Somebody Climbed WAMU’s Tower – Station Broadcasting From Backup Location
Somebody climbed WAMU’s (88.5) broadcast tower on American University’s campus on Tuesday. Authorities secured the area and deployed negotiators after a person was seen partway up the tower.
WAMU powered down its main transmitter and switched to its backup tower in Virginia.
WTOP (103.5) and WPFW (89.3) also broadcast from this tower.
WTOP is currently broadcasting from a backup location in Maryland.
WPFW does not have a backup tower and is currently off air.
American University told the campus there was no immediate threat to safety. Police said the situation remained ongoing Wednesday.
