WTOP, NBC4 And FOX 5 Join Washington Sun In Sports Partnership
Three major DC news outlets that normally compete for audience are joining forces with the new Washington Sun on high school sports coverage. WTOP, NBC4 (WRC), and FOX 5 (WTTG) are partnering with the Sun on All DMV, a new initiative spotlighting high school athletes across the Washington area. Julie Ziegler, WTOP’s Director of News and Programming, says the collaboration will allow the outlets to tell athletes’ stories “across brands and on all media platforms.”
Coverage begins with football, soccer, and volleyball at public and private schools in DC, Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, Arlington County, and Fairfax County. The partnership will feature Players of the Week along with stories about teams, coaches, and trends. The content will appear on the Washington Sun, FOX 5, FOX LOCAL, NBC4 television and streaming newscasts, and for radio listeners, WTOP.
The collaboration is designed to help fill the gap created when The Washington Post eliminated its sports department in February, ending more than a century of high school sports coverage. Former Post high school sports editor Michael Errigo will lead All DMV, while former Post reporter Noah Ferguson will lead the reporting. The partnership brings together two competing DC television stations, the market’s major all news radio outlet, and a rapidly expanding new local publication to rebuild a piece of Washington sports coverage that disappeared earlier this year.
