WETA-FM Drops NPR Hourly News
WETA-FM has pulled the plug on NPR’s top-of-the-hour newscasts. As of October 1, the classical outlet stopped airing the hourly NPR updates during morning and evening drive, and the station says there are no plans to bring them back.
In a statement, WETA said the move will “better serve our listeners with local arts and music content” while also cutting costs. The decision comes as the station faces tighter budgets following the loss of federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. WETA says the extra airtime will be filled with short, locally produced music and arts features voiced by its hosts.
