year old LG K40 cellphone that has FM radio installed and it works just fine. I listen to it while cutting the grass and sometimes when I get bored with my playlist when working out.

Even the simplest WWII prison camp radio has a hyooge coil, which is why no cellphone in the world has an AM radio in it. Come on people! Gus teaching the slow

[RE:iPhones - Why is it so F-ing hard to get WJFK] It's not the device. WJFK has had good and bad stretches on multiple devices for me since Czabe moved in January. Good results the last two Saturdays. WJFK is never the quickest to connect the stream. On the positive side the audio quality is much better than the stream on WTEM during Czabe's final months. On the negative side, it doesn't really matter how good the audio quality is if the stream doesn't start or drops every few minutes. -- Mark in Springfield

Physics is more fun when you KNOW the products you’re talking about. Removing the headphone jack does NOT remove the antenna as some lightning connector antennas & headphones were created. Now eventually, Apple simply removed that connection altogether. As for the FM chips, it’s been widely known and tested that all the Qualcomm modem chips included the FM frequencies. That is technical specs. Some iPhones used Intel modems, so that might be Tim Cook’s only basis for saying FM was physically not present, but those technical specs are not even known fully since Intel never revealed them that I’m aware of. IFIXIT however did an iPhone teardown a few years back and still found FM capability in the chips. None of this refutes the notion that Apple could at any moment with no cost other than loss of streaming profits, enable FM capability as could Samsung and other cell phone manufacturers and cell service providers. In some countries, I believe FM circuitry is required to be enabled for emergencies but this is becoming a moot point as analog is now a dying technology in general. Now Apple purchased Intel’s modem business a few years ago, but they have still not created a single 5G modem chip and they’ll likely spend years trying to remove FM from whatever they do make so that it doesn’t work. From a pure physics level, it would be easier to put an ATSC 3.0 TV chip and antenna inside an iPhone (with DRM/Digital Radio Mondiale), but you can bet that Apple won’t be doing that either, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Indian and South Korean cell phone manufacturers do. Sometimes progress is hampered by profits, especially in America.

As for MASN and Os/Nats broadcasts, I think Kevin Brown is quite capable on play by play, but I agree that he’s no Gary Thorne nor is Scott Garceau, who can sometimes put me to sleep. I don’t dislike Scott Garceau, but he reminds me of the old WMAR 2 days with Brooks Robinson, but that history is just too old to repeat itself, sorry. I didn’t like Scott Garceau on Ravens play by play either. And I’ll agree that Bob Carpenter is always hampered by poor analysts. Both pre/post game shows are lacking in many ways. Also, has anyone noticed that MASN has not really changed the graphics intros since the beginning of MASN, maybe more for the Nats than the Os, but both just look old. The Orioles game intro still shows the Natty Boh sign even though the Orioles removed the beer from the stadium years ago now! The only thing funnier would be if they showed an old Gunther Beer sign at the beginning. I”m starting to agree with Nats fans. MASN really needs to be sold to a professional outfit that does this stuff for a living, not run by the Angelos boys in their spare time from being bad lawyers.

The original Sony Walkman was an FM only radio/cassette player as I recall in the 1980s. I still have one that works. Before that, we took AM radios to the beach when I was a child, but back then, there was actually music on the AM dial to hear at the beach. In Ocean City, the big FM station most listened to by tourists was 100KHI at 99.9 FM. Btw, the new KHI on the shore is planning to move from 94.9 FM to 94.5 FM, although it hasn’t been approved yet.

There was never a law mandating both AM and FM in radios. Lots of proposals, but nothing was ever enacted. Most receivers ended up including both because the marketplace spoke, but there were outliers that were still FM-only at the high end and AM-only at the very low end. And down below from the weekend - no, the frequencies used by wireless carriers don't "wrap around" the FM band. The lowest frequencies used by wireless carriers are in the 600 MHz spectrum, the old TV channel 38 and above. At those frequencies, you're designing an antenna for a wavelength of about 50 cm, and it's still a compromise to squeeze that into the case of a handheld device. At 88 MHz, you're dealing with a wavelength of about 3 meters. The only way the FM chip in phones ever worked was by using the wired headphone cord as the antenna. No headphone jack? No antenna. No antenna? No usable reception at such long wavelengths. Physics is fun when you spend some time actually learning how it works.

Flipping back and forth between O's Xtra and Nats Xtrra, hard to watch either. What a drop off from the great years with Johnny and Ray and Tom and Rick. It's difficult to blame either current host but they just don't have the experience, TV presence or name recognition the other guys had. When it comes to the game itself, Bob Carpenter has been stuck with inadequate analyst for years, still he does his best with what they stick him with. None of the O's play by play guys eve time close to Gary Thorne.

Some in the time early 1970s, when the baby boomer generation was coming of age and starting to have their own radios and make their own choices as to what to listen to, there was actually more demand for lower priced FM radios than ever before. At that point the FCC put in a rule that said that any radio costing more than $50 at that time had to have both AM and FM tuners, and they both had to be fully functional It was after this that the FM-only stereo receivers went away. While apparently all cell phones have at least poor quality FM radios, most DO NOT include AM radios. Even now that AM is slowly fading to static, that law, as far as I know has never been repealed. This may be the reason the cell phone providers won't admit that it's there!
