Channel 9 Had Technical Trouble During Commanders Game

Channel 9 (WUSA) had closed captioning trouble over the weekend during the Washington Commanders – Miami Dolphins game.

For most of the first quarter, closed captioning was broadcast over the air, and viewers could not turn it off.

DCRTV tracked down the trouble. Here’s what we found out:

The Commanders, not WUSA, produce the game.

The closed captioning is AI generated at the game, and WUSA receives different feeds, with and without captioning, to broadcast.

The Commanders made an error and sent the feed with the captioning twice.

There was nothing Channel 9 could do to fix the problem. They were simply picking up the feed and broadcasting it.

It took the Commanders most of the first quarter to figure out the source of the trouble and get it fixed.
