WOOK Radio DC Buys WCTN
WCTN (950 AM) and its 94.3 FM translator (W232DE) have been sold. Late Thursday night, WIN Radio Broadcasting Corporation filed an agreement to sell the Potomac station to WOOK Radio DC, Inc. for $800,000. The buyer has placed $150,000 in escrow, with closing subject to FCC approval.
WOOK Radio DC is headed by William Tucker Jr. who owns urban AC The Buzz (KBSZ) along with a FM translator in Arizona. Tucker has been trying to bring WOOK back to DC for years. Tucker launched the modern WOOK Radio DC project in 2013 as a tribute to the station and later attempted to bring WOOK LP to 103.1 FM in Washington. He was awarded, and the FCC later revoked, a LPFM permit ten years ago. You can read more about that here.
The original WOOK was one of the nation’s pioneering stations serving African American listeners and was best remembered on 1340 AM, with the brand later moving to 100.3 FM. WOOK may be one of the most interesting stories in DC radio history. DCRTV did a podcast with Mike Burke about the Rise and Fall of WOOK. You can listen to that here.
