WTOP’s Dimitri Sotis Passes Away

Dimitri Sotis, the beloved evening anchor for WTOP has passed away at the age of 55.

Known for his deep, warm voice, Sotis was a constant presence at WTOP, guiding listeners through breaking news, storms, and elections for more than two decades.

Sotis, who was found unresponsive in his Alexandria, Virginia, home on Saturday night, had anchored WTOP’s evening shift from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. since joining the station in 1999.

WTOP‘s national security correspondent J.J. Green reflected on Sotis’ early career, recalling how they had developed a deep bond after Green helped Sotis land an internship at WMAL in the early 1990s.

After graduating from Ball State University in 1992, he quickly rose through the ranks at UPI before joining WTOP.

He is remembered not just for his unmatched voice but for his generous spirit and his ability to bring people together with his warmth and wit. His passing leaves a profound void at WTOP and in the hearts of those who worked with him.

WTOP honored Sotis with a live ninety minute special Monday night.
