William & Mary’s WCWM Signs Off, License to Be Canceled
After more than six decades on the air, WCWM (90.9 FM) in Williamsburg has canceled its license, bringing an end to one of the region’s longest-running student-run radio stations. The station, owned by The College Of William & Mary, served the area with a 13,500-watt signal.
WCWM launched in 1959, after several years of student-led efforts to get a station approved and built. Originally operating at just 10 watts on 89.1 MHz with a limited evening schedule focused on classical music, the station steadily grew over the decades. Frequency changes, power upgrades, and a shift to a full-time schedule helped transform WCWM into a 24/7 outlet known for its eclectic, freeform programming and commitment to independent and underground music.
Staffed almost entirely by student and faculty volunteers, WCWM became a creative outlet for generations of broadcasters, offering everything from niche music shows to talk programming. The station also expanded beyond the airwaves, hosting events like WCWM Fest featuring notable indie artists.
