Geri Mitchell Leaves WAMU

After more than seven years as a steady and familiar presence on WAMU (88.5 FM), midday host Geri Mitchell has signed off for the last time. She joined WAMU in 2017 after a three-decade broadcasting career and a stint teaching in her native St. Louis, where she’s now returning to be closer to family.

Mitchell was also the creative force behind WAMU’s Lift Every Voice series, an annual Black History Month project that highlighted both celebrated and unsung Black artists, athletes, and leaders. She expanded the series to include local students through a partnership with The Creative School, giving young people a chance to record and share the stories of historical figures. “If I can inspire even one person to take the baton, I believe we have hope for our future,” Mitchell said.
