A Signal Boost Is On The Way For Leesburg’s 101.7

This one Is a little confusing, but here we go…..Fredericksburg’s WPER is rebroadcast on Culpeper’s WPIR. WPIR feeds a translator at 101.7 in Leesburg. The translator Is increasing its power to 100 Watts.

The translator will now take its feed from WWWT HD5. A DCRTV reader points out that by shifting to an HD subchannel of the primary station, the translator moves into “fill in” status under FCC rules.

Previously, the translator was considered “non fill in” because it was fed by distant WPIR. That classification capped it at just 13 watts, severely limiting coverage. With the new HD5 feed, the translator gains both power and flexibility, potentially expanding reliable reception while remaining compliant with contour protections. Got it? I think I do…
