98 Rock’s Amelia Looks Back As Her 30 Year Radio Career Nears Its End

As 98 Rock’s (WIYY) Amelia prepares to wrap up her 30 year radio career, she is looking back at the radio business she grew up loving and wondering whether the next generation will ever get the same opportunities she did.

In a new interview with Barrett Media, Amelia recalls growing up in Laurel listening to 98 Rock WIYY, DC101 WWDC and WHFS, with personalities including Sarah Fleischer and Robin Quivers inspiring her to pursue radio. After getting her start at college radio in New Mexico and bouncing around stations across the country, she eventually made it back home. She joined 98 Rock part time in the late 1990s and became full time in 2003, working mornings, afternoons and nights before eventually landing the midday shift once occupied by one of her childhood radio heroes, Sarah Fleischer.

Amelia Is leaving radio with concerns about where radio is headed. She questions why the industry didn’t do more with opportunities such as HD Radio and says she worries young people who still love radio may never get the chance to follow the same path she did. After more than two decades at 98 Rock, Amelia’s final broadcast is scheduled for December 18. She plans to trade the studio for the open road, traveling in a camper for the first couple of years of retirement.
