NBC4’s Julie Carey Retires (Video)
One of Washington television’s most respected reporters is calling it a career. NBC4 (WRC) Northern Virginia Bureau Chief Julie Carey announced on Wednesday’s 4, 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts that she is retiring, bringing to a close a remarkable 34 year run at the station.
Carey joined WRC in 1992. Her reporting took viewers from local communities to the halls of power in Richmond, where she covered every Virginia governor, General Assembly session, and statewide election since 1993. Along the way, she became known for her in depth reporting on major issues including child abuse, sex offenders, the integration of women into the Virginia Military Institute, and some of the region’s biggest courtroom stories, including the trials of Lee Boyd Malvo and George Huguely. She also played a key role in NBC4’s coverage of the Kenneth Starr investigation and the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton.
Before arriving in Washington, Carey worked at KSDK St. Louis, WTHR Indianapolis, and KCRG Cedar Rapids. Throughout her career, she earned a reputation as one of the market’s most trusted and knowledgeable journalists, particularly on Virginia politics and Northern Virginia issues. You can see videos of the farewell on the 4, 5, and 6 newscasts below.
