WMAR Names New News Director

Rick Gevers reports that Jeff Herman has been promoted to News Director at WMAR 2 News. He starts his new role on September 10. Herman is currently the station’s Assistant News Director and has held several management positions during his 23 years at WMAR.

Herman succeeds Kelly Groft, who has served as News Director since 2009 and has spent more than 27 years at WMAR. In a LinkedIn post, Groft described her departure as a “pause” in her career following the recent deaths of her sister and father, along with other personal and professional losses.

Groft said she needs time “to grieve, to breathe, and figure out what’s next,” but hopes the move is only a reset. “I’m a journalist in my core,” adding that working in a Baltimore newsroom was “this Maryland girl’s dream come true.”
